NRL fans all say same thing as Reece Walsh suffers massive State of Origin blow

Yahoo14 hours ago

Reece Walsh suffered a Hammer blow on Saturday night as Hamiso-Tabuai Fidow scored four tries for the Dolphins and declared he wants to wear the No.1 jersey for Queensland in State of Origin 3. Maroons coach Billy Slater faces a tricky decision for the decider, with Kalyn Ponga ruled out with a foot injury.
Walsh was Queensland fullback in 2023 and 2024, but many have called for Tabuai-Fidow to be given the nod to replace Ponga. Slater has the option of shifting Tabuai-Fidow to the back and bringing in a new winger - most likely Murray Taulagi from the Cowboys.
In his final audition for the Origin role on Saturday, Walsh would have impressed Slater with a try assist, four tackle-breaks and 126 running metres in the Broncos' win over the Warriors. But Tabuai-Fidow blew him out of the water with a stunning four-try masterpiece as the Dolphins thrashed South Sydney.
The Hammer had a whopping 22 runs for 263 metres, breaking seven tackles and crossing the line four times. Many believe he's Queensland's best fullback option (even when Ponga is fit) and he made himself the No.1 option with his performance on Saturday night.
Tabuai-Fidow has scored 11 tries in nine games for Queensland, but has only ever played centre or wing in State of Origin. He was brilliant in Game 1 of last year's series when he moved to fullback after Walsh was concussed.
Speaking after Saturday night's game, the Hammer declared he wants the No.1 jersey for Origin 3. "To have that No.1 on my back, would be super special for me," he said.
"You think about the players that have worn that No.1 jersey (before me) and given it all. It's a bit of chop and change (after playing centre and wing already this series) but I'm comfortable with it. It's my preferred (position) and a good opportunity for me after playing fullback at club-land week in, week out."
Walsh is hoping to add to his five State of Origin appearances for Queensland, and got the backing of his Broncos teammates and coach on Saturday. The 22-year-old is still sporting some heavy strapping on his knee after a six-week layoff recently, but Pat Carrigan reckons he's all good.
"His knee looked good, he's done the work, ready to go and there's an opportunity," Carrigan said. "He's growing. He's still only 22 or whatever but he's playing tough for us and we're really appreciating what he's doing. He does what he does and they try to nail him every week so I know he'll be up for it."
Broncos and NSW player Payne Haas said: "One hundred per cent (Walsh should be picked). He can do a job for them and he should be there."

While Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds declared: "I'm a Blue next Wednesday but I'd love to see him in that arena. He belongs in that arena. It certainly would give the Blues a few headaches and things to think about."
On social media, fans weren't as convinced about Walsh. The general consensus is Tabuai-Fidow might get the nod, and a poll of over 12,000 Yahoo readers has the Hammer as the overwhelming preferred option.
Just as Walsh got the jersey, Hammer just snatched it off him. Taulagi will be the decider

Yep!!! I think in terms of an actual fullback Walsh makes more sense. But for the overall team maybe Murray / Hammer. I wouldn't be mad either way

Don't know how funny that gag is – Sione Tuipulotu laughs off ‘Aussie' dig

Sione Tuipulotu insists the British and Irish Lions must continue to shrug off any provocation during their tour of Australia after their overseas-born contingent were attacked by the Tannoy announcer at Optus Stadium. Tuipulotu, one of eight players in Andy Farrell's squad who were born, raised and educated in the southern hemisphere, was among those caught in the crosshairs before Saturday's 54-7 rout of Western Force. Advertisement 'Another Aussie at number 12, Sione Tuipulotu,' was how the Scotland centre was introduced when the team was read out for the Lions' opening match on Australian soil. Sione Tuipulotu made his presence felt against Western Force (Trevor Collens/AP) Mack Hansen, James Lowe and Pierre Schoeman were also referenced by the nation of their birth rather than their adopted country, for whom they have qualified either through residency or family heritage. It continued a theme from the hosts that began when Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt described Tuipulotu and New Zealand-born Ireland international Bundee Aki as a 'southern-hemisphere centre partnership' in the build-up to the defeat by Argentina in Dublin. Advertisement Tuipulotu emphasised the words 'good humour' when brushing aside the jibes that he expected on his return Down Under. 'I knew there would be some 'good humour' coming back home to Australia. These are all things we've got to take in our stride,' he said. 'To not announce the elephant in the room, I am from Australia. I was born here. I don't know how funny that gag is to everyone! Scotland's Sione Tuipulotu, left, and head coach Gregor Townsend celebrate after November's win over Australia (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'I'm loving my rugby playing for the Lions and I'm really passionate about it. Andy's brought the group together so well.' The victory in Perth exposed several shortcomings such as a high penalty count and creaking set-piece, but there was also much to admire in the attacking exuberance that produced eight classy tries. Advertisement Tougher tests than the Force await on tour but combined with the evidence gathered from the Aviva Stadium eight days earlier, Farrell's Lions are clearly keen to keep the ball alive – and on this occasion the passes stuck. Finn Russell was at the heart of onslaught in his first outing of the tour and the Scot's instinctive play drew approval from Farrell, who declared: 'He's ready to go. And that's good.' Tuipulotu, who expects to be firing by the Test series as he continues his comeback from a significant ankle injury, said: 'We're taking ideas from all the nations. 'Obviously, the coaching style is very Ireland dominant and there are a lot of ideas that we're getting from the Irish coaches, but then those ideas are being sprinkled on. Advertisement 'When Finn comes in, he plays his style. He plays to the structure of the team, but he's a very instinctive player and he wants to play what's directly in front of his face. 'There's a mixture there and that's what's going to make it hard to defend for opposition teams. 'They're not necessarily defending a structure of play, they're defending a structure of play with really supreme individuals conducting it like Finn. 'Finn's a world-class number 10 and he's been here, been there, done that. He's come off a really good season after winning the Premiership with Bath and I thought him and Tomos Williams controlled the game really well. 'We're still growing, there's a lot of growth left in us but the identity at least, you could see how we try to play the game out there.'

Tyreek Hill ready to 'change the narrative' surrounding Dolphins

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, star Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill said it's time for Miami to change the storylines that surround the franchise. During a recent appearance on the "Glory Daze" podcast with Johnny Manziel from the Fanatics Fest in NYC, Hill commented on the urgency he feels heading into 2025. "This year as one of the leaders, I told the guys, it's time to change who we are as a team. It's time to change the narrative about we are not able to play in cold weather, we are not a physical team. So, I'm tired of that narrative. I'm tired of living behind not being able to go to the playoffs and win in Miami, because we got a damn good team. "We got a good quarterback, we got a good offensive lineman and we got some good coaches and we got some good people in the community who deserve to be a part of that. So, I feel like this is the year that we change all of that," Hill said. Trade talks have encompassed Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey's offseason. During his podcast appearance with Manziel, Hill discussed how he was gearing up to put the "full court press" on recruiting Ramsey back to South Beach. Hill knows that Ramsey remaining with the Dolphins puts Miami in the best position to accomplish some of the team goals that Hill was talking about alongside Manziel. But, it's also because Hill doesn't want Ramsey to miss out on that moment when postseason success does happen for Miami. "I'm really hoping that we sign Jalen Ramsey back, because he's a great leader on the defensive side of the ball. And just being able to do something special in Miami and win a playoff game after 25 years, I think that's something that he doesn't want to miss out on. "We got to get to that. That's something that I talk to my Mom about every day. I take pride in that. Being one of the leaders on this team, I not only want to do it for myself, man, but I want to do it for the fans. I want to do it for the community of Miami, because it's special to me. I don't know, man. It's just something different about me. I just feel different. I just feel like if I don't do it, I'm basically just collecting a check, and I don't want to feel like that," Hill said. At times throughout the first two seasons of Mike McDaniel's run in Miami, it felt and looked like the Dolphins were primed to turn the postseason corner. But, Miami stumbled through a five-game losing streak late in the 2022 season. And then the Dolphins were without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in a 34-31 AFC Wild Card loss at Buffalo as Tagovailoa missed the final two games of the season with a second concussion. In 2023, the Dolphins raced out to a 5-1 record and put up 70 points in a Week 3 win over Denver. The Dolphins were 11-4 before dropping their final two regular season games at Baltimore and versus Buffalo. Miami's loss at Baltimore was a laugher, 56-19. Then, at a frosty Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Miami suffered a 26-7 loss against the Chiefs in the AFC Wild Card round once more. At the time, it was the Dolphins' 11th straight loss when game-time temps were 40 degrees or less. In 2024, Tagovailoa's injury absences dug the Dolphins too deep a hole to climb out of as Miami finished 8-9. Now, with 2025 training camp nearing, Hill seems locked back in to steering the Dolphins to a place they haven't been in 25 years.

Josh Thewlis on his spectacular try, gaining confidence and key defensive play

Josh Thewlis touches down for the opening try against Hull FC after breaking from deep inside his own half (Image: Paul Currie/ WARRINGTON Wolves needed a good start against Hull FC, and Josh Thewlis provided it in spectacular fashion. With The Wire tasked with coming off their own line early in the game, the winger – back in his regular position after two games at full-back – burst through the Black and Whites defence and streaked home from almost the full length of the field. Advertisement From there, his side never looked back and secured a victory that keeps them alive in the play-off race, when defeat would have all but ended their hopes. 'It was just a yardage carry, I got my nose through and away I went,' the older Thewlis brother told the Warrington Guardian post-match as he completed another game alongside younger sibling Jake, who was on the opposite wing. 'We've been working hard lately and sticking to process and it showed today. 'It was a pretty easy switch – we do two or three training sessions a week so it was just picking up my job again. I spoke to Sam (Burgess) and it's a case of wherever the team needs me. Advertisement 'It was good going back to full-back – you see the game a lot differently – but it's good to be back on the right edge and building some connections with Rod (Tai) and George (Williams).' On the victory, he added: 'We did need it. Closing that gap between us and the six is definitely something we spoke about this week. 'It was either going to be seven points after today or three, and we've made it three so we're back in touch. Hopefully we can charge now for the rest of the season. 'It's been tough recently – we've been putting a lot of effort into games without coming away with points and wins. 'The players have been frustrated more than anyone – I get fans are frustrated as well – but it's good to see us get the benefits out of our hard work. Advertisement 'I think we can gain a lot of confidence from that.' Thewlis the younger joined his brother on the scoresheet shortly afterwards as Warrington struck out into a 12-0 lead, but a nervy second half appeared to be in store after the visitors narrowed the gap to two points with a surge late in the opening period. However, The Wire nailed their start again after the break and back-to-back tries from Sam Powell and Lachlan Fitzgibbon stretched them out to an unassailable lead. 'We spoke about our start all week – Hull have got a good starting pack that come hard with Herman Ese'ese leading it,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our three middles got after it this week and we got a 12-0 start. 'They pegged us back with some unanswered points but in the second half, our emphasis was on going hard again and I think we delivered on both of them.' Warrington kept Hull pretty much at arm's length for the rest of the game, but there was time for a scare when Lewis Martin crossed on Thewlis' right edge. However, video referee Jack Smith chalked the try off after replays showed centre partner Rodrick Tai had done enough to force Martin into touch before he grounded the ball. 'We spoke about moments and winning more of them,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our system works but it's about making one-on-ones and Rod getting around and making that kind of tackle is part of our system. 'It was a massive effort – the game could have been in the swing there but that popped their bubble a bit.'
