Rashtrapati Niketan opens to public, draws 113 visitors on day one

Time of Indiaa day ago
Dehradun: The Rashtrapati Niketan in Dehradun, inaugurated by President
Droupadi Murmu
on June 20, opened to the public on Tuesday, with 113 visitors touring the British-era estate.
Formerly known as Rashtrapati Ashiana or the Presidential Retreat, the 172-acre estate has been transformed from an exclusive retreat into a public space celebrating biodiversity, heritage, and sustainability.
Originally established in 1838 as a camp for the Governor General's Bodyguard, it later served as a presidential retreat. It now comprises Rashtrapati Niketan, Tapovan, and Udyan.
Spread over 21 acres, Niketan combines natural beauty with heritage. It features a 200-seat amphitheatre and visitor amenities designed to encourage cultural engagement and reflection. Archival photographs from the Presidential Archives line the corridors, offering glimpses into key moments of India's history and the presidency's evolving role.
The presidential rooms are decorated with traditional Uttarakhand art, including Pahari miniatures, Aipan designs, and local crafts reflecting the region's cultural heritage.
According to staff, nearly two-thirds of the services are currently operational, with activities like horse riding expected to begin later this month.
Tapovan was opened earlier on June 20. Joy Kumar Saha, manager for both Tapovan and Niketan, told TOI that entry to Niketan costs Rs 50 and slots can be booked online between 10 am and 4 pm. Tours are currently limited to groups of 25, led by a team of 10 guides.

Ride cancellations in app-based taxi services rise to 82% in 2025 from 75% in 2023: Survey

Ride cancellations by drivers of app-based taxi services, such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido, continue to be a major pain point for commuters across India. A survey revealed that a staggering 82 per cent of users experienced cancellations in 2025, up from 75 per cent in 2023. The data, from a comprehensive survey by LocalCircles, a community social media platform, involving over 75,000 responses from 325 districts, paints a bleak picture of service reliability despite growing government intervention. According to the findings, one in every two users faced cancellations at least once in the past year, often after the driver accepted the ride. Of the 17,993 users who responded to a related question, 74 per cent said drivers cancelled rides upon learning the destination, digital payment mode, or both. While this number is slightly lower than 84 per cent recorded in 2023, the frequency of such cancellations continues to frustrate users. Consumers report that drivers often cancel trips if the route is deemed unprofitable or if the payment method is not cash. 'This has led to several complaints of forced cancellations, with users sometimes asked by drivers to cancel the ride themselves. The most troubling aspect is that this practice remains rampant even in large metropolitan cities,' the report stated. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has previously taken cognisance of such issues, having issued notices to major aggregators like Uber over allegedly unfair trade practices. The Union Consumer Affairs Ministry is also investigating other platforms, including Ola and Rapido, for possible dark patterns, particularly the practice of nudging customers to tip drivers in advance for better service. Further, 62 per cent of users reported facing surge pricing, a figure that has remained flat since 2023. Long waiting times saw a marginal increase, from 48 per cent in 2023 to 53per cent in 2025. The share of users charged cancellation fees doubled in two years — from 23 per cent to 45 per cent. The survey also revealed that 25 per cent of users now face issues with driver behaviour, up from 8 per cent in 2023, suggesting growing frustration among commuters. About 30 per cent reported unclean vehicles, and 6 per cent flagged safety concerns — both figures unchanged from two years ago. The revised Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) states that if a ride is cancelled by the driver after accepting the journey, a penalty of 10 per cent of the fare not exceeding Rs 100, should be imposed where such cancellation is made without a valid reason. This penalty is to be split between the aggregator and the consumer. The guidelines also recommend installation of tracking devices, insurance for drivers, and a three-month deadline for state-level implementation. According to the survey, 59 per cent of app taxi users believe that unfair trade practices by aggregators remain widespread, despite notices issued by the Central Consumer Protection Authority. Only 18 per cent reported improvements in service. Interestingly, 82 per cent of users want the government to introduce common service standards for all app-based aggregators — a demand that has remained consistent since 2023. To counter the dominance of existing platforms, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had already announced a government-backed cooperative model, 'Sahkar Taxi,' which aims to empower drivers by eliminating commission cuts and intermediary platforms.

Kapur Family Trust to sell ₹2,000 crore stake via Travel Food IPO

Kapur Family Trust, a part of K Hospitality Corp and one of the promoters of Travel Food Services—the operator of airport travel QSRs (quick service restaurants) and lounges network in India—will partially sell its stake in the company, aggregating up to Rs 2,000 crore through the initial public offering (IPO). The IPO is a complete offer-for-sale issue. The price band is set in the range of Rs 1,045 to Rs 1,100 per equity share with a face value of Re 1 each. The IPO will open on July 7 and close on July 9. 'We have a decent amount of cash balance on the books, more than Rs 600 crore as of March end, and we are in a good place as a business to expand and take care of our expansion needs,' Varun Kapur, managing director and chief executive officer, told Business Standard. 'The perspective was to get listed at some point in time, and we have finally taken that decision right now. It (the listing) was the right thing for the business; it gives you credibility. Since the business is in such a good financial position, the additional funds for the company through the IPO didn't make much sense,' he added. After the IPO, the two major promoters—the Kapur Family Trust and SSP Group—will see a change in their shareholding. Both promoters together will hold 85 to 86 per cent of the company, Kapur added. The Kapur Family Trust will retain about 36 per cent, while the SSP Group will increase its stake by 1.01 per cent to 50.01 per cent post-listing. In the travel QSR segment, the company operates 127 brands, including 37 in-house brands such as and Noodle Wok. It also runs franchise outlets of 32 international brands like Pizza Hut, KFC and Subway, and 58 regional brands including Madras Cafe House, Third Wave Coffee and Wow Momo. In the lounge segment, the company was present at 14 airports in India and four international locations—across Malaysia and Hong Kong—as of March 2025. 'Our first focus is to be in APAC (Asia Pacific) and the Middle East (in terms of lounge business). We look at every opportunity, but these are the main focus markets for now,' said Kapur. He also noted a rise in demand from both business and leisure travellers for lounge services in India. Focused on the travel segment, the company further plans to expand its presence on highways. Kapur emphasised that the expansion and modernisation of national highways in India is a huge opportunity, as Indian travellers are increasingly adapting to the Western culture of long road travel. 'We have entered (the highway segment)... (it is) quite small to get a flavour of it. For now, it is just one per cent of our revenue,' he added. During the IPO conference, he mentioned that there is a strong growth opportunity for expressway travel QSR in India.

Grounded British fighter jet becomes viral mascot for Kerala Tourism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: What began last month as an emergency landing by a British Royal Navy F-35B Lightning fighter jet at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has unexpectedly turned into a marketing gift for Kerala Tourism. The jet, part of the UK's most advanced stealth fleet, is awaiting repairs. Now, that brief military issue is being reimagined -- not in air bases or defence circles, but in the world of travel and tourism. A new poster posted by Kerala Tourism on its 'X' handle is making the rounds online. It features a stylised image of the fighter jet parked against a dreamy Kerala backdrop -- coconut trees and lush greenery. A playful caption reads: "Kerala is such an amazing place, I don't want to leave. Definitely recommend." The quote is humorously attributed to "UK F-35B."
