UGC forms fact-finding team to probe student's suicide case
University Grants Commission
(UGC) on Tuesday constituted a fact-finding committee to look into the student's self-immolation case at a govt college in Balasore and suggest measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The committee comprises four members and is being led by Raj Kumar Mittal, a UGC member and professor at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi. The other members are Sushma Yadav, a former commission member of the UGC, Ashima Mangla, UGC joint secretary, and Neerja Gupta, vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.
The committee shall submit a detailed report with findings and recommendations to the UGC within seven days of the issue of this order.
According to the terms of reference, the committee will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the availability and effectiveness of factors such as institutional policies, grievance redressal mechanisms, anti-harassment measures adopted as well as student support systems.
It will inspect the status of compliance by the institution with the provisions of the University Grants Commission (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2015, notified on May 2, 2016, and other guidelines issued by the UGC from time to time.

The committee will conduct an on-site assessment to verify the actual implementation of measures adopted by the institution for ensuring the safety of female students and well-being policies, beyond documented compliance. "Engagement with stakeholders, including students, faculty administrators, and support staff, to assess institutional culture, student experience, and challenges faced. Suggest measures for the prevention of such incidents in the future," the UGC letter read.

Haridwar: A stampede on the pedestrian route to Mansa Devi temple near Har Ki Pauri claimed eight lives and injured 28 others, at least four critically, on Sunday morning. Those dead were identified as Shanti Devi (60), her husband Rambharose (65), both from Badaun, UP; Sakal Dev (35) from Araria, Bihar; Arush (6), Vicky Saini (18), Vishal Kumar (19) -- all three from Rampur, UP; Vakeel Prasad (45) from Barabanki, UP; and Vipin Saini (19) from Kashipur, Udham Singh Nagar. 12 interstate theft accused held
1 2 3 4 Ranchi: A total of 12 accused wanted in two cases have been arrested on Saturday, Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said on Sunday. Nine were accused of robbing Namkum-based electricity department's central store on July 15. Another three members of a Durgapur-based gang were planning to steal from a power grid centre at Ormanjhi, he added. Police said that in the first case, 11 armed miscreants had broken into the Namkum-based electricity department's central store on July 15 and taken the employees captive before decamping with copper clips, conductors, and plate angles worth around Rs 16 lakh. The SSP said, "A case was registered and a special investigation team (SIT) led by DSP Amar Kumar Pandey formed to solve the case. Based on a tip-off and technical inputs, nine accused were arrested from different areas of the district. An auto rickshaw, a machine to cut wire, and the stolen materials were seized from the arrested." Pipra Tarn OC suspended in poppy smuggling, fake kidnapping case
1 2 Daltonganj: Palamu superintendent of police (SP) Reeshma Ramesan suspended the officer in-charge of the Pipra Tarn police station, Rajvardhan, over "colossal intelligence failure" . The suspension order, issued on July 25, comes in the wake of a scandal involving a staged kidnapping and illegal activities under the officer's jurisdiction. The SP said, "The officer in-charge failed to act on illegal activities occurring right under his nose, involving police station chowkidar Vinod Paswan and his son Niraj." The case unfolded when four men from Ludhiana, including Harmeet and Satbeer, travelled to Titlangi to purchase poppy husks. The controversy deepened with the revelation of a staged kidnapping for ransom involving Harmeet and Satbeer. The kidnapping, orchestrated by locals, including Niraj, was a cover for a poppy husk smuggling operation. The staged kidnapping resulted in Rs 7.50 lakh being extracted from their families.
