Govt sanctions Rs 11 cr for repairing Ram Jhula bridge
Built over River Ganga in 1986, the iconic bridge has been closed for two wheelers since August, 2023 and only a limited number of pedestrians were allowed on it since then.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has sanctioned Rs 11 crore for the repair and maintenance work of the bridge, Uttarakhand's forest minister Subodh Uniyal told PTI. 'Tenders for the maintenance work of the bridge will be floated in 10 days. The maintenance work will be completed in the next six months. After that this bridge will be completely safe for the public,' he said.

Like a slap on face: For drivers of BluSmart, a tough afterlife
Gurgaon/New Delhi: They were the faces behind the green revolution in India's ride-hailing sector — the drivers who steered BluSmart's fleet of electric cabs to success in Gurgaon, Delhi and Bengaluru. With their crisp uniforms and courteous demeanour, they helped build a loyal customer base that valued punctuality and reliability. Founded in 2019, this all-EV fleet was soon challenging Uber and Ola. But their world came crashing down this April when BluSmart abruptly stopped operations, leaving nearly 10,000 drivers stranded at the crossroads of uncertainty. So sudden was BluSmart's demise that many drivers were still in the middle of rides when the company stopped taking bookings. For many like Amarjeet Singh, the shutdown was nothing short of devastation. Having recently brought his wife and mother to Delhi and invested in a new motorcycle with a bank loan, the BluSmart driver's dreams of a stable family life were shattered overnight. Affected by financial turmoil of Gensol, a company it shared founders with and from which it leased EVs, BluSmart recently went into insolvency, dimming hopes that it could bounce back in the near future. BluSmart had positioned itself as a driver-friendly alternative to conventional ride-hailing services. Unlike Ola and Uber, drivers here didn't need to own or rent vehicles. The company provided electric cars, promised weekly payouts, medical insurance up to Rs 1 lakh, and flexible schedules. Most drivers earned between Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000 a month. The aftermath of the shutdown was brutal for drivers. Mukesh Kumar, who now works as a family driver in Delhi, says, "I made nearly Rs 30,000-35,000 a month, and it was all mine. No EMIs, no CNG costs." He misses the fixed schedules and incentive-based payments of BluSmart. For Kamil Hussain, the transition has been harsh. Now driving a rented car for other ride-hailing services, he has to get used to the cutthroat competition of earning a commission and the trying hours one needs to put in for it. "I pay Rs 1,100 daily as rent for the cab. On my best days, I earn Rs 3,000. But there's rent and fuel. So imagine where my earning has gone. I am not alone. There are so many drivers like me." Deepak Kumar was one of those who had read early signs of trouble at BluSmart. He secured a new job just before the shutdown. "By March, cars had maintenance issues, and roadside assistance had become unreliable. For instance, when we'd go to the BluSmart hub, cars would have punctures or faults, taking hours to fix. Once, my car broke down on the highway. It took four hours to get help from the company," he says. These signs were enough for Kumar to make up his mind. "People were already talking about it. I sensed it was time to move on." In Bengaluru, Mohammad Illyas has been idle since losing his job. "Sometimes, I do odd jobs for private travel, mostly out of station. Otherwise, I don't have a regular job. It's getting difficult to manage expenses in a city like Bengaluru," he says. Drivers recalled being asked to abandon their vehicles in the middle of their shift and make their own way home the day the company stopped taking bookings and a brief communication was sent to them. A six-year relationship was snapped in seconds. "I was in Gurgaon when I got a call saying there would be no more rides from tomorrow. We were told to leave the cab wherever we were and return home. People were in far-off locations. They had to make arrangements to get back on their own," a driver who requested not to be named told TOI. Adding to their woes, many claim their dues remain unpaid, with no company representative available to address their concerns. "The company's registered office in Gurgaon shut down. Phone numbers are no longer in use," says the driver quoted above. Today, BluSmart's website still displays smiling photos of drivers and the tagline, "Drive with BluSmart and be the driver of real change!" But for thousands of drivers like Singh or Illyas, the reality is starkly different. "It distinguished us from the rest. Now, we're back to being like everyone else," says Illyas. UP gets Centre's nod to launch AI-powered road safety project
Lucknow: To be executed at zero cost by public sector enterprise ITI Limited and mLogica, the pilot project will focus on mitigating road safety hazards resulting in accidents, vehicle telematics, weather patterns, crash report analysis, and blackspot analysis. The objective of the study is to identify the root causes of road accidents. The research and analytics studies will help the transport department of UP to sharpen its policies and strategy to check fatal car crashes. The Yogi Adityanath govt has already set the foundation for a data-driven administrative model by allocating Rs 10 crore in the state budget for FY 2025–26. Upon successful testing, the AI engine will be scaled up across key transport services—such as the faceless licence and permit system, enforcement modernisation, revenue collection, e-challan system, and the Vahan-Sarathi platform—positioning Uttar Pradesh as a national leader in tech-enabled governance. This will enable transparent, swift, and scientific transport services for citizens. The AI engine will also facilitate interoperability across revenue administration, e-challan processing, and the Vahan-Sarathi databases, enabling automated alerts and risk scoring related to tax liabilities, fee payments, and document validity. Transport commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh stated that implementation has already begun, with the ITI - mLogica team collaborating with the department's IT, enforcement, and road safety divisions. FASTag Annual Pass: Easing the hassle of travelling through the highways countrywide, the FASTag Annual Pass will launch on Independence Day (August 15). Introduced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the annual pass will be available only for private vehicles at designated National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas. Here is everything you need to know about the FASTag annual pass. What is the FASTag Annual Pass? Effective from August 15, 2025, the FASTag Annual Pass allows free passage of private car/jeep/van at designated National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas for one year or 200 trips (whichever is earlier). What is the price of FASTag Annual Pass? The FASTage Annual Pass is priced at Rs 3,000 for the base year 2025-26. The payment can be made through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or the NHAI website. How to activate FASTag Annual Pass? The Annual Pass will be activated after verifying the eligibility of the vehicle and the associated FASTag. Once the Rs 3,000 payment is confirmed, the Annual Pass will be activated on the registered FASTag within two hours. How long is the FASTag Annual Pass valid? The Annual Pass is valid for one year from the date of activation or 200 transactions (trips), whichever comes first. Once the Annual Pass completes either 200 trips or one year from the date of activation, it will automatically revert to a regular FASTag. Can FASTag Annual Pass be transferred to another vehicle? No, the pass is non-transferable and is valid only for the vehicle on which the FASTag is affixed and registered. If a user uses it on another vehicle, it will be deactivated. What counts as a single trip under the FASTag Annual Pass? For point-based fee plazas, each crossing of a fee plaza counts as one trip. A round trip (to and fro) counts as two trips. As for Closed Tolling fee plazas, one pair of entry and exit counts as one trip.
