America's Largest Crater Has Surprise Link to Grand Canyon, Study Finds
This surprising connection between Arizona's world-renowned geological features stretches back 56,000 years, to when a 300,000 ton nickel-iron asteroid slammed into the Colorado Plateau with the force of over 150 atomic bombs, creating the largest meteor crater in the United States.
The resultant impact-generated earthquake may have caused a rockslide in the Grand Canyon, damming the Colorado River and temporarily creating a body of water 80 kilometers (50 miles) long and more than 100 meters (around 370 feet) deep in what is today Nankoweap canyon.

Meteor Crater (also known as Barringer Meteor Crater) is a relatively young and exceptionally well-preserved crater just west of the city of Winslow, Arizona. The asteroid that produced it may have been only 30 to 50 meters across, but the impact excavated 175 million metric tons of limestone and sandstone, forming a crater 1.2 kilometers across and about 180 meters deep. Today, such an impact would wipe out an urban center the size of Kansas City.
The newly released study encompasses more than five decades of research, an international team of collaborators, and an evolution of scientific dating techniques.
The evidence for the Nankoweap paleolake hinges on driftwood and lake sediments found in Stanton's Cave, which is situated almost 45 meters above the Colorado River. Carrying the driftwood up to the cave "required a 10 times bigger flood level than any flood that has happened in the past several thousand years," says Karl Karlstrom, a geologist at the University of New Mexico and co-lead author of the study.
The Stanton Cave driftwood was initially collected in 1970 and radiocarbon dated in the 1980s, suggesting it was around 44,000 years old – a figure that was at the limit of radiocarbon testing at that time. Additional driftwood samples were later collected from another high alcove, situated 33 meters above the Colorado River and a few kilometers downstream of Stanton's Cave.
The two separate driftwood samples were independently dated, using different techniques, at different labs. The researchers also analyzed the lake sediments using luminescence dating, which measures the energy of light emitted by a certain material.
This separate dating method, distinct from radiocarbon dating, provided "statistically indistinguishable" dates for the driftwood samples and sediments, converging to 55,600 years ago.
Additionally, researchers found ancient evidence of a natural dam about 35 kilometers downstream of Stanton's Cave. In places, this ancient dam material is overlain with rounded river cobbles that were deposited as the Colorado River overtopped the dam across a span of about 1,000 years.
Overall, the coinciding dates of the impact, landslide, driftwood, and lake sediments support the idea that the Nankoweap paleolake was formed by a seismic event generated by an asteroid traveling with a cosmic velocity of over 11 kilometers per second, producing a 10-15 megaton event upon impact.
The resulting 5.4 magnitude earthquake traveled the 100 miles to the Grand Canyon in seconds, where it hit with an effective magnitude of 3.5 and caused a landslide that dammed the Colorado River and formed the Nankoweap paleolake.
The researchers do acknowledge the possibilities that the Nankoweap paleolake was the result of a natural landslide, or an unrelated earthquake.
"Nevertheless, the meteorite impact, the massive landslide, the lake deposits, and the driftwood high above river level are all rare and unusual occurrences" whose ages converge on a narrow slice of time around 55,600 years ago, concludes Karlstrom.
This research is published in the journal Geology.

A Six-Planet Parade Is Coming — When To See It

The whole world may not go dark on Aug. 2 as the viral posts on social media would have it, but with the Perseid meteor shower and the full sturgeon moon, it's set to be a great month to be outside at night. However, the highlight will likely be a 'planet parade' (also called a 'planetary alignment') — six planets in the night sky at the same time, but only for those who get their timing spot on. Although the timings are not precise — with your location making a big difference to whether you'll see tiny Mercury or not — the highlights will be bright Venus, Jupiter and a brightening Saturn. Here's everything you need to know about the "planet parade" in August 2025. This planet parade — following on from one in the evening sky in February — will take place in the morning sky. That means you'll need to get up early to see it. The dates will vary depending on where you live, but this planet parade will take place between Aug. 10-20 in the eastern sky about an hour before sunrise. Venus and Jupiter will shine very close to each other above due east, with Mercury becoming visible beneath them closer to sunrise. Observing Tips You don't need anything but your naked eyes to see this 'planet parade.' A large telescope is required to see Uranus and Neptune. However, since Mercury will be rising in the east, it will likely be harder to see in the haze of the horizon, so a pair of binoculars may make it easier (it will appear as a reddish dot). However, do be sure to stop using binoculars before sunrise because pointing them at the sun is very dangerous. The highlight is the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 12-13, though its rates of meteors will dip significantly this year because of a bright moon. The best time in August to go stargazing will be between Aug. 16-26, when bright moonlight won't be a factor. That's the best time to see August's true sky highlight — the Milky Way. You'll need to be in a dark sky destination — by using a light pollution map or staying overnight in an International Dark Sky Place . Look southeast as soon as it gets dark; the Milky Way streams through the Summer Triangle stars down to the galactic core near the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius in the south. Twin brothers and former NASA astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly have each flown four missions and were part of NASA's twin study to research the impact of spaceflight on the human body. Hours before Thursday's SpaceX launch, they spoke to "CBS Mornings" about NASA cuts, the challenges of being at the International Space Station and the spaceflight. NASA is set to lose 20% of its workforce as part of the president's efforts to cut spending. Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democratic lawmaker from Arizona, said he's been working with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy about the path forward for NASA. Duffy is also serving as the temporary NASA administrator after the White House pulled the nomination earlier this month for billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who was backed by Elon Musk. "We always want to retain the best people. That's critical to any program across government, but also in the private sector," the senator said. "Often projects and programs and agencies have to undergo some change. I think this is a time with some change right now, but NASA is a resilient and innovative agency." Next year, the Artemis II mission is scheduled to take astronauts around the moon. NASA is launching a fresh crew to the International Space Station around 12:09 p.m. ET Thursday aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. That time is roughly the moment Earth's rotation carries the Falcon 9 rocket into alignment with the space station's orbit. The crew includes three fliers who were assigned to the flight after NASA ran into issues with Boeing's troubled Starliner capsule last year. Aboard Thursday's SpaceX flight is Col. Michael Fincke, a former crewmate of Mark Kelly. "Mike and my brother and I, we were all classmates. Got to NASA in 1996," Mark Kelly said. Fincke and Mark Kelly were both on the space shuttle Endeavour's final mission. "Now this is the next time he's going back into space 14 years later. So I just had to be here, to be here for him and his family and watch him launch up to the space station just one more time," Mark Kelly said. He admitted laughingly that he is a little jealous, saying, "you go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour in about 8 minutes and then dock with this incredible space station on orbit. It is an experience like none other." There is currently no date scheduled for the SpaceX Dragon Crew to return. Scott Kelly said the most challenging part of being at the ISS is being separated "from everything that Earth has to offer." "Earth's an amazing planet and you are separated from the … weather, you are separated from your family. You are separated from all these things that you hold dear," he said.

Object Spotted From Outside Solar System The Same Day As In The Documentary Film 'Independence Day'
As was forewarned in the entirely scientifically accurate 1996 documentary "Independence Day," this July 2 astronomers have detected an unknown object headed for Earth(ish) from beyond our solar system. Exactly like in the film on the same date, an interstellar visitor is heading towards us at tremendous speed and with no tail apparently visible, like on an ordinary comet. In a press conference, President Thomas Whitmore has declared, "The question of whether or not we're alone in the universe has been answered." He has urged us all to remain calm. Wait, sorry, our actual President hasn't said anything about this yet. Officially, this real-life object has been named A11pl3Z, per New Scientist, which I can only assume will also be the name of Elon Musk's next child. It was first spotted by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) that NASA built to look for any asteroids that might, you know, impact terrestrially. While there's no risk of that happening in this case, our interstellar friend (it is friendly, right?) is projected to pass between the Earth and Mars. What is it? According to EarthSky, it is likely a 12-mile wide asteroid or comet from way, way out of town that just happens to be passing through our neighborhood. But according to the 1996 documentary, it's — hang on, let me skip ahead here — oh no. Oh NO. In fact, scientists only first detected an extrasolar object in 2017. Per EarthSky, this object, called 'Oumuamua, was... well, nobody knows what it was, actually. That is comforting and I will sleep well tonight. The second object, named Borisov, was spotted in 2019 and was a comet. Sure. Definitely a comet. This third object should get closest to Earth in October and is projected to be the fastest of the three so far at around 90 km/s. Objects hurtling through space are hard to detect, so the thinking is that interstellar visits like this happen with some regularity, and we're only just now getting better at noticing them. That, or something started intentionally sending stuff our way a few years ago, and it's ramping up now. Maybe because we're getting so easy for aliens to find. Nah, it's probably the former. We're fine. So if you happen to live in a high-population city anywhere on Earth, you should just stay put and not pay any attention to this at all. After all, Independence Day is coming up!
