Durban is ready to roll out the red carpet for visitors as the city co-hosts the 129th edition of the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
These are the words of eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, who expressed his excitement during the launch of festivities at Weston Square and The Barn, the city's newly developed lifestyle and retail hub touted as the region's "Midrand", strategically situated between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse will be the epicentre of this prestigious horse racing event taking place on Saturday, drawing close to 45 000 local and international visitors.
This influx is expected to result in a significant boost for the local economy, with hotel occupancy anticipated to reach 80% over the event weekend.
Xaba addressed local media and dignitaries, including the Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning, Thembo Ntuli, and marketing leaders from Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle Racing.
He enthusiastically declared, 'Whether you are a horse racing enthusiast or fashionista, the Durban July is an event you cannot miss. It remains the greatest horseracing event on the continent.'
In a bid to enrich the experience for visitors, the city has orchestrated a variety of events and entertainment options beyond the Greyville Racecourse, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Some visitors have already arrived, and local businesses are beginning to prepare their marquees in anticipation of the festivities.
The mayor expressed confidence in the event's success, highlighting the collaborative effort with Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle Racing to deliver a stunning spectacle.
'This event presents another opportunity for Durban to demonstrate that it continues to be a premier destination for events, sports, and entertainment,' he noted, underlining the city's commitment to showcasing itself as a major player on the global stage.
Xaba emphasised the city's ongoing efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience and maintain a safe environment for all attendees.
'Our law enforcement agencies have developed an integrated safety plan, supported by the private security industry. Therefore, visitors are guaranteed a safe stay in the city with high police visibility,' he stated.
Durban has faced numerous challenges in the past, including the July 2021 unrest, the floods in April 2022, the Covid pandemic and not participating in Blue Flag beach status ratings in 2023, resulting in tourism being impacted.
'As part of reviving tourism in the city, I will be meeting key role players in the tourism industry, including the hospitality sector, so that together we can develop a common programme for enhancing visitors' experiences in the city.
"This will also assist us in gaining insight into their future development plans and ensure that we are aligned,' he said.
With a focused plan for growth and revitalisation, all eyes are glued on the city as Durban stands ready to welcome thousands to the glittering festivities of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, marking a new chapter in its journey towards rejuvenating the tourism sector.

According to eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, the city is set to reap major economic benefits, including a boost of over R700 million to Durban's GDP and the creation of more than 4,000 jobs. Speaking at a media event and fan meet-and-greet at Sibaya Casino Durban on Friday, Owen, who is also Sunbet ambassador, shared his insights ahead of the big race. "Eight on 18 is the favourite, isn't it? That sounds like everybody's keen on it. I actually like the look of the number one horse, Oriental Charm. Charm won it last year and is drawn well — an older, more robust horse compared to the young pretender,' Owen said. It excites the nation. Lots of people will be there, the racing is great,' he said. While Owen made his name as a footballer, his passion for horse racing runs deep. At age 22, he founded Manor House Stables in Cheshire, which today manages over 130 horses and has produced numerous international champions. "It's not really been a transition for me because racing has always been my passion outside football. I set up Manor House Stables when I was 22, and now we're training about 130 horses,' he explained. The football legend will be experiencing the event atmosphere for the first time and looks forward to the social and cultural aspects of the event. 'There'll be the fashion and the people and the excitement and the social environment. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great,' he said. The ex-Liverpool striker is eager to immerse himself in South Africa's most anticipated horse-racing event, although he admits he still hasn't decided what to wear for the occasion. "Independent Media Lifestyle" caught up with the charismatic SunBet ambassador at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where he expressed his excitement about experiencing the annual racing spectacle that draws attention from across the region. "The first thing I've noticed about the city is that it's very similar to the UK in terms of lots of greenery, trees and land, it was nice to see. We've come in winter so it's a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be, I only brought one top!" Despite the chill, Owen's enthusiasm was unmistakable, especially as he looked forward to the main event. "I'm looking forward to more of the city, and the Durban July is going to be the biggest attraction for me, so I can't wait to see that tomorrow as well." "We've already been to various places. "I'm not really a fashionista, I'm looking forward to the whole day. I love horses and I'm looking forward to seeing the big race, but I like to see everything, and see people enjoying themselves, I may possibly get down with the locals. "That's the good thing about horse racing, there is something in it for everybody, whether you're into fashion or horses, competition or gambling. It's a family event so I'm looking forward to the whole day." His insights into the racing field are great, especially as he brings his perspective from a recent stint at the prestigious Royal Ascot in the UK. "I listened intensely last night, and Eight On Eighteen is the favourite, sounds like everybody is keen on it. I actually like the look of the No.1 horse, Oriental Charm, who won it last year, drawn well, it's an older horse so more robust, I guess, but I'm guessing." "I'm interested in seeing what the differences are. I've just come off the back of doing five days of Royal Ascot, which is our showpiece in the UK. We've got a lot of festivals, but I think Royal Ascot is the one we're most proud of and I'm told that the Durban July is the big one over here that excites the nation. Hollywoodbets Durban July: meet the first black horse racing announcer in isiZulu on TV
When it comes to South Africa's black pioneers, the name Sanele Mchunu now stands alongside the greats from Comrades Marathon champion Sam Tshabalala, to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, and music star Khaya Mthethwa. Hailing from Mpophomeni in Howick, Mchunu has carved out his own place in history as the first black person to announce horse races in isiZulu on national television. The 41-year-old, who now lives in KwaNyuswa near Pinetown, was hired by Race Coast and on Saturday July 5 takes to the mic at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July, a moment that marks both personal triumph and a step forward for representation in the horse racing industry. Speaking to Isolezwe, Mchunu reflected on the opportunity that came his way in 2023, when Hollywoodbets sought to revitalise horse racing by making it more accessible to a broader audience. 'I was challenged to announce the races in isiZulu something I'd never even dreamed of,' he said. 'But I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.' Since then, Mchunu has become a regular voice in the sport and hopes his role will open doors for others. 'Even after Smanga Khumalo's historic Durban July win, there's still only one Black horse trainer in the country,' he said. 'This is an industry with huge employment potential, and it's time more Black South Africans got involved - not just at major events like the Durban July, but throughout the year.' Mchunu's journey began in the classrooms of KwaMqhathi Primary in KwaMpande, before moving to KwaNyuswa's St Lawrence Primary and later completing matric at Khabazela High School in Embo. He went on to study Video Technology at what is now the Durban University of Technology. His professional media career began in 2006 as a video editor at the SABC, followed by stints at SuperSport TV and, eventually, Gallop TV under where he now works as a studio producer. While he hasn't yet married, Mchunu is a proud father of three and continues to make strides, not only for himself, but for the next generation of broadcasters, sports enthusiasts, and horse racing professionals.
