Six family members found dead in car pulled from Jitra river
The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 8.38 am reporting a Proton Iswara sedan floating in the river. Firefighters retrieved the vehicle and confirmed the presence of six bodies inside. Identification of the victims is still underway.
This follows reports that a family of six had gone missing after failing to return home from a visit to relatives in Taman Aman, Jitra, last Saturday. The missing persons were identified as Mohd Azim Ezzat Ishak, 32, his wife Nurul Hidayah Khalijah Razman Effendy, 31, and their four children aged between six months and nine years.

Malaysian ferry tragedy victim buried in East Java
JAKARTA: The remains of Fauzey Awang, a Malaysian who died in the Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry tragedy last week, were laid to rest in East Java on Friday night, in accordance with his final wish. The deceased was buried far away from his native Terengganu, but close to his wife he visited every three months. Fauzey, 55, was among the passengers on board the ill-fated ferry, which was carrying 65 people and 22 vehicles when it sank near the Bali Strait on the night of July 2, nearly half an hour after departing Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, East Java, for Bali. He had been travelling in a tour van aboard the ferry, on his way to catch a flight from Bali. His remains were later found off Perancak Beach near Jembrana, Bali, on Thursday morning. Indonesian authorities identified him based on his clothing and personal effects before transferring the remains to Blambangan Hospital in Banyuwangi, East Java, for forensic examination. Banyuwangi police chief Commissioner Rama Samtama Putra said the body was handed over to the family following coordination between Indonesia's Foreign Ministry and the Malaysian Embassy, and the submission of a formal consent letter from Fauzey's next of kin for his burial. "The family, who had travelled from Malaysia, met the victim's wife here and agreed on a local burial," Rama said in a statement. Before the tragedy, Fauzey sent a message to his daughter, Syifa Amerah Fauzey, from his first marriage, expressing his wish to be buried in Banyuwangi next to his teacher's grave. His remains were buried at the village cemetery in Dusun Lidah, Gambiran, Banyuwangi. "He worked in Malaysia but came home every three months to be with his wife," said Sumarni, a local relative, as reported by TribunNews. As of Friday, 47 people have been accounted for, with 30 survivors and 17 confirmed dead. Police probing Shila Amzah's assault claim
KUALA LUMPUR: An investigation is underway into a claim by singer Shila Amzah (pic), who alleged she was assaulted by a popular singer. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said police have recorded statements from two people. He said Shila, whose real name is Nurshahila Amir Amzah, lodged a report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here at 5.31pm on Thursday. 'So far, the individual alleged to have assaulted Shila has not been summoned, but efforts are underway to obtain a statement from the person involved. 'The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code,' he told Bernama yesterday. On Thursday, the media reported that Shila claimed she was assaulted by a popular singer during a rehearsal session for a concert.

MCMC identifies 10 subsidiary instruments to facilitate Online Safety Act implementation
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified 10 subsidiary instruments, including regulations and codes, to facilitate the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act 2025, says Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said the instruments were at various stages of development, with prioritisation guided by the need to ensure alignment with the act's objectives and scope. She said the development of the regulations is contingent upon completion of the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), followed by approval from the Attorney General's Chambers (A-GC). "MCMC anticipates completing the development of the subsidiary instruments between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, subject to the complexity and readiness of each item," she said at The Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) 30th Anniversary celebration here tonight. Also present were the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, MBOR chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio, MBOR chief executive officer Christopher Wong, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Head of TV, Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali. Meanwhile, during her speech, Teo said MBOR would be certifying a new national entry for a book on child sexual grooming by Mohamed Nazri Prem Nasir on Aug 2 at the Universiti Malaya. She said child sexual grooming was one of the core concerns addressed under the Online Safety Act 2025, a landmark legislation aimed at creating a safer digital space, especially for young and vulnerable users. She said the upcoming 13-episode television series, Malaysia Luar Biasa, produced in collaboration with Bernama, noting that the programme would spotlight 30 to 40 national records featuring extraordinary Malaysians. "Notably, the programme will debut during the National Day celebration week, making it even more special as we honour not just our nation's independence but also the spirit, resilience, and excellence of Malaysians who have made their mark. "It's a timely reminder that patriotism can be expressed through achievement and that greatness can come from every corner of our beloved country," she said. The programme will officially premiere on August 26, 2025, at 8.30pm on Bernama TV (Astro 502). Teo said the significant milestone would add to Bernama's inspiring achievements, which also included a record in MBOR for its participation in the "Longest Non-Stop Multi-language National Broadcast." She said Bernama TV, then known as Bernama News Channel (BNC), was one of the key platforms delivering the historic 25-hour non-stop national broadcast in four languages, held from Sept 16 to 17, 2019, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. Meanwhile, Teo also lauded the National Information Dissemination Centre's (Nadi) achievements at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards 2025 in Geneva earlier this week, through its Pulau Banggi Initiative and Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project. She said as of June 30, a total of 1,097 Nadi centres had been successfully established out of the 1,099 planned nationwide, while the remaining two centres in Sabah were in the final stages of implementation.
