PM visit sets stage for AIADMK-BJP bonhomie

Time of Indiaa day ago
Trichy: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit and road show planned in Trichy on Sunday have set the stage for cadres and functionaries of AIADMK and BJP to smoothen out ruffles, if any, and work together ahead of the 2026 state assembly election.
As BJP cadres have been joining AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami's ongoing 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' state-wide campaign, AIADMK has vouched to mobilise cadres for PM's road show scheduled on Sunday morning. Palaniswami met Modi at the Trichy airport on his arrival from Tuticorin. He was accompanied by former ministers S P Velumani, K P Munusamy, and Natham Viswanathan.
Modi is scheduled to take part in a commemorative event to mark Rajendra Chola's birth anniversary and 1,000 years of the king's maritime expedition to southeast Asia at the ancient Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Ariyalur district.
With the state poll less than a year away, the BJP has planned a rousing welcome for the PM.
While a chopper will fly the PM from Trichy airport to Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, located about 110 km away, an 8km road show has been planned for the PM from the airport to the hotel where he will stay. "A reception point has been planned near Trichy corporation's main office with cadres from at least five BJP mandals greeting and welcoming the PM.

AIADMK will take part in the road show too," said BJP Trichy urban district secretary (media) Sadesh Parameswaran.
Functionaries said the PM's road show will serve as a prelude to NDA's preparations for the assembly election and showcase the strength of the alliance.
AIADMK has erected banners at multiple spots in Trichy to welcome the PM with portraits of former party supremo J Jayalalithaa and Palaniswami along with pictures of their party founder M G Ramachandran and party idealogue C N Annadurai. "They (BJP) are participating in our campaigns, so ideally, we (AIADMK) should reciprocate. Banners and party flags have been erected on the road show route to welcome our PM," said AIADMK Trichy urban district secretary J Srinivasan.
"The bond between BJP and AIADMK is strengthening, and the roadshow will further improve it," said an AIADMK district level functionary.

Rebate checks coming to bank accounts of millions - Trump floats payouts to Americans amid Epstein fallout

US President Donald Trump is trying to change the story as the Epstein scandal continues to loom large. The move seems to have been timed to take the public's attention away from the renewed interest in his past ties to Epstein. Donald Trump has hinted that he might send Americans rebate checks that would be paid for by higher tariff revenue . The announcement comes at a time when people are once again talking about Trump's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Trump is trying to shift the focus to economic gains while staying away from the ongoing Epstein fallout . How is Donald Trump planning to use tariff money? Live Events At the White House, he told reporters, "We're thinking about that actually—we have so much money coming in, we're thinking about a little rebate.' 'We have so much money coming in from tariffs that a little rebate for people of a certain income level might be very nice.' He is doing this by collecting more than $100 billion in tariffs. According to U.S. Treasury data, tariff revenue topped $100 billion for the first time this fiscal year, indicating that the Trump administration's policies have resulted in higher levies. ALSO READ: National chicken finger day: Here's how to get a free chicken finger this July 27 The U.S. government could receive $2.8 trillion in tariff revenue over the next ten years, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who stated on Tuesday that he anticipates the growth to continue. Although the administration has previously suggested a rebate, Trump's remarks come as he tries to shift the public's attention away from the Epstein scandal and toward more conventional GOP areas of strength, like immigration and the economy, as per a areport by the Daily Beast. Could rebate checks shift public attention? However, despite efforts to calm the situation, it appears to be getting worse in battleground states that will be crucial for the midterm elections next year as well as in Washington, where House Republicans joined Democrats on Wednesday to vote on the release of the Epstein files. Pennsylvania-based GOP consultant Christopher Nicholas told The Daily Beast, "It's resonating in the'real world,' as you might say, only because it's pretty obvious that no one knows what they're doing about it." Additionally, issues of this nature simply cut across traditional partisan divides. Everyone in society agrees that child abuse is horrible and wrong, and it appears that this case has been handled badly from the beginning. Why now, amid renewed Epstein scrutiny? The announcement, however, didn't happen in a vacuum. It followed days of escalating attention on Trump's past relationship with Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal trafficking charges. Though Trump has long denied any close connection to Epstein, his comments Friday made it clear he's feeling the heat. According to Trump, the public ought to concentrate on Epstein's other associates, citing former Harvard president and Treasury Secretary Larry Summers as well as former President Bill Clinton. He even offered to give a "list" of individuals to examine, claiming that it would include "hedge fund guys" who shared a residence with Epstein. And as the 2026 midterms get closer, Trump seems eager to get more support from voters with lower and middle incomes. He is relying on a promise of real financial help, along with claims of being a good economic steward, to protect himself from a scandal that won't go away. The rebate plan is still just that: a plan. But the timing, tone, and purpose of his actions show that Trump knows exactly what kind of political storm he's trying to avoid. Whether Americans believe the economic pitch or want more information about Epstein is a question that could shape the next few months. FAQs Who would be eligible for Trump's proposed rebate checks? Trump suggested that they could target people with specific income levels, but he did not elaborate. Is this the first time President Trump has mentioned tariff rebates? No, but it's the first time he's mentioned it in light of the growing controversy surrounding Epstein's ties.

‘NASA is under attack': Massive NASA layoffs see 20% staff fired amid Donald Trump's fund cuts; nationwide protests erupt

Image: Nearly 20% of NASA's workforce — approximately 3,870 employees — have exited the agency following major funding cuts under the Trump administration's plan to downsize federal agencies. The layoffs stem from the Deferred Resignation Program, with officials describing the move as an effort to make NASA 'leaner and more efficient.' The decision has triggered widespread backlash from scientists, engineers, and space policy experts, who warn of serious risks to the agency's future missions. Nationwide protests erupted over the weekend, with current and former employees calling the move a direct threat to America's leadership in space. NASA fires thousands under federal downsizing drive The second round of the Deferred Resignation Program, which closed late Friday, saw roughly 3,000 resignations on top of 870 from the first wave of departures after Trump returned to office. Including regular attrition, NASA's workforce has shrunk from over 18,000 to around 14,000, marking a 20% reduction. Those resigning have been placed on administrative leave until their official exit. The move was orchestrated under the Department of Government Efficiency, currently led by Elon Musk. NASA insists that safety remains a top priority, yet internal experts are raising alarms about the loss of institutional knowledge and highly skilled personnel. With Mars and Moon missions central to the Trump administration's ambitions, critics argue these cuts threaten mission readiness. Former NASA officials and space industry leaders are questioning the agency's capacity to manage complex space programs in the coming years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Comfortably: 60m2 prefabricated bungalow for the elderly in Tebas Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Protests erupt over 'brain drain' and loss of legacy Protests have broken out in several cities including Houston, Washington D.C., and Cape Canaveral, where current and former NASA staff, union representatives, and supporters gathered to oppose the mass layoffs. A letter titled The Voyager Declaration, signed by hundreds of former employees, warns that irreplaceable expertise is being lost at a critical moment for U.S. space exploration. 'This is not streamlining,' one protestor said, 'this is sabotage.' Doubts over leadership as Trump's NASA pick falters Adding to the turmoil, NASA is still being led by an acting administrator after tech billionaire Jared Isaacman, Trump's initial nominee backed by Elon Musk, was rejected for the role. In the absence of permanent leadership, critics argue that the agency is navigating its most challenging transformation without a clear long-term vision or stable command structure.

About 60 volunteers participated in the drive, which lasted two hours in the morning. "This is not about publicity. We don't do it for photos. It's about real work, real impact," said a volunteer. Expressing gratitude over the PM's words, the corporator said, "It is an honour that our small but consistent efforts reached the ears of the Prime Minister. This recognition boosted our morale and inspired us to keep serving the river selflessly." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adam Lambert, 43, Takes off His Makeup and Leaves Us Without Words The Noodle Box Undo Irrespective of the weather conditions, the cleanliness activity is carried out round the year, he highlighted.
