New Tatkal ticket booking rules effective from today: All you need to know

Indian Express01-07-2025
The Indian Railways has announced new rules for booking Tatkal tickets for passengers, beginning July 1, 2025. Only those users who have authenticated their account using Aadhaar will be able to book tatkal tickets from today.
The new rules will be applied both to online as well as the counter ticket booking systems.
'With effect from 01.07.2025, tickets under tatkal scheme can be booked through the website of Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)/its app only by Aadhaar authenticated users. Subsequently, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication shall also be made compulsory for the tatkal booking from 15.07.2025,' reads the circular issued by the Railway Ministry. The rules for the counter ticketing system will be implemented by July 15, 2025.
The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technological wing of the Indian Railways, and IRCTC were asked to make necessary modification in the system accordingly under intimation to all zonal railways.
Here are the 5 things you need to know about the new rules for booking Tatkal tickets:
Users identified with Aadhaar can book Tatkal tickets using the IRCTC's official website or the mobile app.
According to a senior official from the Ministry of Railways, 'Account holders who link their accounts with Aadhaar will get priority booking during the first 10 minutes of Tatkal ticket sales."
The new rules for Tatkal reservations via online ticket booking system will come into effect from July 1, 2025. Users can book their tickets through the website of Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) or its mobile app.
Starting 15th July 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online as well as through Passenger Reservation Systems (PRS) counters and authorised agents.
The proposal for the e-Aadhaar authentication system is part of the campaign against the use of automated tools to book tickets online.
The new rules will strengthen the Tatkal ticketing process and combat fraud by mandating e-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal reservations.
So far, the railways have deactivated and barred over 24 million users in the last six months, and around 2 million accounts have been marked as suspicious and are being investigated, according to a senior ministry official.
Under the new rules, authorised IRCTC agents are not allowed to book within the first 30 minutes of opening of booking for AC as well as non-AC travel classes.
It means the agents will not be allowed to book tatkal tickets from 10 am to 10.30 am for air-conditioned classes and from 11 am to 11.30 am for non-air conditioned classes.
🔴 The railway board has proposed preparing the reservation chart eight hours before the departure of the train, which would reduce uncertainties for passengers with waitlist tickets, according to a press release by the Ministry of Railways. Currently, the reservation chart is prepared four hours before departure.
🔴 The new upgraded PRS will allow over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, and the ticket enquiry capacity will jump ten times, that is, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiry will be possible in a minute's time, the release highlighted. Within this, users will be able to submit their choice of seat and see the fare calendar. It also has integrated facilities for Divyangjan, students, patients, etc.

Bengaluru dad earning ₹48 LPA hesitates to accept ₹75 LPA job: 'Why slog your a** off, pay double the tax'

A Bengaluru-based techie sparked online debate after sharing how a significant salary hike felt more like a financial trap than a reward. The man, a father of two, who works in Data Science and earns ₹48 lakh annually, was considering a salary hike which would grow his earnings to ₹75 lakh. However, he claimed that the significant rise came with a whopping tax burden. The man claimed that the salary hike may increase his take-home pay by roughly 50% but the tax burden almost doubles.(Pixabay) In a post on Reddit, the man described himself as "middle class," pointing to soaring rents, school fees, and rising household expenses, claiming his high salary was already stretched thin. The Reddit post claimed that the new salary hike may increase his take-home pay by roughly 50% but the tax burden almost doubles from ₹12 lakhs to ₹22 lakhs. "It raises a fundamental question for me: why should I work significantly harder just to pay more to the government, without receiving any additional tangible benefits compared to those who pay little or no tax?" he questioned. After getting criticised for ranting despite his high salary, the Bengaluru resident reiterated his point of view. "Most of the comments are missing the point: Why slog your a** off and pay double the tax to the government, when you do not get any additional benefits from the government compared to a non-taxpayer? Does it not rile you all internally?" he remarked. However, some Reddit users were unbothered by his complaints. "I can't answer your question sir but I can sure question your thinking of tagging r/middleclass in your post while earning approx 50 LPA it's far from being middle class," said one of them. Another suggested, "Why not negotiate with your employer to hire you as a contractor and find avenues to lessen your tax outgo legally?"

Elon Musk's Starlink can give only 20 lakh connections, offer up to 200 Mbps speed pan-India. Know why

Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said Billionaire Elon Musk's satellite communications company, Starlink, can only have 20 lakh connections in India amid the competitive threat to the state-owned BSNL and other telecom operators, reported news agency PTI on Monday, 28 July 2025. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications, also said that the US-based satellite internet provider will be able to offer up to 200 Mbps of internet speed, which the government believes will not affect other telecom operators. 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services,' Minister Pemmasani told the news agency on the sidelines of a BSNL review meeting. The company's satellite internet services are expected to target customers in the rural and remote areas of India, which is also a big market for the state-owned telecom service provider BSNL. Minister Pemmasani also said that the upfront cost for the satcom service will be too high, and the monthly cost will likely be around ₹ 3,000. According to the report, Pemmasani also said that BSNL's 4G network rollout is completed, and the government-owned telecom provider does not plan to increase its network tariffs at this time. 'We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,' the minister told the news agency. According to the official website, the eStarlink network is the world's first and largest satellite internet provider. The technology uses Earth's lower orbit to deliver broadband (Wi-Fi) internet to its users. People can use this broadband network to support streaming, online gaming, and video calling by accessing the satellite network through their home setup or portable Starlink equipment. Billionaire founder Elon Musk's space tech startup SpaceX owns and controls Starlink's operations worldwide. Mint reported earlier that Starlink aims to address connectivity issues in rural and remote regions of India and expand the domestic telecom industry with its satellite technology.
