Bangladesh jails former chief justice Khairul Haque for murder during anti-Hasina protests
Former Chief Justice of Bangladesh ABM Khairul Haque was jailed in connection with a murder case that occurred during the July uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government. Haque did not have a defence lawyer during the trial read more Former Chief Justice of Bangladesh ABM Khairul Haque jailed after being named in murder case linked to last year's uprising against Hasina. X A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the imprisonment of former Chief Justice of Bangladesh ABM Khairul Haque in connection with a murder case that happened during the anti-government protests in July last year. The case involves a teenager named Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, who was shot dead during the July uprising, which eventually toppled the government of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to Bangladeshi news outlet The Dhaka Tribune, the order of imprisonment was issued by Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah following a hearing held on Thursday night. Earlier that evening at 7:45 pm (local time), Jatrabari police station Inspector Khaled Hasan, who is investigating the case, brought Khairul to court. The authorities submitted the petition for the detention of the former Bangladeshi chief justice. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Khairul was eventually presented before the court under tight police control at approximately 8:15 pm (local time). The prosecution alleged that Abdul Kaiyum, son of plaintiff Md Alauddin, was shot in the face and chest by the accused during a protest and collapsed near the Kajla police box. They noted that several other protesters were also killed in the incident. What are the accusations against the ex-Bangladeshi Chief Justice? The prosecution went on to claim that Khairul, during his tenure as Chief Justice from May 1, 2011, committed a criminal breach of trust and acts of sedition by misusing his judicial authority. The 81-year-old was also accused of delivering forged and fraudulent verdicts. The petition also mentioned that multiple cases against him remain pending in various police stations across the country. The prosecution also cited concerns that Khairul might use his past influence to disrupt the ongoing investigation and requested that he be held in custody until the trial is complete. While the court granted the plea, what was concerning was the fact that no defence lawyer was present at the hearing to represent Khairul. Meanwhile, news of his trial also triggered demonstrations outside the courtroom. Several pro-BNP lawyers and citizens gathered at the premises, chanting slogans and expressing anger toward the former top judge. The former chief justice was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from his Dhanmondi residence on Thursday afternoon, The Dhaka Tribune reported. As per the court document, Abdul Kaiyum Ahad was fatally shot on July 18, 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in front of the Kajla police box in Jatrabari. He was allegedly shot dead by Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station, who fired multiple shots into both of the boy's legs, causing his death on the spot. It is pertinent to note that ABM Khairul Haque served as the 19th Chief Justice of Bangladesh, assuming the role back in 2010. He retired the following year, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 67. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Interestingly, it was Khairul who delivered the landmark verdict of abolishing the caretaker government system. While serving the High Court Division, Khairul also ruled over the assassination case of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rehman and the case concerning the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.

Ahmedabad techie builds automated grenade detonation drone, Army orders 20 units
Ahmedabad-based engineer Keshavkant Sharma has developed a special drone named Gati, capable of carrying out targeted grenade attacks and safely returning after detonation. Designed specifically for military use, the drone has already impressed the Indian Army during testing, leading to an order of over 20 innovation addresses a critical battlefield requirement: the need for precision in grenade deployment. Traditional grenade attacks require manual pin removal, followed by lever release, with detonation occurring four seconds later. The Gati drone automates this entire drone doesn't just drop the grenade on location—it removes the grenade's pin and releases the lever," Sharma explained. "Without removing the pin, a grenade cannot explode. Our drone performs this action midair and ensures detonation at the target site. After the explosion, the drone returns safely." The drone can fly up to 7.5 kilometres at a height of 500 meters, carrying out targeted strikes with high accuracy. It weighs just 2.5 kilograms and has been successfully tested at its full said the idea stemmed from operational challenges faced during "Operation Sindoor." He said, "After some issues arose for our forces during Operation Sindoor, we thought of building such a drone that could attack enemy land with grenades and return safely."Gati was demonstrated in front of the Indian Army at Pokhran, following which the Army placed an order for more than 20 drones from Sharma's company, Protthapan. According to him, the use of such drones significantly reduces life loss on the modern warfare increasingly relying on drone technology for deep-strike capabilities, Sharma believes Gati marks a vital step forward. "Our drone hits the target from 7.5 km away, executes a grenade blast, and comes back," he said. "This has been successfully tested."- Ends

Over 3.52 lakh perform Amarnath Yatra in 21 days
More than 3.52 lakh devotees performed the ongoing Amarnath Yatra so far as another batch of 2,896 pilgrims left Jammu for the Valley on Friday, officials said. Officials added that the number of Yatris performing the Shri Amarnath ji Yatra during the last 21 days since it started on July 3, has crossed the expected figure of 3.50 lakh. "Another batch of 2,896 Yatris left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu on Friday in two escorted convoys for the two base camps." "First escorted convoy of 42 vehicles carrying 790 Yatris left at 3:30 a.m. for Baltal base camp while the second convoy of 75 vehicles carrying 2,106 Yatris left at 4:18 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp," officials said. 'Chhari Mubarak' (Lord Shiva's Holy Mace) was taken to the historic Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar for customary Puja on Thursday by a group of Sadhus led by Mahant Deependra Giri. The Puja at Shankaracharya Temple is held each year on the occasion of 'Haryali-Amavasya' (Shravan Amavasya) as per the age-old customs. On Friday, the Chhari Mubarak will be taken to the 'Sharika Bhawani' Temple atop the Hari Parvat hillock in Srinagar for customary Puja. Chhari Mubarak will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from Dashnami Akhara temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra. Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year's Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. Additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police. The Army has deployed more than 8,000 special commandos to secure the passage of the pilgrims this year. The Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. Devotees approach the holy cave shrine situated 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot. This trek takes a pilgrim four days to get to the cave shrine. Those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after having darshan. No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons. The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.
