IIM Kashipur Clarifies Viral Placement Opt-Out Email, Assures Continued Student Support
The email sent by the Student Placement Committee was intended to accurately categorise students and better support those who are currently unplaced, IIM Kashipur said.
A recent post on microblogging site X shared by Siddharth Gopi, Co-founder of TopHire.co, claimed that IIM Kashipur has asked unplaced students to officially opt out of the placement process. Students are being asked to exclude themselves from the placement process so that the institute can claim 100 per cent placement, the post stated.
In response, IIM Kashipur has clarified that the it is part of a regular process required for placement data audits and assured support to students who are still 'unplaced".
Some students either seek job opportunities outside the placement process or decide not to participate in placements for various personal or professional reasons. Hence, the email sent by the Student Placement Committee was intended to accurately categorise students and better support those who are currently unplaced, the IIM said. The institute added that it will continue to be provide support to all unplaced students.
IIM Kashipur said it publishes third-party audited placement reports in accordance with the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) for the past two years as it helps maintain transparency, the institute said.
As part of this auditing process, it is required to collect signed declarations from each student— based on the classification table provided — to ensure that students who have secured jobs off-campus or are pursuing further education are not incorrectly classified as 'unplaced", the institute further clarified.
'To ensure transparency, IIM Kashipur has been publishing third-party audited placement reports in accordance with the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) for the past two years, and we will continue to do so. As part of the auditing process, we are required to maintain signed declarations from each student—based on the classification table provided—without which students who have secured jobs off-campus or are pursuing further education would be incorrectly classified as 'unplaced", the IIM said in a statement.
'This classification not only helps in maintaining accurate records but also ensures that we provide correct data to prospective recruiters. The intent behind the email sent by the Student Placement Committee was to appropriately categorise students and to better support those who are currently unplaced. The email also clearly states that support will continue to be extended to all unplaced students," it added.
IIM Kashipur has invited over 180 companies this year, it said. The audited placement report will soon be released on the official IIM Kashipur website.

IIM-Ahmedabad has seen a 10-15% increase in applications for the one-year full-time MBA (MBA-PGPX) programme in each of the last couple of years, said Amit Karna, the institute's chairperson for the MBA-PGPX programme. The number of women enrolled increased by nearly 45% in the same period. The number of applicants has increased at IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Indore as well. Lucknow has also witnessed an upswing in female candidates, said a spokesperson. ISB's PGP MAX programme comprises 24 courses structured around eight cross-functional themes and executive coaching, said deputy dean, Academic Programmes, Deepa Mani. 'Notably, candidates from IT, fintech, and engineering backgrounds have successfully pivoted into strategic and product-oriented roles upon completion of the programme,' said Karna of IIM-Ahmedabad. IIM-Ahmedabad's Dubai campus set to redefine India's educational soft power: Institute director
The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A), one of India's most prestigious business schools, is all set to launch its first international campus in Dubai this September. The ambitious expansion, envisioned by IIM-Ahmedabad Director Bharat Bhasker in 2023, will begin operations with a one-year MBA programme and introduce two key research centres, one dedicated to case study development and the other focused on start-up incubation. Bhasker, in conversation with IANS at IIM-A, expressed immense satisfaction over the swift execution of the plan. "The Dubai campus is something I envisioned in 2023, and now I'm happy to see it materialise. I'll be visiting the campus next week," he shared. "We've curated the curriculum with a regional lens, drawing on case studies and business practices relevant to the Middle East and Africa." The move comes after IIM-A signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government in April this year. The agreement, signed in Mumbai, officially established the Dubai campus in the Dubai International Academic City, making IIM-A the first among India's management institutes to set up an overseas campus. Bhasker sees this as a moment of strategic significance not only for the institute but for India as a whole. "While Western countries are increasingly shutting their doors to international students, India must seize the moment. Education is India's most potent soft power, and this campus is a strategic tool in building long-lasting influence," he said. "Just as China uses its manufacturing and trade to build global influence, India must leverage its strength in quality education and its English-speaking workforce. If India wants to be the leader of the Global South, this is the way," he said. The new campus aims to attract a wide array of students from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, North Africa, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The first cohort will comprise around 40 to 50 students, with the long-term goal of scaling up to a 900-student capacity over the next decade. According to Bhasker, Dubai was a natural choice. "We've been offering executive education in the region for years. The familiarity and trust we've built made it a logical step forward," he said. The launch comes at a time when global applications to MBA programmes are facing a downturn. According to data, there was a 5 per cent reduction in applications to graduate business schools worldwide in 2023, the second consecutive year of decline. Bhasker, however, remains optimistic about India's prospects. "The global numbers may be declining in the US or Europe, but India is different. We have a young population, a fast-growing economy, now the third-largest globally. As opportunities grow, so does the demand for skilled managers. That's where institutions like IIMA come into play," he said. When asked what makes a good manager today, Bhasker responded with clarity: "Commitment and vision are important, but most of all, empathy. Business is often reduced to profit and loss, but empathy takes you a long way." Looking ahead, Bhasker shared an exciting next step for the IIM-A campus: the establishment of a School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. "The way we traditionally taught management doesn't work anymore. The way we teach management today is very different from the past. Today, AI, technology, and science are integral to leadership and decision-making. Management curriculum and the way institutes teach must evolve," he said. "Being proactive is essential," he said. The Dubai campus is not merely an international expansion; it is a strategic, future-facing initiative rooted in regional relevance, educational diplomacy, and an evolving idea of what management education should look like in the 21st century.

'It is designed for learners who have been historically excluded: students from Hindi-medium schools, rural and small-town youth, NEET (not in education, employment or training) learners, homemakers looking to resume education, first-generation college aspirants and students from non-commerce academic backgrounds,' said Banerjee. The unique aspect of this programme is its inclusive approach to language of instruction, aligned with the National Education Policy mission that aims to promote both Indian and foreign languages in education. While the programme offers Hindi as the primary medium of instruction in the first three years, students have the choice of opting for English right from the first year. Live Events The institute is deploying artificial intelligence (AI), using AI-based voice cloning and lip-syncing to allow students to access the same content in both languages, enhancing comprehension and accelerating English proficiency, without burdening faculty with additional work. The programme is structured to offer multiple exit points: a certificate after Year 1, a diploma after Year 2, a BBA after Year 3 and a BBA (Honours) after Year 4. This flexibility has been introduced keeping in mind that many learners, especially women or those from economically weaker backgrounds, cannot always commit to a residential course. The first year of the programme focuses on 'workplace survival and entrepreneurship', laying the groundwork for income generation and micro-enterprise; while the second year develops 'MSME and operations readiness', equipping students with the tools to manage or contribute meaningfully to micro, small and medium enterprises. The third year focuses on 'strategy and leadership', deepening skills in decision-making, finance and project execution, and the fourth year prepares learners for 'global and research readiness', transitioning to full English instruction and postgraduate preparedness. The programme is mobile-first, low-bandwidth friendly and largely asynchronous. Content will be hosted on public platforms like YouTube for easy access, and assessments will be conducted at regional centres. Tuition fee for the programme starts at Rs 50,000 per year and rises to Rs 2,00,000 by the fourth year. But merit-based and need-based scholarships are offered simultaneously. A student from a low-income household who performs well could pay Rs 87,500 for the entire three-year BBA, and Rs 1.37 lakh for the four-year honours degree.
