Adrian Houser tosses a gem in White Sox win over Rockies

July 5 - Adrian Houser tossed a season-high eight innings, Edgar Quero hit his first major league home run, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 in Denver on Friday night. Houser (4-2) allowed two runs - both unearned - and struck out six. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings. Mike Tauchman had two hits against his former team, Miguel Vargas also contributed two hits and Grant Taylor got the final three outs for his third save for Chicago. The White Sox snapped a three-game skid. Chicago's Colson Montgomery made his major league debut at shortstop, and had an eventful first game. In his first big-league at-bat he reached on a catcher's interference, the first player in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to do so in his first plate appearance, according to and Elias Sports Bureau. He then made an over-the-shoulder, sprawled out catch of Ryan Ritter's broken-bat blooper to left field to rob Colorado of a run. Mickey Moniak had two hits for the Rockies, who have won only one opener of a home series this season. Antonio Senzatela (3-12) allowed three runs on seven hits in 5-2/3 innings. Quero's solo homer in the sixth put Chicago ahead 3-2 and Houser and Taylor maintained the lead. Houser allowed just a walk over his final three innings, and he erased that runner with a double play. Taylor gave up a two-out single to Moniak in the ninth but struck out Ryan McMahon to end the game. The White Sox grabbed the lead in the fourth inning. Andrew Benintendi and Vargas led off with singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks Baldwin. Quero walked and following a lineout, Michael A. Taylor singled to right field to bring in two runs. Colorado got even in the fifth. Michael Toglia doubled with one out and Ritter reached on a two-base error by third baseman Josh Rojas, which allowed Toglia to score. Tyler Freeman tied it with a two-out double to left. -- Field Level Media

Angels' 10th-inning error gifts win to Blue Jays

July 5 - A throwing error on Ernie Clement's 10th-inning bunt allowed the winning run to score as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Friday for their sixth straight victory. After Nathan Lukes led off the 10th with a walk, Clement dropped a bunt. Angels reliever Sam Bachman (1-2) threw wildly to first, and automatic runner Myles Straw scored. Toronto's Chad Green (3-2) pitched around a hit batter in the top of the 10th. The Blue Jays and extended their lead in the American League East to two games over both the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. Jo Adell had a three-run homer and a double to extend his hit streak to 15 games for the Angels, who have alternated wins and losses for eight games. Toronto's Eric Lauer and the Angels Kyle Hendricks hooked up in a pitching duel until the sixth in the opener of a three-game series. Neither factored in the decision. Lauer allowed two runs, three hits and one walk with six strikeouts over six-plus innings. Hendricks gave up three runs, four hits and no walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two. Toronto scored three times to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. Will Wagner doubled off the wall in center field, took third on Tyler Heineman's sacrifice bunt and scored on Andres Gimenez's single to left. George Springer grounded a single to center, and Gimenez hobbled into third. Leo Jimenez pinch-ran for Gimenez as Jose Fermin replaced Hendricks. Bo Bichette grounded an RBI single to left. Another run scored when shortstop Zach Neto flubbed Addison Barger's potential double-play chopper for an error. Los Angeles' Mike Trout opened the seventh with an infield hit on a trickler along the third base line, and he took second when Taylor Ward lined a single off the left field wall. Nick Sandlin replaced Lauer, and Adell smashed the reliever's third pitch for mammoth homer to center, tying the game. It was Adell's 19th long ball of the year. --Field Level Media

Jordan Westburg homers in return as Orioles edge Braves

July 5 - Jordan Westburg returned from a lingering hand injury to hit a home run, leading the visiting Baltimore Orioles to a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. Baltimore ended a two-game losing streak and improved to 11-9 record in one-run games. Atlanta, which has lost seven of its past nine, fell to 11-21 in one-run contests. Westburg had not played since June 27 because of an injury to his left index finger. He went 3-for-4 with his eighth home run of the year, a solo shot in the third inning that produced the game's first run. The Orioles also got a boost from the return of Tyler O'Neill, who had been out since mid-May due to a left shoulder impingement. He came off the injured list and reached base on a hit and a walk and scored a run. Baltimore starter Charlie Morton (5-7), who missed his previous turn in the rotation because of elbow tendinitis, returned to face his former team. The veteran pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Morton has won five consecutive decisions. The Orioles' bullpen pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit nor a run. Andrew Kittredge followed Morton with 1 2/3 innings, Bryan Baker worked the eighth and Felix Bautista threw a perfect ninth to earn his 17th save. Atlanta starter Spencer Strider (3-7) went six-plus innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He has lost his past two outings despite making quality starts each time. The Orioles upped the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. O'Neill singled with one out, and Cedric Mullins followed with his 13th homer, a shot into the seats in right field. Braves rookie Drake Baldwin ended Morton's shutout bid when he drilled a two-run homer, his 10th, in the sixth inning. Atlanta's Matt Olson went 0-for-4, ending his streak of reaching base at 33 straight games. It had been the longest active streak in the majors. --Field Level Media
