
IIM Sambalpur launches UG programmes in Public Policy and Artificial Intelligence
The Bachelor of Science in Management and Public Policy programme is designed to meet national managerial aspirations in terms of Sustainability, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), and community-led development. The programme aims to equip change-makers with the ability needed to close the gap between policy and practice at the grassroots level. Admissions will be based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores.
The Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is focused towards developing the country's digital capability and global competitiveness. Reaffirming the institution's pledge to innovation with integrity, the programme, co-designed with industry leaders, builds future ready skill sets and encourages the use of ethical AI. The premier management institution will offer admissions to this programme through IIT JEE Main.
'The cross-functional courses are designed to develop responsible leaders who can address intricate societal and industrial challenges with innovation, compassion, and a global perspective,' it said.
The admissions for this B.S. programmes will begin in June, 2025, and classes for the first batch will commence from September.
Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, the director of IIM Sambalpur, said, 'It is a great pride that we have successfully launched Bachelor of Science (B.S) four-year fully residential programme. This is a pioneering step towards building future-ready leaders of tomorrow. In line with India's National Education Policy, (NEP 2020) our vision is to create responsible leaders with entrepreneurial mindset.'
'These undergraduate programmes have a flexible structure that allows students to gain a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a degree after three years, and an honors degree after successfully completing four years, with multiple entry and exit points,' he added.
The event also featured a roundtable discussion themed, 'Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as Engines of Innovation for Global Enterprises'.
Bramhanand Jha, PMP and vice president at National eGovernance Division under MeitY, Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India was the chief guest of the event. He said, 'India's Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are no longer low-cost arbitrage centres; they are becoming strategic innovation hubs for value for global business. With the economy shifting towards a digital-first economy, GCCs are leading the way in developing agile, technology-enabled, and future-proof organizations.'
Lt. Col. Piyush Shukla, the director of JEE, National Testing Agency (NTA), and Rajesh Kumar, the director of CUET – both from the National Testing Agency (NTA) – were keynote speakers at the event. They discussed the evolving role of GCCs as crucial hubs driving innovation and global digital transformation and shared insights on the future of global enterprises and the strategic role of GCCs.
'India's education evaluation system is changing to discover and develop talent that can succeed in fast-paced, innovation-driven setups like Global Capability Centres. It is encouraging to witness institutions like IIM Sambalpur launch innovative undergraduate programmes that blend analytical rigour with policy and technology expertise,' Shukla said
'Our vision at NTA is to develop a strong and inclusive testing system in tune with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and ready students for global leadership and innovation,' he added.
'With the launch of CUET, we have made a big leap towards democratizing access to quality higher education in India….Global Capability Centres are shaping the future of work, and through an equitable, transparent, and standardized testing environment, NTA is dedicated to helping drive this transformation by empowering the next generation of globally capable professionals,' Kumar said.
The event was followed by panel discussions with senior academicians and industry leaders on the topics 'Transforming Operations through GCCs: The Digital Shift from Cost Efficiency to Strategic Value' and 'Aligning Talent Upskilling with Policy Innovation for Sustainable GCC Growth'.

CBSE schools offering AI rises to over 4,500 in Class 9: Education ministry data
New Delhi: The number of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-affiliated schools offering artificial intelligence (AI) as a subject to students in Classes 9 and 11 has seen a sharp rise, with Class 9 registrations surging by 1,833% — from 235 schools in 2019–20 to 4,543 in 2024–25 — and Class 11 by 1,080%, from 80 in 2020–21 to 944 in 2024–25, according to data shared by the union ministry of education in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The national board introduced AI as an optional elective skill subject in Class 9 from the academic session 2019–2020 and in Class 11 from 2020–21. (Representative image) Responding to questions raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Sujeet Kumar, union minister of state (MoS) in the ministry of education Jayant Chaudhary said that the board had signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Intel (Integrated Electronics) and IBM (International Business Machines) to promote an emerging technology-based curriculum in schools. 'The curriculum and the content for the AI course was prepared by the board with support of experts from Intel, IBM and other higher educational institutions,' Chaudhary said. The national board introduced AI as an optional elective skill subject in Class 9 from the academic session 2019–2020 and in Class 11 from 2020–21. The data shows that the number of students opting for the subject has seen a continuous rise. While Class 9 students opting for AI jumped by 2,900%, from 15,645 in 2019–20 to 4,69,454 in 2024–25, Class 11 student enrolment increased by 1,556%, from 2,048 in 2020–21 to 33,933 in 2024–25. School principals and technology experts said that the inclusion of AI in the school curriculum has become essential, and demand is growing due to its relevance in the present times and a changing mindset towards AI. 'With AI set to change how students will learn and teachers will teach in the future, we have trained our teachers in smart tutoring platforms to ensure our students are future-ready for digital classrooms. We believe that each student is different and hence our teachers are being trained to create customised study plans for weaker students and thus bring them at par with the others — by taking AI's help in tracking their performance,' Swati Yadav, principal of Bliss International Public School in Meerut, said. Principal of Modern Public School in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh, Alka Kapur, said, 'Their (students') interests are less about gadgets and more about exploring how technology works, affects life, and can be used responsibly to effect positive change. This reflects a change in mindset guided by curiosity with purpose.' Raising concerns about students becoming dependent on AI, principal of Shiv Nadar School in Gurugram, Sameer Arora, said, 'By using analogies, stories, and discussion, not just software, we help students understand not just how AI works, but what it means. Aligned with National Education Policy (NEP)'s vision for future-ready learning, our goal must be to teach students about AI, not lead them into dependence on it. However, before integrating AI in the school curriculum, schools must ask: Is it enriching student thinking? Does it free teachers for deeper engagement? Is it building capability or replacing it?' Co-founder of curriculum design organisation Nature Nurture Akshal Agrawal said, 'Over the past year or two, there has been a visible rise in students opting for AI electives. This is not just because of the buzz, it is because the subject feels real and relevant. Many students are genuinely curious to learn how the tech they use every day actually works. At the same time, there is growing awareness among parents and educators about the need to equip children with skills that go beyond academics.' The growing demand for AI elective subjects also reflects a change in mindset among educators and parents, said Anurag Gupta, CEO and co-founder of AI coding and robotics lab setup company STEMROBO Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 'They see the value in preparing children not just to use technology but to innovate with it. This momentum will only grow as schools continue to invest in 21st-century learning environments,' Gupta added. Minister Chaudhary said that from 2020 to 2024, CBSE has organised seven events, including two national skill expos, three ideathons, and two Future Tech Olympiads. 'A total of 35,000 students, including children who were part of the AI curriculum, have participated in CBSE events,' he said.

Social Science Textbook Offers Inclusive, Diverse Perspectives The revised Social Science textbook, Exploring Society: India and Beyond - Part 1, presents a more inclusive view of Indian history. It includes extensive coverage of regional powers, including: A 22-page section on Maratha history, from Shivaji to the rise of the confederacy Detailed accounts of Sikh governance under Guru Gobind Singh and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Narratives of regional leaders like Rani Abbakka and Narasimhadeva I, with a focus on cultural contributions The textbook also critically examines the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods. Unlike earlier editions, it offers more nuanced portrayals of emperors: Babur is described as a "brutal and ruthless conqueror," Akbar's reign is characterised by both "tolerance and brutality," and Aurangzeb's rule is noted for the destruction of temples and gurdwaras. The aim is to help students understand the complexities of medieval Indian history through a candid and balanced lens. English, Hindi, Art Textbooks Embrace Diversity, Inclusion The new English textbooks, Santoor for Class 5 and Poorvi for Class 8, feature real-life achievers, women leaders, and cultural narratives. The Class 8 Art textbook Kriti and the Class 5 Hindi textbook Veena have been designed to promote creative expression and integrated language learning. These textbooks aim to nurture critical thinking, cultural awareness, and a deeper sense of identity.
