Kaizer Chiefs lose R40 million man for free, replacement found

Kaizer Chiefs appear to have parted ways with Edson Castillo, who was once reportedly valued at around R40 million.
The 31-year-old Venezuelan international joined Amakhosi in 2023 and has since played 40 games, scoring five goals. Notably, he was not included in the squad that recently completed pre-season training in the Netherlands.
According to Soccer Laduma , Kaizer Chiefs may have identified a young player to fill Castillo's role. Insiders have reported that Amakhosi has offered 20-year-old Thulani Mabaso a three-year contract, running from July 2025 to June 2028, with an additional one-year option that could extend his stay until 2029.
'He is the one who could feature more this season amongst those recently promoted and they are believed to have offered him a three-year contract with a one-year option. He has done very well in the pre-season and all the involved parties are happy with what's going on regarding his contract,' the insider told Soccer Laduma.
A second source told the publication that Mabaso was viewed as a direct replacement for a Venezuelan international.
'They believe he can replace Castillo. The way he plays and the way he handles himself, he is ready for the senior team and can do a great job. That's why the club, together with the technical team, has agreed to offer him a long-term contract,' the second insider told the Siya crew.
Last year, Soccer Laduma reported that North African teams were interested in Castillo however, Kaizer Chiefs put a R40 million price tag on the South American midfielder.

The principal also criticised the parents for not cleaning up after the events. He wrote: 'When hospitality and generosity became self-serving displays of opulence, and began to pull away from what we aspire to be as a community. The principal added: 'Next year, can we ditch the opulence in favour of a wholesome hospitality devoid of showmanship and loud extravagance?. 'When the extravagance stretches into overconsumption, the message we send to our children is wrong'. Hilton College came under fire over its recent rugby derby day. Kobamelo Kodisang leaves Sundowns, returns to Portugal!

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Kobamelo Kodisang has returned to Portugal on a season-long loan deal. Kodisang has officially signed for Portuguese Premier League outfit AVS Futebol SAD. The dimunitive winger had been touted to leave Sundowns after it became evident that he was not part of Miguel Cardoso's plans. Plans to permanently offload Kodisang hit a snag as he still had four years remaining on his deal with Sundowns. The Bafana Bafana international had joined Sundowns on a five-year deal but he failed to be a regular at the club. And the best way Sundowns could smoothly deal with his departure was through a loan deal. However, both Sundowns and AVS Futebol SAD reached an agreement to include an option to purchase on Kodisang's deal. The 25-year-old winger leaves Sundowns having only featured 13 times for them, scoring twice and registering two assists. Mamelodi Sundowns unveiled Kobamelo Kodisang in July 2024. Ranked: FIVE best Kaizer Chiefs coaches in the PSL era

Kaizer Chiefs have had some great coaches over the past 55 years, but the focus here is on the five best coaches since the inception of the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Only two coaches in the club's history have won the league title within the last 30 years, indicating a lack of consistency. While the club enjoyed success in terms of trophies since their formation, everything changed in 2015 when Stuart Baxter left, leading to a decade without any silverware. The trophy drought came to an end in May when they won the Nedbank Cup. 1. Ted Dumitru The late Romanian coach led Amakhosi to their first PSL league title in the 2003/04 season. Nicknamed 'Master Ted,' Dumitru successfully defended the title the following season in a memorable campaign. During the championship race, Amakhosi managed to overtake the season-long leaders, Orlando Pirates, in the last game of the season. Dumitru was praised for his strategic approach to matches and for inspiring Amakhosi's late-season surge. 2. Muhsin Ertugral Ertugral is one of the most iconic coaches in the PSL era. He won six major trophies during his time at Naturena and is best known for leading 'Operation Vat Alles' in 2001, which saw Chiefs clinch every cup competition in the league. 3. Stuart Baxter Baxter's first tenure saw him win four trophies with Amakhosi, and he became the second coach after Dumitru to win a league title for the team in the PSL era. He left abruptly in 2015 but returned in 2021, although he was unable to replicate the success that saw him guide the Glamour Boys to two doubles. 4. Paul Dolezar Known as 'Mr. Rothmans Cup,' Dolezar claimed three consecutive Rothmans Cups, winning two back-to-back with Chiefs. While he struggled to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title, many believe that with more time, he could have led the team to a league championship. 5. Ernst Middendorp Mazinyo's first stint with Amakhosi was a mixed experience; he won the Absa Cup and the SAA Super 8. He returned to the club a decade later in 2018 and came close to winning the league. Middendorp is one of the few Kaizer Chiefs coaches to lead the club to a second-place finish in the PSL era. Unfortunately, he was dismissed after losing the title in the final 15 minutes of the season. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
