Man Utd cannot be serious if they think Ollie Watkins is worth £30m less than Bryan Mbeumo
Rewind four years, when Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wanted to sign Kane in the same summer the club paid a then British record £100m to take Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.
City never got close to matching Tottenham's valuation of Kane, with some of those in the know at the time claiming that the club's bid did not get much higher than a guaranteed £60m with an assortment of different bonuses.
City may well dispute that and will no doubt have their own version of events. But what former insiders recall without any doubt is a story of how Fabio Paratici, then managing director of football at Spurs, delivered the brutal truth to Kane and his advisors.
In Paratici's mind it was obvious. Guardiola wanted Kane, but City did not. Not really, anyway. They may have been prepared to go through the motions, but there was no conviction to their pursuit of the striker.
It is said that Paratici delivered a masterclass in honesty to Kane, who eventually stayed at Tottenham and watched City sign Erling Haaland the following summer.
Like Paratici, Villa's vastly experienced president of football operations Monchi has seen it all before and must surely have a similar view of Manchester United's supposed interest in Watkins.
Just a few days after Telegraph Sport revealed that Villa had told United that Watkins is not for sale, reports emerged from the Old Trafford club's tour of the United States that the striker remains one of two top targets along with Benjamin Sesko.
United have not made a bid for Watkins, but it is said they are unwilling to offer more than £45m should they decide to do so. That should tell the 29-year-old everything he needs to know – that United do not really want him. Just as Arsenal did not, when they approached Villa with a similar fee in mind in January.
Going through the motions
Maybe United manager Ruben Amorim highly rates Watkins, but the club clearly do not. It will, of course, be argued that his age limits his value. But the fact is that United believe the England international is worth around £30m less than Bryan Mbeumo and £20m less than Matheus Cunha.
City cannot have been serious if they believed Grealish was worth more than Kane four years ago and United cannot be serious if they think Watkins is worth so much less than Mbeumo and Cunha. It smacks of going through the motions.
That should sound alarm bells ringing in the head of Watkins if it has been turned in the direction of Old Trafford at all. Just as in the case of City and Kane, there is no conviction to United's supposed interest. It must be assumed that the club are either trying to please Amorim or simply view Watkins as being better than nothing.
There has been talk that Villa would have sold Watkins for £60m in January and might still do this summer if their resolve is truly tested. But the Midlands club surely will not find it hard to find a two-word answer – starting and ending in 'f' – if United really do come calling with a bid of around £45m.
Arsenal never returned for Watkins and instead signed Viktor Gyokeres, who is only two years younger, in a deal worth £64m. If United do not sign him this summer, then it is fair to assume they will not return for Watkins either. By next year, the club will have moved on – perhaps even to Kane, who sources believe could be available in the summer of 2026.
Just as Kane deserved a club that truly wanted and valued him, so does Watkins. United may say differently, but they have already proved they do not.

Dundee United won a European tie for the first time in 28 years as Iurie Iovu's second-half strike secured a 2-0 aggregate win over minnows UNA Strassen in their Conference League clash in Luxembourg. Jim Goodwin's new-look side carried a 1-0 win from the first leg of their second qualifier at Tannadice last week, courtesy a first goal for Australian striker Zac Sapsford but the visitors were unconvincing in the first half where both sides missed chances. Much was made of the fact that the United side last week did not contain a Scottish player at kick-off. For the return game Goodwin drafted in Scot Craig Sibbald and Panutche Camara for Isaac Pappoe and Ryan Strain. Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin. (Photo by Ross Parker / SNS Group) | SNS Group The unchanged home side had their fair share of opportunities in the first half, starting in the ninth minute when Dundee United goalkeeper Yevhenii Kucherenko had to save a powerful drive from Eric Brandenburger before Daryl Myre thrashed the rebound over the bar. United responded with a series of sprightly attacks and in the 16th minute Sapsford mishit a cross from Bert Esselink just eight yards out and the ball flew over. In the 36th minute the visitors carved out a good chance when Sibbald played in Ivan Dolcek but his powerful drive was parried by home keeper Koray Ozcan. However, again the home side came back and in a swift counter-attack, Matheus De Souza raced clear down the right but screwed his shot across the face of Kucherenko's goal and past the far post. Both sides went at each other after the break but it was low quality fare. The spirited home side kept going and in the 73rd minute Kucherenko made a decent save from substitute Nicolas Perez's drive and the Taysiders had to work until the final whistle to keep the clean sheet and secure European progression for the first time in seven attempts since overcoming Principat of Andorra in 1997.

UNA Strassen 0 Dundee United 1 (0-2 agg): Iurie Iovu's thumping effort keeps European dream alive for Jim Goodwin's men

If, as expected. Rapid get through, United will head to the Austrian capital next week for a rematch with a Conference League play-off clash at stake. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Dundee United players celebrate winner in Luxembourg Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 2 Iovu powered home a header at the back post Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Iurie Iovu's 64th minute header settled the nerves of the 1,000 Arabs fans in the stands in Luxembourg last night. Until then Jim Goodwin's newlook side - 1-0 winners in the first leg - never looked completely assured of a passage into the third qualifying round. Rangers and Aberdeen had suffered shocks in the country before but United escaped unscathed. Incredibly it was their first Euro victory since the 17-0 aggregate win over Andorran minnows Principat back in 1997. It often wasn't a thing of beauty as they were pushed all the way by a Strassen side that finished second in their league last term but still have never scored in Europe. While stopper Iovu grabbed the headlines, this victory was about Craig Sibbald's display. He'd sat things out last week as Goodwin named United's first ever starting line-up without a Scot. But he showed just how important he will be this season with a dominant display. The ex-Falkirk midfielder battled away tirelessly and was often the man breaking up Strassen attacks and teeing up dangerous moments for United. One thing is for sure though - United will have to raise their game at the Allianz Stadion for the first leg. Jim Goodwin on THAT Darvel defeat, Aberdeen axe and rebuilding his career at Dundee United On Thursday, they often looked like what they are - a side still getting to know one another after 11 new arrivals in the summer. The clash was played 30 miles from Strassen's home ground at the 3,500-capacity Stade Municipal de la Ville in Differdange. United sold out their allocation and their fans made it feel more like a home game. Iovu might have opened the scoring earlier than he did after being picked out by Kristijan Trapanovski's corner just three minutes in. The unmarked Moldovan should have done better than head over from inside the box. It soon became apparent United wouldn't have it their own way as much like the first leg Strassen looked dangerous on the attack against United's high line. After Trapanovski was booked in the fifth minute Zachary Hadji drilled straight at Yevhenii Kucherenko when the free-kick was tapped to him. Moments later Ukraine goalie Kucherenko raced off his line to reach the ball on the edge of the area before Matheus De Souza then Daryl Myre drilled over. Sibbald started a brilliant sweeping move that should have ended with a goal when Vicko Sevelj picked out Zac Sapsford but the Aussie - who scored the first leg winner - got his timing horribly wrong and couldn't finish. Icelandic ref Vilhjalmur Thorarinsson was quick to flash Sibbald a yellow for booting the ball away but it didn't dim Sibbald's will to win. More quick-thinking saw him tee up Ivan Dolcek, whose shot was well saved by Koray Ozcan. There was a blow for United before the break when Trapanovski chased a ball towards the corner then pulled up and immediately signalled his hamstring had gone again. After two similar injuries last season the Macedonian had talked before the game about how he'd done all he could during the summer to ensure he'd return as fit as possible. He was replaced by Max Watters, who had been named on the bench after overcoming the knee injury he'd picked up in the first leg. Goodwin swapped Dolcek for Isaac Pappoe but the second half started much the same as the first, with Strassen's Ricardo Delgado firing wide. Neither side was managing to string many passes together and at times it was poor stuff. But after Pappoe fired straight at Ozcan the on-loan Ferencvaros midfielder played a part in the goal. He won a free-kick which saw Sapsford float a ball to the back post and Iovu did what he couldn't in the first half and nodded home.
