Bride Masters Samoan Dance in Just 5 Days to Honor Husband's Family at Wedding: 'I Wanted to Make Them Proud' (Exclusive)

Yahoo8 hours ago
Just days before her wedding, Madi decided to learn a traditional Samoan dance to honor her husband Samu's heritage
With only five days to prepare, she practiced between wedding events and even during a trip out of state — capturing the journey on TikTok
Her surprise performance moved Samu's family to tears and went viral, becoming a powerful symbol of love, respect and cultural connectionWhen Madi decided to learn a traditional Samoan dance just five days before her wedding, she didn't expect the world to be watching. But a TikTok video capturing her journey — complete with hotel-room rehearsals and joyful nerves — quickly touched millions.
'I always knew deep down that I wanted to do it, even early on in our relationship,' Madi exclusively tells PEOPLE, remembering the moment the idea took hold.
Inspired by videos she'd seen of brides embracing Samoan traditions, she felt a quiet pull to do the same for her future husband, Samu, and the family she was about to join.
Their love story began years earlier at the University of Utah, where Madi played softball and Samu was on the football team. They met through a campus ministry group and bonded over faith, friendship and eventually, something more.
'Some of our friends started putting the bug in our ear about how we would be a cute couple,' Samu tells PEOPLE with a grin. That playful encouragement turned into a connection that grew steadily over time.
Their first date, complete with matching knee injuries, still makes them laugh. 'He did not want to reschedule. He was very adamant about making sure it happened,' Madi recalls, remembering how they hobbled into an arcade together; she was on crutches, he was fresh out of surgery.
Four years later, after countless FaceTime calls and long-distance stretches while Madi worked as a nurse, Samu proposed by a lake with the help of his family. 'I've waited my whole life for her,' he says.
Wedding planning brought excitement and emotion, but also a surprise challenge Madi didn't see coming. 'The five days thing wasn't ideal,' she says, laughing.
Originally, she tried to teach herself a dance from YouTube, unsure what would resonate. 'Then he said his cousin was going to choreograph a dance,' she explains.
But when that choreography finally arrived, Madi was in Georgia for a funeral, practicing alone in her hotel room and sending videos back to Samu's sisters for feedback. 'There's no way I'm going to know if I'm doing this right,' she remembers thinking, unsure but determined.
The pressure didn't let up as the wedding approached. 'The odds were really kind of stacked,' Samu says, noting that even his mom, who'd planned to help, had to leave town unexpectedly. Still, his sisters stepped in, squeezing in a last-minute rehearsal just two days before the ceremony. 'It was a family effort for sure,' Samu adds. 'Everybody pitched in.'
By the time the moment arrived, Madi had barely caught her breath from the whirlwind of the week but she stepped onto the dance floor with everything she had. 'I felt all of the emotions,' she shares. 'The biggest thing I wanted to do was make them proud and also show them that I really value their culture.'
For Samu, the moment landed like a dream. 'There's just this sense of awe,' he says. 'I always dreamed about my wife doing [the dance] … and to see her step in and accept it in that way was so powerful and beautiful to me at that moment.'
He saw something deeper than choreography. 'In marriage, you're saying yes to this person, but not just to everything — also to the culture,' Samu explains. 'It was such a beautiful thing.'
The experience also deepened his own connection to his Samoan roots. 'It definitely helped me, encouraged me to learn more, but also just rekindled this love that I have for where I come from,' he says.
Madi, too, walked away transformed. 'Before, the way that I viewed his culture was, I thought it was cool,' she says. 'But now after learning it and seeing the love that his family has for the culture, I think it's made me appreciate it more.'
'Now I would describe it as beautiful,' she continues. 'I think doing the dance, seeing their reaction, it's made me not only love him more, but his family more.'
There were bumps along the way — moments where the blending of two cultures felt overwhelming. 'At first we had a conversation where there were other aspects of the Samoan culture that were kind of creeping into the wedding and that weren't necessarily planned,' Samu shares.
But the couple chose to approach it all with grace and patience, staying grounded in communication. 'We had to just talk through how we felt,' Madi says.
That patience was tested again during the wedding itself, when Madi was pulled into a third unexpected dance by Samu's aunts. 'I was already overwhelmed 'cause I'd just finished the dance,' she remembers. 'But then a lot of his aunts were getting me ready. I was so confused.'
Samu quickly stepped in to reassure her. 'He was understanding, he was like, 'Just do what you were doing in your dance,' ' Madi says. 'And then I think seeing him dance, it made me happy again.'
Madi's family heritage wasn't left behind, either. 'In the Filipino culture, we also do a money dance,' she says. 'A lot of my uncles wore a traditional Filipino shirt as their formal attire. I feel like that was welcomed pretty well.'
The TikTok, which began as a way to share her personal journey, soon turned into something much bigger. 'I think the most common thing that I saw was people being like, they were able to see when two people get married, they see true love in action when the spouse is willing to learn things of their culture,' Madi says.
The comments from Samoan viewers in particular meant the world to her. 'There were a few Samoans that commented and they're like, 'You did great. We appreciate you sharing our culture.' And it's really cool to see,' she says.

Samu, who doesn't use TikTok himself, was stunned by the wave of encouragement. 'It was just cool to see the positive side of social media, people rallying around this idea of two people coming together, loving one another and representing a culture and representing it well,' he tells PEOPLE.
Through it all, the couple say their love only deepened. 'There was a lot of patience, kindness, graciousness, compassion toward one another in that time,' Samu says. 'To have her come in and basically embrace my family, my culture, us with open arms was so amazing.'
The day was also grounded in their shared faith, with a communion ceremony and worship led by close friends. 'We attest our relationship and everything that we have to God,' Samu says. 'We wouldn't be here without Him.'
As the views keep climbing and the comments pour in, Madi and Samu are still soaking in the impact of it all. 'We learned that it's okay to feel overwhelmed,' Madi says. 'But what matters is walking through it together, giving each other grace and embracing the beauty of both our backgrounds.'

Some Of Our Favorite Hidden Indie Gems Are In The Big Steam Sale

The Steam summer sale is an annual opportunity to add vast numbers to the teetering pile of games you'll get around to playing someday. With bonkers 90-percent-off deals, you can grab recent big-name games for under $5, all of which you'll definitely remember to load up someday. But it's not just the AAA blockbusters that are cheap right now; the sale also includes fantastic unknown indie games at far less risky prices. Buying an unknown game, or one that's barely had any reviews, is fraught. Of course, for such games, that's a self-perpetuating problem—no giant buzz means no early sales, and no early sales fails to encourage others to take a chance. Fortunately, there are wonderful sites out there that root through the squillions of games to help you find the good stuff, like IndieGamesand Alpha Beta Gamer, and YouTube channels like SplatterCatGaming. (And, if I may, my own Buried Treasure.) So there's no better time than now to look through their recommendations, and then see if those games are cheaper in the Steam sale. But, to make life even easier for you, I've gone back through some of my favorite hidden indie treasures of recent times—games that are completely brilliant but mostly unknown—to see which are discounted right now. Read on for a few suggestions of games you might otherwise entirely miss, now at even lower prices. In an already fantastic year for point-and-click adventures, The Beekeeper's Picnic really stands out. This gorgeous exploration of the post-war relationship between Holmes and Watson, now living in retirement, is touching, smart, and stunningly written and acted. We wrote more about it here. Sale Price: $11.19 (20% off) Steam Page A super-smart, super-difficult puzzle game in which you play a ghost-like creature who is apparently driven to crush squids. You do this, as is so often the case, by pushing blocks onto them. But Ligo gets unique when you play as two or more of the main character at once, each moving in tandem and, upon coming into contact, globbing together to form a longer (or taller, or more right-angled) creature. It's properly tough stuff, presented very beautifully. Sale Price: $12 (20% off) Steam Page Imagine playing No Man's Sky through the lo-fi worlds of Ed Key's Proteus. That's the slightly-overselling-it pitch I have for Miro, a game made by one person with huge ambitions. This is such a lovely example of where indie gaming can be utterly different from big-name-publisher games, taking big swings without necessarily being able to connect them all, set in scratchy, experimental weirdness. We wrote lots more about it here. Sale Price: $12 (20% off) Steam Page Imagine if you took all of the old-school Zelda games, smooshed them up in a blender, put the results in a centrifuge, and then titrated the results into a single drop. You'd be mad. Don't do that. You can't even blend digital concepts. But Master Key does make me wonder. This is a stunning piece of game design, a progressively unlocking RPG delivered in black-and-white, with no dialogue (people communicate in pictograms), that'll tickle all the places A Link To The Past can. We reviewed it here. Sale Price: $7.19 (40% off) Steam Page City building games have become just incredibly complicated in recent years, letting you control everything but the color of the gum on the sidewalk, but sometimes it's pleasant to hark back to those older times when things were somewhat simpler. Dawnfolk does that with its tile-based town creation, but then adds in a whole lot more with its puzzle-like goals, increasingly involved challenges, and the gorgeous feature whereby teeny events take place within the individual tiles. We wrote much more coherently about it here. Sale Price: $12 (20% off) Steam Page We are so very blessed with great puzzle games. (I'm currently hooked on Nurikabe World.) But every now and then there's something that's extra special. Polimines is one such game, a logic puzzle game that is so perfectly delivered as to be sublime. That first game joined the ranks of Hexcells with its elegance of design, and now this far more involved, complicated, and fantastic sequel, Polimines 2, surpasses it. I'd explain the conceit to you, but your eyes would glaze over at my attempts, so just watch the video above to get it. Both games are bundled together at the best price I've ever seen for this. Sale Price: $5.61 (58% off) Steam Page If you're old enough to remember Hexen and Heretic, then sit down, you look tired. And while you're here, play Wizordum. If, on the other hand, you're not over a thousand years old, then oh boy, do I have something fantastic to introduce you to. It's this game called Wizordum, based on some old games you won't have heard of. This is a spectacular FPS in which you mix melee and ranged attacks with your sword-and-spells character. It's also an old-school boomer shooter that's not about frantic speed. Instead this is much more about discovering secrets, finding bonus areas stacked with ammo, and methodically solving vast level-sized puzzles to find keys and open doors. It's bloody marvelous. Sale Price: $16 (20% off) Steam Page . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Owners Try and Film Husky Escaping in Backyard, but She Has Other Plans

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman trying to capture a typical moment from her dog got a big—and hilarious—surprise. Her TikTok video of the moment has left the internet in stitches, showcasing her husky, who thwarted her attempt to document the dog's escape habit by stealing the camera mid-act. The footage has resonated with countless husky owners who are all too familiar with the breed's mischievous nature. "POV: You try to record how your dog has been escaping the backyard, but she had ideas of her own," the woman, @kimberlyjaidyn08, captioned the video, which shows the phone set up to film their husky's antics in the backyard. However, before the camera can capture her secret, the dog grabs the phone in her mouth and runs away. Stock photo: A Husky in an outdoor garden. Stock photo: A Husky in an outdoor garden. TRAVELARIUM/Getty Images "Oh," one commenter reacted. "I've never been carried by a dog before." TikTok users were quick to react, many acknowledging the breed's well-known intelligence and Houdini-like tendencies. "You're not supposed to show a husky where the camera is," one person wrote. "They too smart for that (I have three)," one commenter warned. Another user imagined the dog's thought process: "Mom forgot her rectangle, which is so weird, cause she takes it everywhere, I'll take it back to her." The escape artist reputation of huskies was also a recurring theme in the comments. "Once I saw that she's a husky, I knew it was over (I have a husky that also loves to escape, so I had to get a really long lead for her, so she can't miraculously hop the fence)," one user shared. Another TikToker wrote: "She's a husky. They're father-in-law's husky jumps their chicken wire and metal fence all the time, especially when it storms. He just goes to the front door though." "I was warned by my boyfriend (he has a husky and recently have a husky puppy to our little family) that they are Escape Pro," another added. "But this is so funny and cute." The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the Siberian husky as "a thickly coated, compact sled dog of medium size and great endurance." They are known for their "keen but amiable and even mischievous expression." Beyond their appearance, huskies are renowned for their high energy levels and a strong desire to explore. The AKC noted that Huskies are energetic and love a chase—secure running room is "a must," so, it seems the creator definitely provided the right environment for her sly pup. The breed's sociable nature also plays a role in their behavior. The AKC stated that as pack dogs, they enjoy quality time with their owners and other dogs. This combination of intelligence, energy and a friendly disposition makes for a dog that is both endearing and capable of surprising its owners with its antics.
