Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Wants Maya Hawke to Help Out Her Teenage Daughter (Exclusive)

Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Wants Maya Hawke to Help Out Her Teenage Daughter (Exclusive)

Yahoo24-05-2025
Sarah Michelle Gellar is sharing why she taps Maya Hawke to help her teen daughter Charlotte.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, 48, opened up about the subject while chatting exclusively with Parade amid their partnership with the Ask2BSure campaign, which aims to help parents and their kids further understand the increased risk for meningitis among teens and young adults.

When Gellar was asked if Charlotte, 15, will follow her footsteps into acting, the Cruel Intentions alum says she uses Hawke — whose parents are actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman — as an example. The pair became close friends after starring in Netflix's Do Revenge together in 2022.
'There's no question, but we've told her she has to wait til she graduates high school, and then she can make decisions about what she wants to do once she's finished school,' Gellar begins. 'It's hard, when it's both your parents jobs, to tell your kids, 'No, you can't do that,' or 'No, you shouldn't do that.' But at the same time, I think there's a different pressure on them, and I think that it's better for them to be fully formed people to be able to face that pressure.'
She continues: 'I look at Maya Hawke. [She's] always my example. And I've actually had Maya talk to Charlotte about why it's better to go to sets, sit on sets. I let Charlotte work on sets behind the scenes so she can soak it all in and learn it, but wait a little bit because there's a different pressure, I think, in that situation.'
Reiterating why she enlists Hawke, 26, to keep an open dialogue with Charlotte, Gellar jokes: 'Maya's way cooler than me.'
As for Gellar and fellow Buffy co-star Alyson Hannigan's partnership with the Ask2BSure campaign, the pair tell Parade that it was important for them — especially as mothers to teenagers — to get the word out about making sure their kids are vaccinated against the five disease-causing types of meningitis, including A, B, C, W and Y, all of which can lead to death or severe lifelong complications.
While many teens and young adults receive vaccinations to help protect against groups A, C, W and Y, most may still be missing a vaccination for meningitis B. Ages 16 to 23 are at higher risk for contracting meningitis B through common behaviors like living in close quarters, kissing, sharing drinks and more.

'This campaign is such an important issue to just go talk to your doctor and just get the information,' Hannigan says. 'I learned so much when I talked to my kids' pediatrician, and so much I didn't know. And I thought I was on top of everything. I learned so much, and so we're just encouraging parents to go ask their doctor.'
Gellar adds: 'When Alyson was first doing the campaign, I was like, 'Oh yeah, my kids were vaccinated for meningitis,' and then you would go, 'Oh, wait, there's this other strain of it that is not part of the original vaccination series,' and that is really easy to slip through the cracks. And because it hits the ages between 16 to 23, which are the most vulnerable — which is exactly where our kids are — it can tailspin you.'

5 best psychological thriller movies to stream on Netflix

Looking for a thriller movie full of intrigue, suspense and, perhaps most importantly, mind-bending twists? Then you'll want to comb through Netflix's sizeable library of psychological thrillers, but fair warning — there are more than a few subpar flicks in the mix. Fortunately, to save you some time, I've carefully combed through the streaming service's movie catalog and picked out the most compelling picks that deserve a spot on your watchlist. Each of the psychological thrillers on this list explores the darkest corners of the human psyche and will have you gripped from beginning to end. Some of these can be pretty stressful watches, as characters face deadly situations and even wonder if they're losing their grip on reality, but each one offers a highly satisfying journey by the very end. So, without further preamble, these are the five best psychological thriller movies on Netflix right now. 'Watcher' is one of the most effective thrillers I've seen in recent years. It plays on a sense of paranoia, and that uneasy feeling that you're being watched by somebody (or something), and after streaming it for the first time, I felt eyes on me just about everywhere I went. The movie centers on Julia (Maika Monroe), a young woman who's recently moved to Bucharest after her boyfriend takes a new job. Struggling to settle and feeling lonely in this foreign environment, her isolation turns to chilling discomfort when she believes a mysterious stranger is watching her. And adding to the horror, there's a serial killer on the loose as well. Could the two be connected? Monroe is the movie's biggest strength, with her committed performance drawing you into Lisa's plight, and the slowly building sense of terror is supremely effective. It all leads to a strong ending, which will stay with you long after the credits roll. Watch "The Watcher" on Netflix now I rank 'The Devil All the Time' as one of Netflix's most overlooked original movies. It was somewhat divisive at release, but I very much landed on the side of the fence that felt it was an engrossing watch, strengthened by serious star power delivering strong performances. Set in the mid-20th century, it follows a group of complex characters as their lives intertwine in interesting, unexpected and even sinister ways. It tackles a lot of heavy themes, and perhaps its most off-putting element is the lengthy 140-minute runtime. This is no easy watch. The somber movie demands your full attention and a bit of patience. Stick with it and you're rewarded with a thoughtful thriller with deeper themes to unspool. As for the cast, it includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård, Sebastian Stan, Riley Keough, Mia Wasikowska, and Jason Clarke. That's plenty of A-list names. Watch "The Devil All the Time" on Netflix now If you thought being seated next to a crying baby was the worst thing that could happen on a flight, think again. Lisa (Rachel McAdams) faces the trip from hell when she's seated next to Jackson (Cillian Murphy), who might look handsome, but is plotting something sinister. Jackson is part of a domestic terrorist plot with plans to assassinate a high-ranking government official, and Lisa's assistance is required to complete the mission. And let's just say, Jackson isn't exactly going to politely ask for her help, resorting to blackmail to force her to participate in the attempt on the life of the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. The claustrophobic setting of a flight really adds to the suspense here, and watching Lisa try to outmaneuver the man forcing her to participate in a murder is seriously engaging. It's also not a bad thing that the film boasts two credible stars in the leading roles. Watch "Red Eye" on Netflix now First things first, I am not talking about 2013's 'The Call' starring Halle Berry, which is also on Netflix (and very much not worth watching). Instead, I'm referring to the 2020 South Korean psychological thriller of the same name, which is packed full of twists and turns. A remake of a British movie called 'The Caller,' this chilling thriller with sci-fi elements, focuses on two women (Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo) who live in the same home, only 20 years apart. But the wrinkle is that these two can communicate across time via a telephone. And their strange connection might be key to changing their own fates. 'The Call' strays into chilling territory with some moments that are straight-up horror material, so it's not for the easily spooked. But if you can handle a few scares, its 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes should be enough to convince you to add it to your Netflix watchlist. Watch "The Call" on Netflix now In most thriller movies, when a ruthless killer is chasing the protagonist, they have two choices: run or hide. In 'Don't Move,' Iris (Kelsey Asbille) can't do either because she's been injected with a paralytic agent by her sinister tormentor (Finn Wittrock), and she must find a way to evade him as the drug slowly shuts her entire body down. It's a great setup for a thriller full of heart-pounding moments, and the tension is often ratcheted up to such an extreme degree that you'll be holding your breath alongside its heroine. The fact that Iris has a tragic backstory, which sees her struggle to find a reason to keep on going in the wake of losing her young son, only adds to the emotional stakes. The movie's biggest boon is Wittrock's deliciously unhinged performance as a sadistic stalker, and while 'Don't Move' plays a little fast and loose with its logic rules (Iris's ability to move seems governed mostly by the needs of the plot), it's, for the most part, a breathless thrill ride. Netflix's Apple Cider Vinegar, which tells the story of wellness influencer and conwoman Belle Gibson, has received a massive eight nominations, including Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Lead Actress in a Drama. Channel 7's red carpet coverage, hosted by Sonia Kruger and Chris Brown, will air at 7pm (AEST), followed by the live awards ceremony at 7.30pm. Poh Ling Yeow and Julia Morris show off red carpet dresses OK then, the stars are now arriving on the red carpet so let's bring you some more looks. We had sneak peek of Julia Morris' dress earlier and here it is in full. And she's posing alongside fellow Gold Logie nominee Poh Ling Yeow who looks stunning in a green and beige number. Going for gold... in gold Well, well, well. Is this Lynne McGranger anticipating a Gold Logie win tonight? The favourite for the award has donned a stunning golden dress for the evening. Make of it what you will. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lynne McGranger (@lynnemcgranger) Logies moments to remember While the stars hope it will all be plain sailing on the night, we've learnt over the years that's never the case. Whether it be slip-ups, drunken antics or a joke too far, the Logies delivers plenty of shocks, even from those you least expect. One moment that came to light years after it happened was Tracy Grimshaw's embarrassing hotel mix-up. "I locked myself out of my hotel room starkers. It was 3:45am and there was no one in the hallway," the revered host revealed to Kyle and Jackie O about her Logies night in 1998. Grimshaw, in a presumably drunken state after drinking tequilas with James Packer into the early hours of the morning, thought she was heading to the bathroom when she opened the door into the hallway. "I realised that the guest opposite [my hotel room] had The Australian delivered. Thank god it was a broadsheet and not the Herald Sun!" she joked. Read more of the Logies' most controversial moments, including several from Karl Stefanovic, here. Wild weather not dampening spirits Our team is all set on the red carpet for this year's Logies and will be bringing you exclusive moments throughout the evening. Lachlan has opted for a warm turtle neck on what is a pretty miserable afternoon in Sydney with plenty of wind and rain. However the conditions are not impacting proceedings too much, thankfully. What food is served at the Logies? While we know there's plenty of drinks had at the Logies, what is the food like? Well according to Travel Guides stars Karly Fisher and Bri Auty, it certainly matches the occasion. The pair, who are hoping their show wins Best Lifestyle Program for the fourth year in a row, revealed to Yahoo what was on the menu last year. "I had gold-encrusted lamb. [Bri] had fish, which then I think I ate as well,' Karly recalls. 'And then there was dessert. I've actually got a video of me eating them all. I did a kind of mukbang on my phone, eating all these desserts. They were stunning. 'There was a lava cake, but not a Domino's lava cake. It was like a proper, bougie lava cake. I will say the food was what I was probably most looking forward to, and it did not disappoint. It was so yummy.' Julia Morris practices Gold Logie victory kiss Gold Logie nominee Julia Morris has given us a glimpse of her dress for the night and has practised kissing the Gold Logie award in the process. Morris has been pretty active on her socials, and yesterday also revealed a late-night manicure in her preparations for the big day. And while taking to your feet with an electric file after a cocktail isn't recommended, Morris later revealed it was all a success. Take a look at her outfit for the night below. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julia Morris (@ladyjuliamorris) Who has the most Logies nominations? The ABC has again dominated this year's Logies when it comes to nominations. The public broadcaster has a total of 44 nominations. Commercial network Nine is the closet competition with 23 (up to 32 if you include streaming platform Stan which it owns). Netflix's Apple Cider Vinegar about wellness influencer and conwoman Belle Gibson has an impressive eight nominations, although they are spread across just four awards. The streaming giant's Territory isn't far behind with seven nominations tonight. The ABC's Fisk has five, while Binge's Colin From Accounts and the ABC's Return To Paradise have four each. Netflix's Heartbreak High has three. Who is the favourite to win the Gold Logie? If you voted in our poll shared earlier, you would have seen Lynne McGranger is the clear favourite to win the Gold Logie tonight among Yahoo readers, with 37 per cent of your believing she'll take the top award. Nineteen per cent of you think Ally Langdon will win it, while 17 per cent say Poh Ling Yeow. And that's the way the bookmakers are going, with Sportsbet paying $1.37 for a McGranger win. They have Langdon at $5 and Hamish Blake at $8.50. Poh Ling Yeow is further back at $13.00 What time do stars start their day for the Logies? While you'll be turning on your TV set in the evening, those involved are getting ready long before you get comfy. And while some celebs' days will be busier than others, Gold Logie nominee Lynne McGranger has offered an insight into how gruelling Sunday can be. "I think I've got to do some early morning television… I'll probably do hair and makeup, and then I'll probably have a couple of hours off," she told Yahoo Lifestyle. "I'll be in makeup again I think at around lunchtime for the Logies, and then I have to be ready to go at 2.30pm – what sort of a ridiculous hour is that?" "But because I'm presenting, I've got to stay nice. I can't be necking the champagne, otherwise I'll get on stage and I'll be dribbling. So I just have to pace myself and be sensible for once in my life." Sam Pang reveals this year's Logies jokes already had a run Sam Pang is returning for his third consecutive year hosting the Logies. The comedian has been a huge hit in the top gig thanks to his brutal yet hilarious approach, with no-one across Australian TV safe when it comes to his jokes. But there's plenty of work that goes into his presenting, with Pang telling Ross and Russ on 3AW Breakfast he scripted this year's jokes and trialled them at a small comedy club in Melbourne. "I got up for twenty minutes and trialled some stuff," he said, saying some material was cut based on the reaction of the audience. 'The only thing you don't want to do is get up there on Sunday night and say a joke and at the end of it they didn't even know it was a joke." Last year Pang took aim at Channel Seven's internal issues despite the network broadcasting the awards. Who do you think will win the Gold Logie? Right. Now we've run you through the Gold Logie nominees, who do you think will win it? Have your say in our poll below. Gold Logie nominee: Hamish Blake Rounding out this year's Gold Logie nominees is Hamish Blake, who has openly discouraged viewers from voting for him as the only man in the group. The comedian and radio host is nominated for Lego Masters, and previously won in both 2012 and 2022. 2025 marks his sixth nomination. How many Logies awards are there? We have a new award tonight in the Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter, with a total of 23 awards up for grabs tonight. With so many awards, tonight's proceedings could easily stretch well beyond the scheduled time, as it has done in the past. Last year, the Gold Logie was only handed out close to midnight. So buckle in for a long night. Gold Logie nominee: Sonia Kruger Sonia Kruger is one of only two Gold Logie nominees this year who have already won the award, having taken home the trophy in 2023. This year, she's nominated for her hosting roles on The Voice, Dancing With The Stars, and last year's Logies red carpet coverage. View this post on Instagram A post shared by soniakruger (@soniakruger) Gold Logie nominee: Lisa Millar ABC star Lisa Millar is the only Gold Logie nominee this year who has never previously been nominated in any category at the awards show. The veteran journalist is nominated for her work on Back Roads, Muster Dogs, and News Breakfast, which she left in August 2024. 'I cannot believe that this kid who had a big dream to make it in this industry is now being nominated for the Gold Logie, the biggest award of them all,' she told Yahoo Lifestyle. 'I don't go to the Logies very often, I've only been to the Logies three times in my life, and last year was one of them. If you had told me, 'Hey, next year you're going to be at the Logies and you're going to be a Gold Logie nominee', I would've laughed at you.' Gold Logie nominee: Ally Langdon In addition to her Gold Logie nomination, Ally Langdon is nominated for the inaugural Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter. After taking home the Silver Logie for Best News or Public Affairs Presenter last year, the A Current Affair admitted to Yahoo Lifestyle she wasn't quite sure how to campaign for her first-ever Gold Logie nomination. 'My approach last year with the Silver was I just ignored it, and like if you looked on my socials, you wouldn't have even known. But I don't know if I'm going to be able to get away with that this time round,' she shared. 'I feel like I'm here, I'm the face of A Current Affair, but I very much feel like that's who I'm representing for this. It's not sort of 'Ally for the Gold', it's 'ACA for the Gold', and I just happen to sit in the chair.' Can I still vote for the Logies? There's still time to get your vote in for the 2025 Logies. The Most Popular Presenter, Most Popular New Talent, and Most Popular News or Public Affairs Reporter categories will close at 7.30pm (AEST) tonight, and the Gold Logie votes will stay open until 10.30pm. What happened at the Logies last year? There was a first Gold Logie win for veteran presenter Larry Emdur 12 months ago, and as promised, he recognised the moment with a tattoo on his backside the following morning live on The Morning Show. The other big winners on the night were 15-year-old Felix Cameron who won two of Boy Swallows Universe's five Logies, while Utopia won all three comedy awards. Cameron won the hearts of the nation when he broke down in tears during his first acceptance speech which he'd written down on a piece of paper because his phone was broken. Relive other moments from the night via our 2024 Logies live blog here. Gold Logie nominee: Poh Ling Yeow Fourteen years after being nominated for Most Popular New Female Talent, Poh Ling Yeow is nominated for the coveted Gold Logie this year. Fellow MasterChef judge Sofia Levin is also nominated for Most Popular New Talent, while the reality show itself is up for Best Competition Reality Program. Poh told Yahoo Lifestyle that while she felt extremely honoured to be nominated for the Gold Logie, she's especially thrilled it's alongside five other women. 'It feels really amazing to be part of this historical moment,' she said. 'And I think also, quite a few of the ladies are middle-aged, which I think is amazing, because I think this is our moment to shine.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Poh Ling Yeow (@pohlingyeow) Julia Morris' swipe after 14-year first for Gold Logie Six of this year's seven Gold Logie nominees are women and if we're honest, it's about time. You have to go back 14 years to 2011 for female nominees to outweigh the men. And even then, Karl Stefanovic claimed the award on the night. In the 11 awards handed out since, only three have been won by women, with tonight a better chance than any to add to that number. Nominee Julia Morris couldn't help but take a swipe at the lack of representation for women this week, joking Hamish Blake's inclusion among the nominees was a win for men. "The girls keep getting all the opportunities," she sarcastically told KIIS' Will and Woody. "Women just kept getting so many opportunities. So yes, I think it's time that male voices were heard actually. Someone needs to say something."Poh Ling Yeow and Julia Morris show off red carpet dresses OK then, the stars are now arriving on the red carpet so let's bring you some more looks. While you'll be turning on your TV set in the evening, those involved are getting ready long before you get comfy. So I just have to pace myself and be sensible for once in my life." While you'll be turning on your TV set in the evening, those involved are getting ready long before you get comfy. Sam Pang reveals this year's Logies jokes already had a run Sam Pang is returning for his third consecutive year hosting the Logies. Sam Pang is returning for his third consecutive year hosting the Logies. Someone needs to say something." Six of this year's seven Gold Logie nominees are women and if we're honest, it's about time.
