Durban rolls out the red carpet for over 45,000 visitors at the Hollywoodbets Durban July

Image: ZamaNdosi Cele Durban is ready to roll out the red carpet for visitors as the city co-hosts the 129th edition of the Hollywoodbets Durban July. These are the words of eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, who expressed his excitement during the launch of festivities at Weston Square and The Barn, the city's newly developed lifestyle and retail hub touted as the region's "Midrand", strategically situated between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse will be the epicentre of this prestigious horse racing event taking place on Saturday, drawing close to 45 000 local and international visitors. This influx is expected to result in a significant boost for the local economy, with hotel occupancy anticipated to reach 80% over the event weekend. Xaba addressed local media and dignitaries, including the Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning, Thembo Ntuli, and marketing leaders from Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle Racing. He enthusiastically declared, 'Whether you are a horse racing enthusiast or fashionista, the Durban July is an event you cannot miss. It remains the greatest horseracing event on the continent.' In a bid to enrich the experience for visitors, the city has orchestrated a variety of events and entertainment options beyond the Greyville Racecourse, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Some visitors have already arrived, and local businesses are beginning to prepare their marquees in anticipation of the festivities. The mayor expressed confidence in the event's success, highlighting the collaborative effort with Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle Racing to deliver a stunning spectacle. 'This event presents another opportunity for Durban to demonstrate that it continues to be a premier destination for events, sports, and entertainment,' he noted, underlining the city's commitment to showcasing itself as a major player on the global stage. Xaba emphasised the city's ongoing efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience and maintain a safe environment for all attendees. 'Our law enforcement agencies have developed an integrated safety plan, supported by the private security industry. Therefore, visitors are guaranteed a safe stay in the city with high police visibility,' he stated. Durban has faced numerous challenges in the past, including the July 2021 unrest, the floods in April 2022, the Covid pandemic and not participating in Blue Flag beach status ratings in 2023, resulting in tourism being impacted. 'As part of reviving tourism in the city, I will be meeting key role players in the tourism industry, including the hospitality sector, so that together we can develop a common programme for enhancing visitors' experiences in the city. "This will also assist us in gaining insight into their future development plans and ensure that we are aligned,' he said. With a focused plan for growth and revitalisation, all eyes are glued on the city as Durban stands ready to welcome thousands to the glittering festivities of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, marking a new chapter in its journey towards rejuvenating the tourism sector.

Durban July set to gallop in over R700 million for City's economy, says mayor

It's all systems go as the City prepares to host Africa's largest horseracing event, the Hollywoodbets Durban July taking place on 5 July at the Greyville Racecourse. Image: Supplied As South Africa gears up for the much-anticipated Durban July 2025 horse racing event on Saturday, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba has revealed that the city is set to reap major economic benefits, including a boost of over R700 million to Durban's GDP and the creation of more than 4,000 jobs. Themed 'Marvels of Mzansi', the prestigious horse racing event and fashion extravaganza is expected to attract approximately 50, 000 visitors to Durban with a hotel occupancy of 80%. This year's theme encourages the celebration of cultural heritage, diversity, and landscapes. Speaking to the media at the grand media launch at Westown Mall in eShongweni on Wednesday, Xaba described the annual race as a cornerstone of the city's events calendar and a significant contributor to its economy. "It will bring into the city over R278 million direct spend and over R700 million investment into our GDP. I am excited because through that, we also create jobs. Over 4,000 people will get jobs while launching this event in this place," Xaba said. The anticipated event is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the city. The launch was held at Westown Mall, which Xaba highlighted as part of a new R15 billion development in eShongweni. So far according to Xaba, R1.5 billion has been invested in the project, with the municipality contributing R600 million to bulk infrastructure to support the area's growth. Video Player is loading. While the pressure to secure engagements can be daunting, Nxumalo's words serve as a reminder that the road to success is often paved with perseverance. To aid these artists in their journey toward success, we have compiled essential tips below to help them secure bookings. Build a strong online presence In today's digital age, your online presence is often the first impression potential bookers will have of you. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are powerful tools for connecting with your audience and sharing snippets of your performances or artwork. Regularly engaging with followers, responding to comments, and utilising hashtags will enhance your visibility. Network within the industry Connections are critical in the arts industry. Attend local events and festivals to meet other artists, promoters, and venue owners. Don't hesitate to introduce yourself and share your passion for your craft. Building relationships can lead to referrals and recommendations, significantly increasing your chances of getting booked. Perfect your pitch Your pitch to venues and promoters needs to be concise and compelling. Tailor your communication to reflect an understanding of their specific needs and how you fit into their programming. Include links to your music or performances, highlight your previous experience and offer clear reasons why booking you would be an advantageous decision for them. Create a press kit A professional press kit is essential when approaching venues and promoters. Include a biography, high-resolution images, music samples or performance reels and any notable press coverage. This serves as a snapshot of your artistic identity and provides everything a potential booker might need to make their decision. Follow up After reaching out to venues or contacts, don't forget to follow up. A polite email or a WhatsApp message can remind them of your initial contact and your continued interest. This shows professionalism and enthusiasm, traits that can help keep you top of mind for future opportunities.
