In Rare Open Celebration Of Polyandry, 2 Himachal Brothers Marry Same Woman: 'Proud Of Tradition'

Hatti Polyandry tradition in Himachal Pradesh gains attention as Pradeep and Kapil Negi marry Sunita Chauhan, celebrating cultural legacy openly. India is known for its rich and diverse wedding rituals. These traditions vary by region, religion and community, but often involve elaborate ceremonies, vibrant colors, music, dance and symbolic rituals. Recently, an age-old Hatti Polyandry tradition of Himachal Pradesh caught the attention of viewers, where two brothers got married to a single woman. According to The Tribune, Pradeep Negi and Kapil Negi of Shillai village in Sirmaur district got married to Sunita Chauhan, a woman from the nearby Kunhat village, in a ceremony steeped in the cultural legacy of the Hatti community, breaking the silence on a practice long kept behind closed doors. The event, which was held with complete mutual consent and community participation, was a rare open celebration of polyandry—an age-old ritual in which brothers share a wife. Know More About the Tradition: Polyandry, also known as Jodidaran or Draupadi Pratha, is a traditional practice among the Hatti community of Himachal Pradesh in which multiple brothers share a single wife. This custom, which is common in the Trans-Giri area of Sirmaur district and other parts of Uttarakhand, stems from a desire to preserve family unity and prevent the partition of ancestral land and ensuring that no woman remains widowed. While still practiced, its prevalence is declining due to cultural changes and the impact of modern conventions. Pradeep, the eldest brother, works for the Jal Shakti Department, while Kapil is employed in the hospitality industry abroad. Despite living worlds away, the brothers united in spirit and determination to take the holy vows with Sunita, participating equally in all wedding rituals. Speaking about their unusual marriage, Pradeep said, 'This was a mutual decision," adding that it is about trust, caring and shared responsibility. 'We followed our custom openly because we are proud of our history." Kapil, on the other hand, shared, 'We have always believed in transparency. I may reside overseas, but this marriage ensures support, security and affection for our wife as a united family." Lastly, the bride said, 'This was my choice. I was never pressured. I am aware of this tradition, and I selected it willingly. We made this pledge together, and I have faith in the bond we have built." The Marriage: Spanning three days, the wedding rituals saw several villagers and relatives from nearby locations coming to see this rare yet culturally significant union. Guests were treated to traditional Trans-Giri food, which included specific local delicacies often made for weddings in the region. The atmosphere was happy, with people dancing enthusiastically to Pahari traditional songs, singing and bestowing heartfelt blessings on the bride and both grooms for a happy marriage. view comments First Published: July 19, 2025, 09:54 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 4 killed as taxi plunges near Rohtang; flash floods ravage Himachal Pradesh

SHIMLA: Four people were killed and another critically injured Sunday morning when their taxi veered off a foggy mountain road at Rahni Nala near Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh and plunged into a deep ravine. The crash came as flash floods triggered by twin cloudbursts overnight pounded Chamba and Mandi, pushing the hill state's monsoon death toll to 78, including road accidents that claimed 28 lives. The estimated damage across the state has climbed to Rs 573 crore. Floodwaters swept away roads, bridges, and water mills, while 63 tourists from Punjab, Haryana, UP, Tamil Nadu, and New Delhi - stuck at Seraj valley - were rescued and brought to Karsog in Mandi after emergency road repairs. Blinding fog may have caused the fatal accident near Rohtang Pass, said DSP KD Sharma. Skid marks on the road showed where the vehicle lost control & swerved off the edge. The deceased were identified as Ranjit Singh, 31, and Harvinder Singh, 27, both from Hoshiarpur in Punjab; Narendra Kumar, 34, the driver from Simsa in Kullu; and Dima Ram, 32, from Karsog. Ravi Kumar, 24, also from Hoshiarpur, remains in critical condition. All passengers, including the driver, worked at a hotel in Manali's Simsa area. Mandi remains one of the hardest-hit districts, with 183 roads still closed. Rescue teams from NDRF and SDRF are using drones to search for missing people. Amid mounting criticism over her delayed response, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut visited Thunag in Seraj valley Sunday. "Though I have no official team or personal fund, I still managed to reach the affected areas. I am also a Himachali and a Pahari," she said. Ranaut defended her absence, saying former CM Jairam Thakur advised her to wait until roads reopened. "PM Modi is abroad but fully aware. Centre has acted swiftly," she said.

Rashtrapati Niketan opens to public, draws 113 visitors on day one

Dehradun: The Rashtrapati Niketan in Dehradun, inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu on June 20, opened to the public on Tuesday, with 113 visitors touring the British-era estate. Formerly known as Rashtrapati Ashiana or the Presidential Retreat, the 172-acre estate has been transformed from an exclusive retreat into a public space celebrating biodiversity, heritage, and sustainability. Originally established in 1838 as a camp for the Governor General's Bodyguard, it later served as a presidential retreat. It now comprises Rashtrapati Niketan, Tapovan, and Udyan. Spread over 21 acres, Niketan combines natural beauty with heritage. It features a 200-seat amphitheatre and visitor amenities designed to encourage cultural engagement and reflection. Archival photographs from the Presidential Archives line the corridors, offering glimpses into key moments of India's history and the presidency's evolving role. The presidential rooms are decorated with traditional Uttarakhand art, including Pahari miniatures, Aipan designs, and local crafts reflecting the region's cultural heritage. According to staff, nearly two-thirds of the services are currently operational, with activities like horse riding expected to begin later this month. Tapovan was opened earlier on June 20. Joy Kumar Saha, manager for both Tapovan and Niketan, told TOI that entry to Niketan costs Rs 50 and slots can be booked online between 10 am and 4 pm.
