Pradhan was addressing the International Conference of Young Scientists hosted by Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) in collaboration with the Global Young Academy (GYA), the Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
The theme of the week-long conference that will conclude on June 14 is 'Confluence of Visionaries: Empowering Science for Global Change'.
The event has brought together 135 delegates from 60 countries and 65 from across India, creating what the organisers describe as a 'diverse and inclusive forum'.

'National BioBank' holds promise for personalised healthcare for every Indian: Dr Jitendra Singh
The country holds the promise of a future where every Indian may receive individualised treatment tailored to their genetic makeup, lifestyle and environment, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, said on Sunday. He inaugurated the state-of-the-art Phenome India "National Biobank" at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in the capital. The newly-launched facility marks a significant stride towards building India's own longitudinal health database and enabling personalised treatment regimens in future. The Biobank will serve as the backbone of a nationwide cohort study, collecting comprehensive genomic, lifestyle, and clinical data from 10,000 individuals across India. Drawing inspiration from the UK Biobank model, the Indian version is tailored to capture the country's unique diversity—across geography, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds. Researchers believe the initiative will aid early diagnosis, improve therapeutic targeting, and bolster the fight against complex diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular ailments, and rare genetic disorders. Addressing the scientists and researchers at IGIB, Dr Singh said 'This transition to personalised healthcare is no longer theoretical — it is becoming reality, driven by indigenous innovations.' Reflecting on the unique health challenges faced by Indians, he noted the high prevalence of central obesity, a risk factor often underestimated. The minister highlighted past research showing that seemingly lean Indians may carry disproportionate fat around their waist, underlining the need for population-specific health strategies. 'Our conditions are complex and deeply heterogeneous. This is where the Biobank becomes vital—it allows us to decode that complexity,' he said. He emphasised that India's scientific landscape is evolving rapidly, citing recent advances in quantum technology, CRISPR-based genome editing, and the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 'India is no longer lagging behind — we are among the early adopters, sometimes even ahead,' he said. The Biobank, he added, will complement these efforts by generating the kind of high-resolution data that can power AI-driven diagnostics and gene-guided therapies. Dr Singh also called for deeper collaboration between research institutions, government departments like the Department of Biotechnology, and industry partners, particularly in areas such as AMR and drug development. 'Research must extend beyond the lab — it must find takers in the market and beneficiaries in society,' he noted. Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR, commended the launch of the Biobank as a bold step toward India's self-reliance in healthcare data.

India commits second tranche of Rs 10,000 crore to support deep tech: Piyush Goyal
Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has announced a second tranche of Rs 10,000 crore to promote innovation and strengthen the deep tech ecosystem 'We are formulating guidelines to ensure that this money is directed towards promoting innovation, facilitating the absorption of newer technologies, and supporting the development of contemporary technologies,' Goyal said at the sixth edition of IIT Madras and IITM Alumni Association's Sangam 2025 event in current fund, part of the flagship Fund of Funds (FoF) , was first announced by union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget for 2025-26. The scheme was originally launched in 2016 with an initial corpus of Rs 10,000 crore.'The aspirations and dreams of a young country with one of the youngest populations globally are driving R&D, technology, and our startup ecosystem,' he is the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, after the US and China, according to the Economic Survey 2021-22. Goyal also noted that India has moved from being the world's 11th largest economy in 2014 to the fifth-largest today and is expected to become the third-largest by 2027.'New technologies will define India's growth story in the coming years. I am confident that the 60,000-strong IIT Madras alumni network will play a key role in supporting the country's technological advancement,' he added.

Pradhan visits HAL facility in Koraput, CUO
1 2 Koraput: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan began his two-day visit to Koraput district on Saturday with a visit to the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) engine and component manufacturing unit at Sunabeda. Emphasising its strategic importance in national defence, Pradhan called for development of a HAL-based MSME cluster to spur employment and entrepreneurship in the region. He urged HAL to collaborate with IIT Madras and Central University of Odisha (CUO) to offer diploma and undergraduate programmes in aerospace, defenc, and related sectors. "The objective is to develop a skilled workforce with domain expertise and promote innovation from the school level," he said. Pradhan also advised establishment of HAL-sponsored STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) laboratories in schools across Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Rayagada districts. "The laboratories would provide early exposure to scientific disciplines and lay the groundwork for future careers in technology," he said. Later in the day, Pradhan visited CUO campus in Sunabeda, where he inaugurated hostels and staff quarters and laid the foundation stone for an infrastructure project aimed at transforming the institute. A total of Rs 750 crore has been sanctioned for campus development. To elevate the university to global standards, an MoU was signed between six centrally funded higher education institutes in Odisha — CUO, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIM Sambalpur, NIT Rourkela, IISER Berhampur and National Sanskrit University, Puri. Updating the status of academic staff, Pradhan said 70 posts have recently been filled and CUO aims to fill at least 130 out of sanctioned 153 teaching positions in the next year. He also announced that CUO will introduce new diploma and undergraduate courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning and agri-business from the next academic year.
