UP: Prisoners carry out Kanwar Yatra in Shahjahanpur district jail
Jail Superintendent Mizaji Lal told PTI that several inmates had approached him with a request to participate in the Kanwar Yatra, which is traditionally held during the month of Sawan.
However, since prisoners cannot leave the jail premises, arrangements were made to bring Ganga water from Panchal Ghat in Farrukhabad, he said.
Around two dozen inmates, dressed in saffron attire, carried symbolic kanwars on their shoulders and performed yatra within the jail compound, chanting Shiva hymns and dancing, before offering sacred water to the deity.
Among the participants was Amandeep Kaur, a British national on death row for killing her husband in 2015. She carried a pot filled with Ganga water and performed the Jalabhishek (water offering ritual) to Lord Shiva.
The inmates saw this ritual as a spiritual cleansing and an act of penance and a prayer for early release, the officer said.
'This initiative is aimed at encouraging positive and spiritual thinking among inmates and such reformative activities allow prisoners to take part in religious and cultural programmes, helping to instil discipline, restraint and spiritual awareness," the jail superintendent added. City Crime Branch (CCB) Inspector Shabbir Hussain has been given additional charge of the Narasimharaja Police Station. Karnataka home minister Dr G Parameshwara acknowledged the discovery of the MDMA drug-manufacturing unit in Mysuru. He stated that the Mumbai Police had received information after arresting an accused, which led them to Mysuru. 'Mumbai police came to Mysuru based on the information. They requested our police for assistance and made the arrests," said Parameshwara, expressing serious concern over the incident: 'This is indeed a worry." The minister assured that further action would be taken. 'Karnataka police will also investigate this matter. This has happened in our state," he emphasised. He added that the investigation would delve into where the drugs were being supplied from Mysuru and whether this was a new operation. While initial reports suggested the operation had been ongoing for about 20 days, Parameshwara indicated it might have been active even longer. The MLA can be heard threatening to hit the secretary with his shoes after he fails to recognise him. The call by the MLA was made to enquire about the status of a death certificate for one Rinki Devi. The secretary answers the call but fails to recognise the MLA, prompting a sharp response. 'You don't know Bhai Virendra? You want me to introduce myself? The whole country knows me," the purported voice of Bhai Virendra can be heard saying. The secretary responds, saying he is not scared and will only show respect if the MLA speaks to him respectfully. 'If you speak respectfully, I will do the same. If you talk crooked, I will talk crooked. I am not scared of you," he can be heard saying. 'Joote se maarunga (I will hit you with a shoe), and you can file a case if you want. You don't follow protocol. You dare to say who is Bhai Virendra?," the MLA threatens. The secretary, however, maintains that he was not aware of the MLA's identity and asks about the work he called to enquire about. 'Please talk about the work. Bihar gangster wanted for murder killed in police encounter in UPs Hapur
Hapur/Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The deceased has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added.
