Rukun Tetangga turns 50, govt rolls out initiatives to booth youth involvement
CHUKAI: The National Unity Ministry is implementing various initiatives to boost youth participation in Rukun Tetangga (RT) activities, said Deputy Minister K. Saraswathy.
She said this includes introducing the Progressive Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) concept, which involves community-based economic projects aimed at increasing household income, particularly among young people.
"This year marks the 50th anniversary of RT.
"What started as a community safety team has now grown to include initiatives such as the Unity Squad and patrol units, among others.
"Therefore, we are encouraging more young people to join RT so they can play an active role within their communities," she told reporters after launching the Terengganu-level Unity Week celebration at Arena Square here today.
Also present was state Welfare, Women's Development, Family and National Unity Committee chairman Maliaman Kassim.
Saraswathy said there are currently 8,565 KRT nationwide, including more than 500 in Terengganu, serving as the backbone of the government's efforts to foster community unity.
She said this reflects the growing spirit of volunteerism and consensus among Malaysians.
"RTs also play an important role in addressing issues or tensions within communities, including incidents that go viral on social media.
"They consistently work together with authorities such as the police to help defuse such situations," she said.

SST, e-invoicing, rental hikes: How much more can man-on-the street Malaysians ‘tahan'?
THEY told us it wouldn't burden the rakyat. They said the rakyat-friendly Sales and Services Tax (SST) is better than the Goods and Services Tax (GST). We were assured that it wouldn't be burdensome (that only the wealthy will have to bear with additional taxes). But week after week, we are watching U-turn after U-turn. One day, apples and oranges are taxed. The next day, they are off the list (due to excessive opposition from the rakyat). The day after that, beauty salons found themselves in the list. On June 27, they clarified that beauty services are exempted as the Madani government fine-tuned its SST roll-out (this means manicures, pedicures, facials and haircuts will remain exempt under the revised tax regime). But there is always tomorrow when they say 'oh sorry, misinterpreted'. What is going on? The SST is going up from o% to 8% while it now covers a wider scope. Imported fruits, hair salons (exempted for now as they fall under beauty services), gym memberships – even daycare and pre-school services get included. Yes, businesses pay the taxes upfront but they are not going to absorb the cost. They will eventually pass it on to us, the rakyat. Every cup of coffee, every meal, every facial (exempted for now), every trip to the grocer will from tomorrow (July 21) incur additional cost. So tell us, how is this any different from GST? Policy flip-flop Now we have e-invoicing apparently to promote transparency (already took off in phases starting with companies exceeding RM100 mil in annual revenue since Aug 1, 2024). But let's be honest. This is not just about the big players. This is about monitoring our every transaction. Where we makan. where we shop or how much we spend. Soon, even nasi lemak bungkus may need a receipt! They claimed that it's all about plugging leakages. But until when should man-on-the street Malaysians have to bear with the cost of 'reforms' that only further pressure them? Shop owners are already struggling. With the SST increase, landlords are hiking up rental, some up to 8%. If shop rental in the past was RM50,000/month, the rate now could be RM54,000/month or more. Notwithstanding, this, traders will be forced to once again raise the prices of goods that we are paying. From your morning coffee to your baju to your skincare, everything now carries the weight of bad policymaking. PMX contradicting himself? Anwar used to say GST was unfair because it taxed everyone. His election pledge has been never to burden the rakyat. But there is hardly any difference between GST and SST now. SST is ultimately our responsibility. E-invoices control our spending. Expect prices of goods to ballon, the same applies to rental and services rendered. What has happened to the promise of reform? Instead of taxing the super-rich, chasing after billions lost in corruption or reducing government waste, this government chooses the easiest target – ordinary Malaysians. So we ask until when will you squeeze the people or treat them as your cash cows? We're not against tax reforms. But don't lie to us. Don't say 'we're protecting the rakyat' when every policy says otherwise. Don't say 'this won't burden you' when the receipt shows otherwise. Don't treat the rakyat as fools. We are watching. We are calculating. We are angry. PM Anwar uses chartered flight for three-nation visit to save time and costs
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will begin a three-nation official visit tomorrow, travelling via a chartered Malaysia Airlines flight to Rome, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro until July 7. The decision aims to optimise time, reduce costs, and streamline delegation coordination. Tunku Nashrul Tunku Abaidah, the Prime Minister's senior press secretary, explained that the chartered flight was chosen to avoid lengthy transits and ensure smooth scheduling. 'This allows the Prime Minister's packed itinerary to proceed efficiently without delays,' he said during the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) briefing. The government will cover expenses for official delegates, while business representatives will pay their own costs. 'Business delegates were invited to join the mission to lower overall expenses and improve coordination,' Tunku Nashrul clarified, dismissing any conflict of interest concerns. Corporate participants include Petronas, Khazanah, TNB, Maybank, FGV, YTL Power, and Sunway. The visit seeks to strengthen trade, open new markets, and create high-skilled jobs for Malaysians. Anwar's attendance at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro will also highlight ASEAN's role in global governance and support the Global South agenda.

Mining bribery case: Why reel in the small fry and not bigger fish, asks whistleblower

KOTA KINABALU: Whistleblower Datuk Tei Jiann Cheing, now the accused in a high-profile corruption case, wants to know why only the small fry are being prosecuted when bigger fish are still swimming free. The 37-year-old businessman is urging the authorities to act on evidence he claims to have submitted to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) implicating high-ranking political figures in the Sabah mineral prospecting licensing probe. ALSO READ: Two Sabah assemblymen, businessman claim trial over RM350,000 mining bribe case 'I have been charged today (Monday, Jan 30), but what about the rest? Why only charge the 'ikan bilis' (anchovies) while the sharks are still out there?' he told the media after his court appearance. 'I handed over evidence to the MACC. Why were only two people picked? Is it because our 'connections' are not strong enough?' Tei also raised concerns about what he described as an unusual delay in his case. He said he would not be intimidated and vowed to continue speaking out, even if others were hoping to silence him. He also accused the authorities of sending a 'poisonous signal' to Malaysians by charging the whistleblower in a corruption case instead of protecting him. Tei's lawyer Edward Paul described the case as 'unusual', as the whistleblower was also charged alongside the alleged recipients of bribes. ALSO READ: Mining bribery case: Sabah reps vow to continue serving constituents while clearing their names Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for offering bribes, and if convicted, faces up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe. Special Corruption Court Judge Jason Juga has fixed Aug 5 for pre-trial case management and granted Tei RM60,000 bail with RM15,000 deposited under one local surety. Tei is reported to be the businessman behind the so-called "whistleblower videos" exposing politicians allegedly involved in corrupt activities between 2023 and last year, in exchange for assistance in processing mineral exploration licence applications.
