Teammate set to be axed as Manly plan to backflip on Tom Trbojevic switch

Yahoo6 days ago

Tom Trbojevic admits he's 'disappointed' to be shifted out of fullback at Manly, but insists he is happy to do what's best for the team. Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold has made a number of changes for Friday night's home game against the Wests Tigers, with winger Jason Saab axed as part of a new-look lineup.
Young gun Lehi Hopoate is set to wear the No.1 jersey that Turbo has had a mortgage on for years, with the shift to centre pushing Reuben Garrick back onto the wing at the expense of Saab, who's paid the price for some inconsistent form. Seibold is under pressure after two consecutive losses that's seen a Manly side tipped to contend for the top-four earlier in the season, fall further out of the eight.
Hopoate has been a revelation at fullback when filling in for Trbojevic, who has had another injury-plagued season for the Sea Eagles. Even when the Manly superstar has featured, he's looked nowhere near his best and the dynamic running game that has so often terrorised defences has been sadly lacking.
Following reports of crisis meetings at the club and one-on-one player reviews with the squad, Seibold has decided to shuffle the deck in the hopes of snapping their current form slump. And Turbo concedes it's difficult being moved out of his favourite position, but will happily do whatever the coach feels is best for the team.
"I'd be lying to say it wasn't disappointing to hear that ... I've played fullback for a long time at this club and I love playing that position but for now I've come to terms with it," he told Nine's 100% Footy on Monday night. "I completely get where the decision's coming from, having someone like Lehi (Hopoate) there who's playing exceptional footy this year so I completely understand and I'm really excited for the opportunity to play centre this week."

Turbo has excelled at centre for the Blues at State of Origin level and was close to Australia's best playing there for the Kangaroos in last year's Pacific Championships triumph. He concedes the move is based around reducing his workload from fullback in the hopes of keeping him on the park more often. But Manly CEO Tony Mestrov suggested the shift to a 'roaming role' at centre was not a long-term move for Turbo.
"We're just trying to get some hands on the ball for Tom and change it up a bit," Mestrov told AAP. "The idea is we just want him to regain his confidence and start playing again. There is no doubt he is one of the best fullbacks in the world and we will see him go back there.
"They say a change is as a good as a holiday. I think it's just to enact him, everyone knows what he can do. I'm pretty excited to see what he can do (at centre) ... We've seen what he has done for Australia and NSW and what he can do. He will have the same roaming role."
Seibold's shake-up at Manly came off the back of the club's poor form and in the wake of growing fan discontent. The Manly coach reportedly held seven-minute meetings with each player of the squad and while the brutally honest sessions didn't go down well with everyone, Turbo suggested it was the kick up the back-side the team needed.
"I think after any honesty session like that there's going to be people not feeling too great about themselves, I'm included in that," Trbojevic said. "Some things you hear from a coach you don't love hearing but you need to hear them. I think everyone's come to terms with what they've been told and now that's about going and actioning it, that's what you need to do."

Three axed as Slater makes staggering call to bring Origin hero out of retirement

Billy Slater has sensationally axed three players from his Queensland squad for State of Origin 3, naming Reece Walsh as 18th man and bringing Josh Papalii out of rep retirement. Mo Fotuaika, Corey Horsburgh and Ezra Mam have all been dumped from the 20-player squad that Slater named for Game 2, with Fotuaika axed from the playing 17. Slater has made the staggering call to bring Canberra veteran Papalii out of rep retirement, after he called it quits on his Origin career back in 2023. Papalii will start in the front-row in place of the axed Fotuaika, who's been underwhelming in the series so far. Papalii's selection is another snub for Raiders teammate Horbsurgh, who many believe should have been picked in the first two games. But he's not even in the 20-player squad for the series decider, with Slater naming Walsh, Josh Kerr and J'maine Hopgood as his reserves. RELATED: Isaiyah Katoa handed State of Origin honour as NSW name squad Jeff Fenech speaks out amid daughter's big news with NRL star Walsh has missed out on the starting fullback role, with Slater switching Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to No.1 to replace the injured Kalyn Ponga. Broncos centre Gehamat Shibasaki will make his Origin debut in a shuffled backline. Walsh being named at 18th man means there's no spot for Broncos teammate and good friend Mam, who filled the role in Game 2. It's a curious selection from Slater considering Walsh still looks hampered by a knee injury, and Mam arguably covers more positions in the all-important 18th man role. But the selection of Papalii is the biggest bombshell, considering the 33-year-old hasn't played Origin footy since 2022. The veteran prop has been in sensational form for Canberra over the last few weeks, but Raiders teammate Horsburgh will no doubt be questioning what more he needs to do. Speaking last week on SEN radio, Matty Johns said it would be a 'masterstroke' if Slater picks Papalii to beef up his forward pack. "I think it would be a fantastic move for Queensland," Johns said. "To come down to Sydney for a decider and to bring someone with the presence of 'Big Papa' and his leadership, I think it would be a masterstroke." Injured Maroons veteran Ben Hunt said on 4BC radio: 'I would love to see big Paps out there. There was never a time when he pulled on the jumper that he let Queensland down and he is playing great footy at the moment. He is the ultimate warrior. He would bring some real aggression up front if we brought him back in.' Queensland legend Corey Parker has no doubt Papalii will aim up for Slater. "I pencilled him in my team for Origin 2 but then I thought, well, he's retired, so they won't pick him,' Parker said on SEN. 'Absolutely he can do a job. He's probably playing as good a footy now as he ever has. He just seems comfortable. He'd be fine playing Origin. He plays week in, week out at NRL level and I understand Origin is quicker, but he's only looking to do 25 minutes at most. 'He'd bring a bit of intimidation. There's no bulls*** with Papa and he would get stuck into the Blues. I've played against him and it's never fun playing against Papa." Isaiya Katoa handed State of Origin honour as NSW get good news on injury front

Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa will reportedly be named in the extended squad for NSW for State of Origin 3 on Sunday night, a huge reward for his brilliant form in 2025. The is reporting that Katoa will be part of Laurie Daley's 20-player squad when it's named later on Sunday. The 21-year-old is little chance to play in the decider unless there's a late injury disaster, but Daley is said to be keen on getting him into camp and the Origin environment with an eye to the future. Katoa is viewed as Nathan Cleary's halfback successor for NSW, and could have a long career in the sky blue jersey. The youngster had another stellar game on Saturday night as the Dolphins thrashed the Rabbitohs 50-28, laying on three try assists and having a hand in everything. He's shown he wouldn't be overawed if called upon to play Origin in the near future. And while he's a Blue in waiting, he recently admitted he's spent plenty if time watching video of Queensland's greatest spine combinations. The Dolphins have cracked 50 points in three of their last four games, as well as a 44-8 hiding of the ladder-leading Bulldogs. "We have a spine meeting where our nine, six, seven and one come together," Katoa said after his man-of-the-match display against the Dragons in Round 14. "Some of the clips we look at are Cameron Smith, JT (Johnathan Thurston), Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater all connecting (for the Maroons). "The more they connected the more success their team had. We are trying to build that into our own games and still try to play to our individual strengths. It is a work in progress for us." Meanwhile, Jarome Luai has been cleared to take his place in the halves alongside Cleary for Game 3 in Sydney. Luai was ruled out of the Wests Tigers' loss to Manly on Friday night after a boil on his chest became infected. It required a stint in hospital, but he's no chance of missing the Origin decider. The Blues are reportedly happy to bring Luai into camp even if he's not ready to train, and would be fine with him not taking to the field in their first session on Wednesday. Tigers coach Benji Marshall painted an optimistic picture over Luai's health on Friday night, believing he could have played if the game was later in the weekend. "I am pretty sure he will be OK for NSW if they pick him," Marshall said. "He got an infection yesterday and didn't come to training. He said he was going to be all right to play. And then he went to hospital and had fevers and the infection got a lot worse. If it was another 24 or 48 hours Jarome would have been right to play. But he wasn't good for today." For the Maroons, Valentine Holmes has been cleared of injury and will be available for the decider, despite picking up a cork to the leg in the Dragons' win on Saturday night. He didn't take the last two shots at goal, sending a scare through Billy Slater and Queensland officials.

NRL fans all say same thing as Reece Walsh suffers massive State of Origin blow

Reece Walsh suffered a Hammer blow on Saturday night as Hamiso-Tabuai Fidow scored four tries for the Dolphins and declared he wants to wear the No.1 jersey for Queensland in State of Origin 3. Maroons coach Billy Slater faces a tricky decision for the decider, with Kalyn Ponga ruled out with a foot injury. Walsh was Queensland fullback in 2023 and 2024, but many have called for Tabuai-Fidow to be given the nod to replace Ponga. Slater has the option of shifting Tabuai-Fidow to the back and bringing in a new winger - most likely Murray Taulagi from the Cowboys. In his final audition for the Origin role on Saturday, Walsh would have impressed Slater with a try assist, four tackle-breaks and 126 running metres in the Broncos' win over the Warriors. But Tabuai-Fidow blew him out of the water with a stunning four-try masterpiece as the Dolphins thrashed South Sydney. The Hammer had a whopping 22 runs for 263 metres, breaking seven tackles and crossing the line four times. Many believe he's Queensland's best fullback option (even when Ponga is fit) and he made himself the No.1 option with his performance on Saturday night. Tabuai-Fidow has scored 11 tries in nine games for Queensland, but has only ever played centre or wing in State of Origin. He was brilliant in Game 1 of last year's series when he moved to fullback after Walsh was concussed. Speaking after Saturday night's game, the Hammer declared he wants the No.1 jersey for Origin 3. "To have that No.1 on my back, would be super special for me," he said. "You think about the players that have worn that No.1 jersey (before me) and given it all. It's a bit of chop and change (after playing centre and wing already this series) but I'm comfortable with it. It's my preferred (position) and a good opportunity for me after playing fullback at club-land week in, week out." Walsh is hoping to add to his five State of Origin appearances for Queensland, and got the backing of his Broncos teammates and coach on Saturday. The 22-year-old is still sporting some heavy strapping on his knee after a six-week layoff recently, but Pat Carrigan reckons he's all good. "His knee looked good, he's done the work, ready to go and there's an opportunity," Carrigan said. "He's growing. He's still only 22 or whatever but he's playing tough for us and we're really appreciating what he's doing. He does what he does and they try to nail him every week so I know he'll be up for it." Broncos and NSW player Payne Haas said: "One hundred per cent (Walsh should be picked). He can do a job for them and he should be there." RELATED: Cobbo twist as Dolphins player makes immediate move to Roosters Stunning development for Billy Slater and family before Origin 3 While Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds declared: "I'm a Blue next Wednesday but I'd love to see him in that arena. He belongs in that arena. It certainly would give the Blues a few headaches and things to think about." On social media, fans weren't as convinced about Walsh. The general consensus is Tabuai-Fidow might get the nod, and a poll of over 12,000 Yahoo readers has the Hammer as the overwhelming preferred option. Just as Walsh got the jersey, Hammer just snatched it off him.
