UFC champ Zhang Weili recalls fighting in China; Virna Jandiroba issues challege
UFC champion Zhang Weili's fond memories of fighting in China prompted a bold challenge from the top strawweight contender.
Weili (26-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) currently has three title defenses in her second reign as 115-pound champion. While she has created more than her fair share of championship moments, her most special may be the night she first became champion in 2019.
At UFC on ESPN+ 15, Weili stopped Jessica Andrade in the first round to win the strawweight title. Winning the title by TKO in the opening round to become the first Chinese champion in UFC history was incredible enough on its own, but what put it over the top for Weili was being able to do it on her home country's soil in Shenzhen, China.
"Competing on home soil feels completely different," Weili told AFP in a recent interview. "When you step into the arena with a roaring home crowd behind you, it gives you an incredible boost of energy. So when I won the championship in Shenzhen, the atmosphere was absolutely electrifying."
UFC returns to China later this year. On Aug. 28, the promotion will bring a Fight Night event to Shanghai. Typically, Fight Night events do not see title fights on the card, but that has not stopped Virna Jandiroba from issuing a challenge to Weili.
"Zhang Weili, I've heard that you want to defend your belt in China," Jandiroba wrote on X. "Let's do this!! I've always wished to visit China."
Jandiroba (22-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is the current promotionally ranked No. 1 contender in the strawweight division. She is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, which includes back-to-back wins over former title challengers Amanda Lemos and Yan Xiaonan.
Weili was last in action at UFC 312, where she won a unanimous decision over Tatiana Suarez to secure the third defense of her second title reign. Her next fight could be against Jandiroba, or a superfight against flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
No fights have been officially confirmed for the UFC Shanghai event in August.

The relentless battle also earned Magomedov and his opponent the UFC's $50,000 Fight of the Night Bonus. UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. de Ridder was contested in front of a high-energy crowd inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Featuring five fights on the Main Card, the event was broadcast live on ABC television. Monster Energy's Magomedov (16-1) came to Abu Dhabi looking to return to the winner's column after suffering his first loss in the UFC to Michael Page at the UFC Fight Night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February 2025. Magomedov's opponent, 35-year-old Barriault (17-10) from Quebec, Canada, wanted to build on his recent win against Bruno Silva at UFC 315 in May 2025. UFC 320 adds Farid Basharat vs. Chris Gutierrez to Las Vegas event
UFC 320 gains a fun matchup at bantamweight. Farid Basharat is set to take on Chris Gutierrez at the event taking place Oct. 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event features two title fights, headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira. Merab Dvalishvili faces Cory Sandhagen in the co-feature for the bantamweight title. MMA Junkie confirmed the booking between Basharat (13-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Gutierrez (22-5-2 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) with two sources. Both fighters competed in 145-pound bouts in their last outing, but will return to 135 pounds. The promotion has not yet officially announced the matchup. Basharat, a Dana White's Contender Series veteran, is undefeated in his professional career. He has turned heads through his first four UFC fights, picking up decision wins over Da'Mon Blackshear, Taylor Lapilus, and Victor Hugo, along with a first-round submission of Kleydson Rodrigues. This will be his first fight of the year. Gutierrez dropped his UFC debut, but then when on a hot streak, putting together an eight-fight unbeaten run. Nick Saban shares humorous response to coaching return rumor
For the first time since the rumor was shared during SEC media days, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has publicly commented on his potential interest in returning to coaching. In a recent television appearance on Fox News' Fox and Friends, Saban was asked in an interview the question as to if he would ever return to the sidelines again. Saban, in response, appeared to shut down speculation on a potential return, while also giving a humorous answer. "I never really ever had a thought about getting back into coaching, until two days ago Mrs. Terry said I had to run the sweeper in the entire downstairs," Saban said. "While running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me," When you were coaching, you had a heck of a lot better job than this. That is only time I considered it." "There is no opportunity that I know of right now, that would enhance me to go back to coaching." Saban also later added. Saban, who announced his retirement back in Jan. 2024, was the head coach at Alabama for 17 seasons from 2007-23, winning six national championships during that span. As the head coach at Alabama, Saban also compiled a 206-29 overall record, recorded 16 10-win seasons, and won nine SEC championships. Since announcing his retirement, Saban has remained around college football, most notably through his role on ESPN's weekly show "College GameDay." As to if Saban would ever return, the answer certainly appears unlikely in the near future.
