T.J. Dillashaw: Khamzat Chimaev has 'to break in practice' to beat Dricus Du Plessis

USA Today05-07-2025
T.J. Dillashaw says Khamzat Chimaev has to address his cardio if he wants to become UFC champion.
Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) for the middleweight title in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
No one has been able to stop Chimaev's explosive starts, most recently Robert Whittaker who was quickly submitted at UFC 308. However, when Chimaev hasn't been able to finish his opponents, he visibly slowed down against Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman in what were three-round fights.
"Chimaev needs to get on that Sam Calavitta cardio because that's his only downfall is getting tired," Dillashaw said on the "JAXXON PODCAST." "DDP ain't going to get tired. He needs to work on topping red line stuff. He goes for the kill, and you can only do that for so long. You have to train that section. Everyone's heart rate, you get into the red zone, you start producing lactic acid, you get tired.
"The only way to make that better is to be in that red zone for as long as possible, and train to be there longer and also get used to it mentally. I would put a lot more money on Chimaev if he trains the right way for his cardio. If he doesn't train his cardio the right way, it's going to be hard for him to put DDP away and DDP's going to get him in the later rounds and gas him out."
Dillashaw wants to see Chimaev seriously pushed in practice. He warns him that if he doesn't prepare right, Du Plessis will outlast him.
"He's good, he's strong, his grappling is better, he's got good, technical striking," Dillashaw said of Chimaev. "I just don't think he has the gas tank if he doesn't finish DDP to win the fight. ...If Chimaev's going to win this fight, he's got to break in practice. So you've got to bring in enough guys to break him because he's going to beat up his training partners. If you're not getting beat up in training, you're not training at the right spot."

Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 71

Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki meet Saturday in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 72-56-1 Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki UFC on ESPN 71 preview Duncan (13-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) enters his first UFC co-feature while on a two-fight winning streak. In back-to-back fights, Duncan finished Bolaji Oki and Jordan Vucenic with guillotine chokes in the first and second rounds, respectively. The Dana White's Contender Series veteran won his first pair of UFC fights before his second career setback last February against Manuel Torres. ... Like Duncan, Rebecki (20-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) enters his first co-main event in the UFC and shares an identical record in the promotion. Rebecki comes in after a split decision nod over Myktybek Orolbai at UFC 208 in October. Prior to that, he was finished by Diego Ferreira for his second career loss, which snapped a 16-fight winning streak. Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki UFC on ESPN 71 expert pick, prediction The co-main event on ESPN features a lightweight action fight between Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki. A Polish product who was more than UFC-ready prior to his Contender Series debut, Rebecki has proven to be all gas since setting foot in the octagon. A southpaw pressure fighter who can wrestle and grapple, Rebecki presents a formidable archetype that is difficult to deal with, especially early. Duncan, who has surprised many during his recent run, has shown undeniable improvements since moving shop to American Top Team in South Florida. Although Duncan is officially 0-0 against UFC-level lefties, he works with legendary southpaws that range from Dustin Poirier to Gleison Tibau. Although Duncan getting iced early on the feet or worked over on the floor is the most likely outcome on paper, I suspect that the Scottish fighter presents serious threats in closed quarters. Add in the size edge for the Scot and the fact that Rebecki has a propensity to fight recklessly and fade, and I find myself leaning toward the underdog in this spot. The pick is Duncan by club-and-sub in Round 2. Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki UFC on ESPN 71 odds The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the Polish fighter, listing Rebecki -220 and Duncan +176 via FanDuel. Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki UFC on ESPN 71 start time, how to watch As the co-main event, Duncan and Rebecki are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 11:10 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Sixers star Joel Embiid ranked No. 6 player in the Eastern Conference

There has been a lot of talk about Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid as of late. It makes sense when considering the big fella only played 19 games in the 2024-25 season and admitted to ESPN that there is no timeline for his return, but a lot of people seem to forget how great Embiid is. Embiid did just win the MVP award in 2023 when he averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. He was on his way to winning the award again in 2024 before suffering a left knee injury against the Golden State Warriors on the road in January of that year. He did score 70 points in a game in January of 2024, after all. Embiid is still a fantastic player if healthy and right--of course, that is a big *if* at the moment. ranked their top 10 players in the Eastern Conference and Embiid comes in ranked No. 6 on the list: Some might argue that a former Kia MVP — just two seasons ago! — is slotted too low, while others who cite his inability to stay on the floor might say he's too high. The truth is right here, in the middle, at No. 6 for a center who is a force when healthy. Here are the facts: Embiid has never played 69 or more games in a season and played just 58 combined the last two. His conditioning is a perpetual issue, and his height — combined with his weight — could cause availability problems the rest of his career. That said, he's an MVP candidate when fit and motivated and can take over games at both ends. He has averaged 30.6 ppg or more in three of the past four seasons, is a decent 3-point shooter, has a career 11 rpg average and is among the game's best shot blockers. The players listed ahead of Embiid, for those who don't want to see for themselves, are: At this point in time heading into the 2025-26 season, it's hard to argue Embiid over those five when considering the injury question. Either way, the Sixers will be looking to their superstar big man to lead the way if he is, in fact, healthy and ready to roll.

Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 71

Elves Brener and Esteban Ribovics meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 72-56-1 Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics UFC on ESPN 71 preview Brener (16-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will look to right the ship after dropping back-to-back fights: a unanimous decision to Myktybek Orolbai and a third-round TKO loss to Joel Alvarez. Prior to his recent skid, Brener won five straight. That stretch included four finishes and his first three UFC victories. ... Ribovics (14-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) enters on the heels of a split decision loss to Nasrat Haqparast in March. After dropping his UFC debut, Ribovics won three straight UFC bouts, including a 37-second stoppage of Terrance McKinney. Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics UFC on ESPN 71 expert pick, prediction Serving as a solid action fight at 155 pounds is a battle between Esteban Ribovics and Elves Brenner. Although this fight would be better served in front of a live crowd (as booking Ribovics in back-to-back UFC Apex fights after giving us 2024's Fight of the Year feels incredibly disrespectful), it should be wild while it lasts. Brenner is your classic Brazilian brawler who hails from the legendary Chute Boxe camp, while Ribovics brings the high-paced boxing and body work that both hardcore and casual fans pop for. I'll be curious if Brenner looks to utilize his underrated wrestling in the smaller octagon, but Ribovics appears to be a slippery and scrambly fighter to boot. Even though a better version of Brenner wouldn't shock me, I'll side with Ribovics' durability and pace to produce a finish in Round 3. Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics UFC on ESPN 71 odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the Argentinian fighter, listing Ribovics (-265) and Brenner (+210) via FanDuel. Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics UFC on ESPN 71 start time, how to watch Brener and Ribovics are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 10:40 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.
