New Iowa State Fair food 2025: Our favorite fried finds
The big picture: I got to try the new foods as a member of the local judging panel at the fairgrounds on Tuesday.
In total, there are 68 new foods at the 2025 fair, but judges narrowed the finalists to three: bacon chicken ranch eggroll, Three Little Pigs and the scotcheroo shake.
The ultimate winner will be determined by fairgoers in August.
State of play: I judged each dish on its overall taste rating as well as its "fair factor" — does it have a fun twist and make you say, "Only at the Iowa State Fair"?
Here are my (very subjective) thoughts on some of the new foods, in alphabetical order:
Bacon chicken ranch eggroll — Winn & Sara's Kitchen
What it is: Bacon, chicken and white cheddar wrapped in a crispy eggroll and drizzled with homemade ranch ($15).
What I liked: This was so addictive — crispy, salty and zesty, thanks to the ranch on top.
I liked this even more than the bacon cheeseburger eggroll from this same stand, which was voted the best fair food last year.
What could improve: It's a little bit pricey, but definitely filling and shareable.
Overall rating: 5/5, I would wait in line for this.
Butter Cow Tornado — Dairy Zone
What it is: Butterscotch ice cream, gooey butter cake pieces, butterscotch topping and a white chocolate cow on top ($10).
What I liked: The cow chocolate is so cute!
What could improve: It was solid-tasting ice cream, but nothing that gave a wow factor.
Overall rating: 3/5
Fair factor: 3/5 — gotta love a butter cow take.
Chicken Pickle Ranch Rocket on a Stick — JR's SouthPork Ranch
What it is: Sweet and salty pickle-brined chicken on a skewer with dill and garlic pickles, basted with ranch butter. It can also be ordered with AE Dairy dill pickle dip ($9).
What I liked: The brine gives the chicken a nice sweet flavor, and it's a protein-packed dish for all my fellow gym bros out there.
What could improve: Drench that AE dip on that baby there.
Overall rating: 3/5, it was decent!
Fair factor: 3/5 — it's on a stick.
Hawaiian Hog — Iowa Pork Tent
What it is: Thinly shaved pork loin on a bun, served with coleslaw, brown sugar pineapple and sweet chili ($10).
What I liked: The coleslaw is cool and refreshing.
What could improve: The coleslaw was also messy. The pork was ok.
Fair factor: 3/5 — it's more creative than a barbecue pork sandwich.
HoQ lamb wrap — HoQ
What it is: Locally-sourced lamb, tossed in tomato cream sauce and served with Basmati rice, turmeric crème fraîche and kale on naan bread ($18).
What I liked: If I wanted to eat a "real" food at the fair, this would be it. It tastes good and there are vegetables.
What could improve: Again, it's a little bit expensive, but I appreciate that everything HoQ makes is sourced from Iowa farmers — which is what we're celebrating at the fair.
Overall rating: 5/5 — I would order this regularly.
Fair factor: 2/5 — isn't really an "OMG can you believe this" dish.
Sweet Granny's Apple Delight Sundae — Applishus
What it is: Granny Smith apple-flavored soft-serve with apple pie filling, caramel and whipped cream in a waffle cone, served with an apple cookie ($10).
What I liked: The apple soft-serve ice cream was so refreshing, creamy and not over the top. Combined with the pie crust, it reminds me of an all-American apple pie.
It didn't win best sweet fair food, but honestly, justice for Granny.
What could improve: The pie accoutrements give it the fair factor, but honestly, I would like to just eat the soft serve.
Overall rating: 4/5
Fair factor: 4/5
Maple bacon bourbon grilled cheese — What's Your Cheez
What it is: A grilled cheese made with locally-sourced bread, maple bourbon cheddar, candied bacon and a bourbon raspberry maple sauce ($12).
What I liked: The candied bacon was yummy.
What could improve: It was a touch too sweet for me.
Overall rating: 3/5
Fair factor: 4/5 — kudos for creativity.
Nashville hot chicken mac n' cheese pizza — Wiseguys Woodfired Pizza
What it is: Mac and cheese pizza with chicken and a drizzle of hot honey from the Holton Homestead ($8/slice).
What I liked: Gooey cheese and hot honey are always a great savory, spicy combo.
What could improve: Challenge our Midwest palates and give us more Nashville heat!
Overall rating: 3/5
Fair factor: 3/5 — I admire three foods in one bite.
Potato Half & Half Korean corn dog — GoldenKDog
What it is: A Korean corn dog, breaded with doughnut batter and filled with half mozzarella and half of a beef hot dog. It's topped with french fries and deep fried, served with a side of sauce and covered in sugar ($18).
What I liked: I've been saying for ages that a Korean corn dog would be so much better than any sad, Velveeta "cheese on a stick" item at the fair. After eating this, I can confirm that I am right.
What could improve: It was a lil' pricey, but you'll be so full after eating this, and mozza can be expensive.
Overall rating: 4.5/5 — I will go and get this again.
Fair factor: 5/5 — can't get more fair-like than something fried on a stick.
Scotcheroo shake — Over The Top
What it is: Peanut butter and scotcheroo ice cream, with scotcheroo fudge and scotcheroo chunks. Topped with whipped cream, chocolate and caramel sauce and a scotcheroo on top ($12).
What I liked: It's hard not to like any of the listed items, unless you don't get along with peanuts. This is a crowd-pleaser for sure.
What could improve: The taste is just like peanut butter ice cream, so nothing too out of the ordinary.
Overall rating: 4/5
Fair factor: 3/5
Three Little Pigs — Whatcha Smokin? BBQ
What it is: Three Iowa State Fair-inspired ham balls — "corn dog" with mustard and cornbread crumble, "soda fountain" with maraschino cherry, and "funnel cake" with a vanilla glaze and powdered sugar ($13).
What I liked: Wow, wow — this is one of those really funky and weird things that you can only get at the Iowa State Fair. Many kudos for turning a favorite holiday dish into something eyebrow-raising worthy.

Owen Wilson's Golf Comedy STICK Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+ — GeekTyrant
Apple TV+ is keeping the laughs on the green. The streamer has officially renewed Owen Wilson's sports comedy Stick for a second season, just as the Season 1 finale drops today. The series, created by Jason Keller, has been a breakout hit since its June 4 debut, regularly landing in Apple TV+'s daily Top 10. In the spirit of Ted Lasso , Stick blends heartfelt storytelling with offbeat humor, following a group of misfits bonded by golf, friendship, and second chances. Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, better known as Stick , a former golf prodigy whose career flamed out two decades ago. After his marriage falls apart and he's stuck working at a sporting goods store in Indiana, Pryce bets everything on a 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi, played by Peter Dager. Returning for Season 2 are fan favorites including Marc Maron as Pryce's buddy Mitts, Mariana Treviño as Santi's mom Elena, and Lilli Kay as Zero, a bartender turned caddy. Season 1 also featured memorable appearances from Judy Greer, Timothy Olyphant, and real-life golf stars like Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Max Homa, along with cameos from broadcasters Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman. Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss expressed excitement about the show's future: 'With first season of Stick, audiences instantly fell in love with the charming, funny and heartfelt world that Jason, Owen and their all-star team created this season. There's plenty more in the bag for fans of the series, and we're thrilled they'll soon have the chance to discover Pryce Cahill's next chapter.' The Season 1 finale, 'Déjà Vu All Over Again,' teases big developments for Pryce and Santi. While details on Season 2 are under wraps, Keller hinted in an interview that the story's next chapter might shift dynamics in surprising ways. Keller, who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Wilson, shared his excitement about continuing the story: 'I am inspired and humbled by the audience reaction to Stick , and I'm thrilled to be making a second season with this magical cast, led by the incomparable Owen Wilson, and the wonderful creative team at Apple TV+. It's a joy to be able to continue this story. Most importantly, however, this Season 2 order will provide me with an undeniable excuse to play even more golf. Thank you, Apple TV+.' Wilson echoed that sentiment, saying: 'I think we all had a great time making it. It's really nice to see the show connecting with people and to know that we get a chance to continue the story.' Produced by Apple Studios with executive producers from Propagate Content and Entertainment 360, the series boasts an impressive roster of directors, including Valerie Faris, Jonathan Dayton, Jaffar Mahmood, David Dobkin, MJ Delaney, and John Hamburg. I enjoyed the first season of the series as it had a great mix of humor, heart, and sports drama. Season 2 is sure to be another hole-in-one for Apple TV+.

'Stick' cast share what they want next for their characters in Season 2: 'It starts at the top'
Warning: Spoilers for "Stick" Season 1, including the finale We've reached that bittersweet moment of the Apple TV+ show Stick where we've seen the season finale end on a high note, but that means we don't have a new episode to look forward to next week. Going into the finale with Santi's (Peter Dager) estranged father, Gary (Mackenzie Astin), showing up at his golf tournament, fans were interested to see how that dynamic played out. While Santi initially decides to switch out Pryce (Owen Wilson) as his caddie for his dad, when the pressure of the tournament is on and Santi makes some mistakes, we see Gary's verbal abuse. It's in that moment Santi realizes that while he hoped his dad would be supportive, things haven't changed from the circumstances of his youth. But Pryce is there to support Santi in a way Gary never has, as Santi chooses Pryce as his caddie for the final holes. As Pryce tells Santi it's completely his call how he finishes the game, Zero (Lilli Kay) starts singing Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia," as a way to calm down and support Santi. It's a song Pryce already revealed helps him get through stressful moments, and the whole crowd at the tournament follows Zero's lead and starts singing. Santi's success comes back to finish the tournament, but it's not enough to win. The season finale ends with Santi convincing Pryce to play a game of golf with him, telling Pryce to not take it easy on him. As Pryce strikes the ball, resulting in an "oh shit" reaction from Santi, the episode ends. 'I trust them more than any of my particular wishes and desires' With that finale moment, fans are wondering whether Season 2 could include Pryce's return to competitive golf, with creator Jason Keller telling Deadline that's something he'd "want to explore." For Lilli Kay, who plays Zero, while a romantic relationship blossomed between them and Santi, Kay wants Zero to be explored with more independence in Season 2. "My wish list for Zero is for Zero to get to come into their own, with their own passions and their own things, alongside ... getting to support [Santi] and encourage him," Kay told Yahoo Canada. "Knowing the sort of partnership they have, I know that he would show up for them the same way that they show up for him." But one thing Kay highlighted for Season 1 is the effective way that the show's creative team, Keller and executive producer and writer Christopher Moynihan in particular, crafted Zero, a gender-fluid character, in Stick. "This was a conversation that I had with Jason before even the chemistry read with Peter, 'I want to make sure that I'm the right person for this, ... that my identity is aligned with this character and what you're trying to do here,'" Kay said. "First of all, Jason just blew me away in that conversation. And second of all, we continued to have conversations every step of the way." "They were so inviting and welcoming and collaborative about all of it. ... We had a lot of the scripts and we were on the phone going, OK does this beat track? Does this make sense? And being that Zero and I identify the same way, I think that was a really helpful tool, because I was allowed to be in dialogue with everyone. It became just really organic and really easy to do that authentically, because it was just me." For Peter Dager, while he jokingly identified that he'd love for Santi to "have a six pack" in Season 2, he stressed that he has total confidence in the team behind the show to continue the story in a positive way. "It starts at the top," Dager said. "You can sort of save some things as an actor and make things happen on the day, but if the structure is good, then everybody who gets added to bring that thing to life, it's probably going to be good, or feel good." "Jason and Chris in the room, and Apple as a studio fully believing in it, it's felt throughout the whole set. And so if we get to do it again, I completely trust the people at the top to make sure that we've got a good story and everybody's fulfilled, and everybody feels like they've got something to do the next time. ... I trust them more than any of my particular wishes and desires."

Zac Efron's shirtless golf groove is the perfect 'Stick' TV theme song: Hear it now
The theme song to the AppleTV+ golf series "Stick" is so infectiously good that the ditty is the soundtrack to Zac Efron's viral shirtless golf outing. The actor and his brother, Dylan Efron, showed off impressive swings — and serious abs — in the golfing video posted to Dylan's TikTok and Instagram Reels accounts on July 22 with the simple comment: "Sticks." The comment referred to the series "Stick," which features the theme song, "And It's Gone." The Efron brothers are feeling the song that plays in the video. "Stick" stars Owen Wilson as one-time golf phenom Pryce Cahill, who overcomes personal trauma to make a comeback as a mentor. Executive producer Jason Keller told USA TODAY that he struggled to find the perfect song to reflect Cahill's "vibe" of optimism, pain, and renewal for the series (which is now streaming its Season 1 finale). Owen Wilson talks 'Stick': Star loved outputting these pros in AppleTV+ series "I was looking for the right feeling, but I just couldn't find it," said Keller, who stumbled across the Ohio-based folk band Caamp during the search. "I knew immediately they were the perfect fit for the show. I've since learned they are a very popular band." Keller asked Caamp lead singer Taylor Meier, who happens to be an avid golfer, to compose the "Stick" theme song. "I had to kind of talk him into it. I think he wanted nothing to do with me," Keller admitted. "But I asked him to read the scripts and kept talking to him about what I was hoping for." Keller was working on the golf set when he received a sound file and a text from Meier. "He wrote, 'Try this. Is this what you're looking for? And it was that song,'" Keller continued. "I played it out loud for everyone while we were shooting the show. It was perfect right out of the gate." What's the theme song from 'Sticks'? Caamp recorded "And It's Gone" while making the band's recently released fifth studio album, "Copper Changes Color." The album debuted on Spotify's Top 10 Albums: Debut USA. The band is on its first headlining tour in three years with back-to-back sold-out shows at New York City's Radio Music Hall (Sept. 12 and 13). You can stream "And It's Gone" here. Note: The song title has nothing to do with whatever happened to Zac Efron's shirt on the golf course. How to watch Owen Wilson in 'Stick' All of Season 1 of "Stick" is now streaming on AppleTV+. On July 23, the day the "Stick" Season 1 finale dropped, AppleTV+ confirmed that Season 2 is in the works. Listen to "Copper Changes Color" here.
