Max Holloway: UFC 317 headliner up in the air, Charles Oliveira 'thrives' in underdog role
Max Holloway warns everyone not to count out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. Former UFC champions Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) and Ilia Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) square off for the vacant lightweight title in Saturday's main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) has competed against both fighters. He scored a first-round TKO of Oliveira due to injury in a UFC Fight Night main event in August 2015, and was knocked out for the first time in his career against Topuria at UFC 308. The BMF champion knows first hand how much power Topuria possesses, but is having a hard time picking a winner. "If Ilia gets a finish or a knockout, it wouldn't surprise me," Holloway said on his YouTube channel. "But if Charles wins with a submission or even a knockout finish of his own, it doesn't surprise me. This fight is super up in the air. A lot of people are counting Charles Oliveira out, but that's when he just thrives on being the underdog. How many times have we counted this man out, and he somehow found a way to win? From my perspective, this fight is going to be decided probably in the first three or four minutes of the first round. "Oliveira is going to get touched. Is Ilia going to touch him with something that puts him out cold or is going to hurt him, and then he somehow finds a way to fight back? That's the main thing with this fight. If I was a betting man on this fight, and Charles Oliveira is the underdog, I mean, Charles Oliveira is one of the best fighters in the world to put money on as an underdog. That's all I'm saying. I'm not really picking a winner here. I'm not going to be surprised if Ilia wins by knockout, and I'm not going to be surprised if Charles somehow pulls it off and wins by a finish or a knockout, too. This fight should be super fun." According to DraftKings, Oliveira is a big +330 underdog against former UFC featherweight champion Topuria, who's a -425 favorite.

Charles Oliveira will be aiming to become the first UFC fighter to win the lightweight championship on two separate occasions when the 35-year-old takes on Ilia Topuria in the main event for the vacant 155-pound lightweight title in UFC 317 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Oliveira's first title came in May 15, 2021 when he had defeated Michael Chandler with a second-round TKO at UFC 262. On the other hand, Topuria (16-0-0) is coming after his featherweight triumph with a second-round knockout of Alexander Volkanovski last year at UFC 298. The 28-year-old Topuria then got better of Max Holloway eight months later at UFC 308 to successfully defend his throne. The co-main event will be fought between Alexandre Pantoja and Kai Kara-France with the winner leaving the Octagon with the flyweight championship. The last time these two met was during the Season 24 of The Ultimate Fighter. Pantoja won the two-round clash by unanimous decision. Fans can catch the The UFC 317 main card on ESPN+ play-per-view, starting at 10 PM ET on June 28 (7:30 AM IST on June 29). He was ranked No. 14 in the featherweight division after three UFC bouts at 145 pounds and one contest in the 155-pound division. Three of those scraps ended with Topuria winning via knockout. In his first fight as a ranked featherweight, Topuria dispatched Bryce Mitchell via submission in the second round, earned his first 'Performance of the Night' bonus and moved to No. 9 in the rankings. The reason for this thinking being that Makhachev and Muhammad have trained together and that they would not be willing to face each other inside the Octagon. However, with Jack Della Maddalena defeating Muhammad, that opened the door for Makhachev to move to welterweight. The thinking now being that he will get an immediate title shot against Maddalena in the freshly crowned champ's first title defense. Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz spoke to MMA Junkie about the situation. 'If Belal were to win, Islam was never going to fight Belal, and he's going to stay in the (lightweight) division. But now Jack wins,' Abdelaziz said. 'Islam has beaten everyone in this division, literally.
