PM Anwar calls for revival of reading culture to uplift the nation
He said without a commitment to lifelong learning through reading, the country cannot hope to compete globally or improve its command of language, knowledge and technology.
'We have inherited a proud and remarkable civilisation. It is our generation's responsibility to pursue knowledge diligently as well as shape values, character and integrity, to elevate the dignity of our people and our nation,' he said.
Speaking at the opening of the Malaysia MADANI Nationalism Seminar, themed 'Teachers as Catalysts of Patriotism', Anwar said reviving a reading culture is essential to producing well-informed, morally grounded citizens, a goal that requires unity, collective effort and a shared commitment to justice.
He noted that simply distributing books is no longer enough to foster interest among younger Malaysians, who are increasingly drawn to social media.
'This is not a new problem,' he said, citing an American social critic, Allan Bloom, who warned as early as the 1980s, in his book 'The Closing of the American Mind', that interest in reading was already in decline.
Anwar said that national pride should not be measured solely through material development, but also through enduring human values.
'We may achieve progress, but without a sense of humanity, it is incomplete,' he said.
More than 1,000 educators attended the seminar, including retired teachers, teaching professionals from Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, as well as teacher trainees from the Teacher Education Institutes.
Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) director-general Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin and Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud.

Anwar to meet Sabah PKR leaders during visit
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be meeting with Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat leaders during his one-day visit here. Anwar, who arrived at the state capital past midnight, will be at a hotel here by 11am for the politics agenda. Anwar is expected to keep tabs with the Sabah Pakatan Harapan's preparation towards facing the upcoming state election. During his visit to Tawau in May, Anwar had said he hoped that Sabah's new government would be made up of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)- PH- Barisan Nasional(BN) that is aligned with the unity government. However, he had also given assurance to GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor that he could lead in the discussions with BN. Hajiji had announced last week that GRS would work with PH for the state election but the local-based coalition must dominate most of the 73-state seats. Yesterday, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said BN intended to contest at least one state seat in 25 parliamentary seats in Sabah. Sabah PKR chief Datuk Mustapha Sakmud had also said that PH eyed for 25 or 26 seats. Currently, GRS has 38 state seats; Umno 11 and PH 7. Prior to the political meeting, Anwar will also close the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day at Sabah International Convention centre here at 9am.

Our commodities remain competitive even with tariffs, says Johari
JOHOR BARU: The United States' 19% tariff on Malaysian imports will not affect the competitiveness of the country's commodities in global markets, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (pic). The Plantation and Commodities Minister said this was because the tariff for Malaysia remains competitive compared to other Asean nations, including Indonesia, which also faces the same rate. 'The 19% tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries, and even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate. 'In the context of palm oil, Indonesia is the largest producer and we are number two. But Indonesia is also subject to 19% like Malaysia, so there is no problem,' he told reporters after the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual general meeting here. On Aug 1, US President Donald Trump announced the 19% tariff for Malaysian goods entering the United States, down from an earlier rate of 25%. The new tariff structure takes effect in seven days and applies to all goods with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Besides Indonesia and Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia have also been slapped with a 19% tariff. On an unrelated matter, Johari, who is also Umno vice-president, said the party needs to adopt a more progressive and inclusive mindset to stay relevant, particularly in reaching out to younger Malaysians. He said youth engagement must be prioritised, since young voters are expected to make up 40% of the electorate across parliamentary constituencies in the 16th General Election (GE16). 'This is not a small number. Their thinking is different. Many are highly educated, with degrees, Master's and even PhDs. 'They evaluate candidates based on substance, not just party loyalty. 'To win the hearts of this group, we must think differently, act differently, and truly listen to what they want,' he said. He added that the party must be willing to embrace reform and create space for new ideas, including those brought forward by younger members.

Malaysia to modernise pondok schools with AI and tech, says PM Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will revitalise Malaysia's traditional Islamic boarding schools, known as pondok, by integrating advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to align them with contemporary educational needs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that these institutions must continue safeguarding the faith, morals, and identity of the Muslim community. Speaking at the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), Anwar highlighted a collaboration between the Finance Ministry and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to upgrade dilapidated religious schools. 'We aim to incorporate IT, digitalisation, and AI to ensure these institutions remain resilient in nurturing the Ummah's values,' he said. Historically, pondok schools resisted colonial influence, preserving Islamic teachings when other systems faltered. Anwar stressed their enduring role in national identity. The event was attended by Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. In a related initiative, Anwar will launch the Mushaf Ummah Program on August 8, distributing Qurans translated into 30 languages globally. 'During my visits to Peru, Brazil, France, and Cambodia, I've distributed Qurans in local languages to promote Islamic teachings,' he shared. The 65th MTHQA, themed 'Developing a MADANI Ummah,' runs until August 9, featuring 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia's representatives include Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan (Perak) and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi (Terengganu) in the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini (Perak) and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif (Kelantan) compete in Memorisation.
