I felt smug about my airfare, until I realised it was the wrong airline
Why on Earth am I flying home via Delhi?
Duffer that I am, I've accidentally clicked on the wrong flight on Trip.com. The time is almost identical, the price likewise, the flying time ditto. The only major difference is the route, and the airline. I am flying with an Indian carrier. Oh well, at least the food should be good.
I don't really think about it again until the morning of my flight home. I arrive at Heathrow just after 7am, to find my 9.45am flight delayed by four hours. They send an email while I am in the cab, which of course I don't see until I arrive.
As excuses go, they have a pretty good one: the airspace over the subcontinent is closed because India and Pakistan are firing missiles at each other.
I am about to wheel away to find a much-needed coffee when it dawns on me: assuming this plane really does take off in four hours (which, given the conflict, feels like a stretch), I will miss my connecting flight.
'Right,' says the check-in fellow. 'You'd better follow this man to the service desk.'
Sleep- and coffee-deprived, my neurons are firing about as well as a clapped-out Morris Minor, but out the corner of my eye I spy some bloke sprinting through the terminal. He is five metres, 10 metres, 20 metres ahead of me, doesn't once make eye contact, and says not a word.
I have no idea if he is the person I am meant to be following, but in the absence of a better option, that's what I do. And then he stops, and lo and behold it is the Air India service desk.

The seats are arranged in a 3-3 configuration, and my aisle seat is second from the back. I selected this seat hoping to score a spare seat beside me. I'm thrilled to see this has worked. The 737-800 NG is an older style of plane, a relic from former regional carrier Silk Air. For several reasons, this plane is an outlier in the Singapore Airlines fleet. It's worth noting that this plane has the only business class seats in the fleet that do not lie flat. Entertainment + tech Under the seat is a universal power outlet compatible with Australian plugs and a USB-A port. These are shared between passengers on a two-between-three basis. Another deviation: There's no seat-back entertainment screens. A subset of the KrisWorld Entertainment system can be viewed from your own device; I've forgotten my headphones, so that counts me out. The crew provides headphones, to plug into the armrest to listen to one of the 12 channels, as in the olden days. Wi-Fi? I'm afraid not. Service Something that's not an anomaly is the service. The Singapore Airlines crew is as attentive and efficient as always. When I realise the overhead locker above my seat is reserved for crew use, a friendly crew member kindly whisks my bag to a space further forward. Food The spiced chicken in creamy tomato gravy is finished by the time the cart gets to me, but my fish arrabbiata pasta, and salad of barley, cucumber and smoked salmon are tasty. Wines, beers and spirits are complimentary and later there are individual tubs of ice-cream. Surprisingly, there is no menu card in the seat back, nor on the limited selection of KrisWorld entertainment on my device. Sustainability Among many airlines, Singapore Airlines has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.* Newer-generation aircraft help this cause by using less fuel, but not this one, which could be one reason the airline plans to replace it. Loading One more thing Singapore Airlines flies these dinosaurs on three routes, from Singapore to Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu. By October, the airline plans to replace all 737-800 NGs with the more modern 737-Max 8 (which it already flies, with Boeing 787 Dreamliners, on the Kathmandu route). Seat pitch in economy will remain the same, but all seats on the new planes will have entertainment screens and Wi-Fi. Business class seats will lie flat, standardising this in the entire fleet. The price From about $1600 return for economy class from Sydney or Melbourne**. The verdict Five hours was long enough on the worst Singapore Airlines plane. The service was excellent, the food was good, but this does not feel like a Singapore Airlines experience. Our rating out of five ★★★

Want an upgrade on your flight? Here's what works (and what doesn't)
'You've been upgraded' are the sweetest words you'll ever hear at the check-in desk. It's honey to a bear, entry to the gates of heaven, a place among the rich and powerful … and it's about as rare as a lottery win. You might have a mate who knows someone whose cousin got an upgrade. A couple of them, actually. They arrived at the check-in desk for their economy class flight suited up like they were heading for the Birdcage at the Melbourne Cup and a miracle happened. Instead of economy, their boarding class bore the magical words 'business'. Legends! Thus adding fuel to the myth that says if you dress nicely, you just might get an upgrade, but honestly, this is a furphy. Dressing in designer wear and asking for an upgrade will only provide temporary amusement for the check-in staff. They do not have discretion to offer upgrades, and by themselves, charm, a genuine Louis Vuitton case or a pearly smile won't get you a seat at the pointy end. Likewise, claiming it's a honeymoon trip, a special anniversary, a birthday or a first-time meet-up with your Facebook love interest. Don't even think about it. What gets you that upgrade In a word, loyalty. Loyalty is everything when it comes to air travel upgrades. Airlines have long memories and big databases, and they know exactly how often you fly with them and how many points and status credits you've accumulated, and those are the metrics that will help you get an upgrade. With a purse bulging with points and status credits, you're at the front of the queue when upgrade opportunities come your way. Travellers on fully flexible fares are next in line. They've paid for the privilege, and airlines are more inclined to look after them when seats need shuffling. Beyond those, the pool dries up quickly. Between loyal frequent flyers and full-fare passengers, there's usually no shortage of contenders when an upgrade is on the cards, leaving little room for hopeful glances or whispered charm at the gate. When points are not enough Even when you're sitting on a zillion points, getting an upgrade is not a shoo-in. I recently requested an upgrade to business using points on a Singapore Airlines return flight from Sydney to Delhi. I paid full price for a flexi premium economy seat, the highest category, which is a points-upgradeable ticket. When I submitted the request via the airline's MySQupgrade website, the response was no-go. I called the airline's customer service and was told yes, I could upgrade with points, but not on the flights I'd booked. I'd have to switch to a flight leaving Delhi the following day, at an inconvenient time with a much longer stopover in Singapore, and that wasn't going to work.
