‘So proud…': Former UK minister praises his nephews, speaking up for their jailed father Imran Khan
In a note on X, Goldsmith, while advocating for Imran Khan himself, sang high praises of his nephews, feeling 'proud' of them. While quoting a post by Mario Nawfal, an Australian entrepreneur, Goldsmith said, 'So proud of my nephews. They have never courted publicity. The contrary. But they are speaking up now for their father @ImranKhanPTI - a hero for so many in Pakistan, an uncorruptible leader who is being tortured by a desperate, corrupt and greedy establishment.'
Nawfal's account has been withheld in India due to the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
The 72-year-old has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi, the garrison city, since mid-2023 in connection with multiple cases.
Imran Khan's sons Kasim Khan and Suleiman Khan, in an interview with Nawfal, urged US President Donald Trump and the international community to help free their jailed father.
According to a report published in Arab News, Kasim Khan and Suleiman Khan spoke about the 'suppression of democracy' in Pakistan, and a lack of basic facilities for their father in his prison cell. They said he was being kept on 'trumped up charges,' and called on the Trump administration and the international community to press Islamabad for his release.
'Anyone who looks into it a little can kind of see that,' Suleiman said. 'In terms of a message to the Trump administration, we'd call for any government that supports free speech and proper democracy to join the call for our father's release, and especially the most powerful leader in the world," the report quoted Suleiman as saying.
Imran Khan's older son Kasim Khan said they just wanted the international community to see what had been going on in Pakistan and 'hopefully take action.'
On May 9, Imran Khan's party had filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking his release from jail, claiming a threat to his life due to the impact of the prolonged detention on his health and in view of the escalating military conflict with India, news agency PTI reported.
Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, in a WhatsApp message, said that the party's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur approached the Islamabad High Court for the release of the party founder.
'The Islamabad High Court has been approached for the release of Imran Khan. An application has been filed by Chief Minister KP Ali Amin,' a PTI report quoted the party.
'It has been requested that in view of the current war situation with India, for national harmony and solidarity, and due to the fear of a drone attack in Adiala Jail, he be immediately released on parole/probation."

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The Congress on Monday condoled the passing away of former Kerala chief minister and veteran CPI(M) leader V S Achuthanandan, with Rahul Gandhi hailing him as a champion of the poor and the marginalised who upheld the values of principled politics through bold decisions. Achuthanandan, one of India's most respected Communist figures and a key presence in Kerala's political history, died on Monday at the age of 101. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said ideological differences aside, Achuthanandan's steadfast commitment to his principles earned him respect as a crusader for democracy. 'My deepest condolences on the passing of former Kerala Chief Minister Comrade V S Achuthanandan, who spent decades in public life," Kharge said in a post on X. 'His contribution to Kerala and to the nation will be respected and remembered for years to come," she said. The veteran leader died at 3:20 pm while undergoing treatment in the critical care unit of the Pattom SUT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, according to an official bulletin issued by the hospital. Achuthanandan was receiving treatment since June 23, following a cardiac arrest. A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Achuthanandan was a lifelong champion of workers' rights, land reforms and social justice. He served as Kerala's chief minister from 2006 to 2011 and was elected to the state Assembly seven times, serving three terms as the leader of opposition. Punjab CM Mann emphasises stronger ties with UK in key sectors
Chandigarh, Jul 21 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday emphasised the need for stronger ties with the United Kingdom in key sectors such as textile, horticulture, education, light engineering, sports, bicycle manufacturing and defence. During a meeting with British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett at his official residence here, the chief minister highlighted the age-old relationship between Punjab and the UK, noting the significant contributions of the Punjabi diaspora to the UK's economy. He also underscored the importance of developing more ambitious and comprehensive agreements, particularly in the aforementioned sectors. In a statement, Mann advocated for the establishment of a structured communication mechanism between the governments of Punjab and the UK. Mann said such a framework would facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise, thereby promoting growth and prosperity on both sides. There is tremendous potential for collaboration between Punjab and the UK, particularly in the sectors of mutual importance, Mann said. Raising a pressing concern, Mann drew attention to the exploitation of young people by unscrupulous visa agents who take advantage of their aspirations. He pointed out that these agents often make false promises and employ illegal methods, leading to severe financial and emotional losses for the families of the visa aspirants. Mann also sought the British High Commission's help to check this problem effectively by formulating a joint strategy, especially by making people aware about the correct visa channels. Rowett praised the Punjab government for its firm stance against drug abuse and expressed optimism that the upcoming free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UK will prove beneficial for both Punjab and the UK, an official statement said. She also said the British High Commission's 'Visa Fraud Ton Bacho' campaign and its WhatsApp chatbot provide reliable information on safe and legal pathways to the UK, adding that the Punjab government and the UK can further motivate the people to have direct access to accurate guidance for visa related information. India-US trade deal: American officials to visit New Delhi in August for sixth round of talks
A team of US trade officials will visit India in August for the next round of talks for the proposed bilateral trade pact between the two nations, reported news agency PTI. "For the next round of talks, the US team will visit India in the second half of August," a PTIreport said, quoting an official. Last week, India and the US officials concluded the fifth round of trade talks in Washington. Rajesh Agrawal, India's chief negotiator and special secretary in the Department of Commerce, and Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, held the deliberations. In the fifth round of talks, issues related to agriculture and automobiles are learnt to have figured, reported PTI. Matters related to ways to deal with non-market economies, and SCOMET (Special Chemicals, Organisms, Materials, Equipment, and Technologies) also came up for discussion. New Delhi and Washington are looking at finalising an interim trade deal before August 1 deadline, which marks the end of the suspension period of Trump tariffs. The Trump administration has imposed 26 per cent tariffs on India. On April 2 this year, President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on the US trading partners. According to the report, New Delhi is seeking the removal of this additional tariff of 26 per cent. It is also seeking the easing of tariffs on steel and aluminium (50 per cent) and the auto sector (25 per cent). Certain farmers' associations have urged the government not to include any issues related to agriculture in the trade pact. India is also seeking duty concessions for labour-intensive sectors, such as textiles, gems and jewellery, leather goods, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oil seeds, grapes, and bananas, in the proposed trade pact. On the other hand, the US wants duty concessions on certain industrial goods, automobiles, especially electric vehicles, wines, petrochemical products, agri goods, dairy items, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. In the April-June quarter of this fiscal year, India's merchandise exports to the US rose 22.8 per cent to $25.51 billion, while imports surged 11.68 per cent to $12.86 billion.
