Cowboys may have stumbled into a superstar as a second-round pick angles toward starting
The Dallas Cowboys needed help at defensive end for the 2025 season. Facing the loss of long-time starter and multiple-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Lawrence, the team needed reinforcements. The club had drafted the position, highly, but had yet to reap any dominating rewards. So when the opportunity presented itself to secure themselves the potential steal of the 2025 draft, they jumped on it Dallas secured the services of perhaps the best pass-rushing defensive end of the draft when they drafted Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku. But pre-draft accolades don't matter if it doesn't manifest itself on a pro field, and while training camp isn't the real thing, what Ezeiruaku has shown in Oxnard has a lot of people extremely excited. Rundown Position: Defensive End Age: 21 Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 248 pounds Hometown: Williamstown, NJ High School: Williamstown College: Boston College (Highlights) Draft: 2025 Second Round (No. 44 overall) Acquired: 2025 draft Contract: Four-year contract (2025), $10.2 million 2025 Base Salary: $840,000, $1.85 million cap hit Profile With Micah Parsons not participating in practice due to his contract dispute, Ezeiruaku has been declaring himself as a true force to reckon with. Lining up primarily as a left defensive end, Ezeiruaku has shown a complex rush attack that is far beyond his years. He's also displayed the ability to set the edge, looking like he's ready to take on a starting role sooner rather than later. Dallas brought back Dante Fowler, who left for a season in Washington, and the expectation was that he'd be starting opposite Parsons, but that may not be the case and if it is may not be for long. The Cowboys also signed Payton Turner, a former first-round pick like Fowler, as veteran depth. They join last year's second rounder Marshawn Kneeland as Parsons' supporting cast. That's before mentioning 2022 second-round pick Sam Williams, who is looking to return from an ACL injury. Together, the Cowboys have assembled a tremendously pedigreed group at defensive end, but Ezeiruaku looks like a potential breakout star amongst the room. NFLPA elects David White to serve as interim executive director after Lloyd Howell's resignation
The NFLPA has finally elected an interim replacement for Lloyd Howell. The union announced late on Sunday night that it had elected David White to serve as the new interim executive director. White will replace Howell, who resigned last month amid a scandal that rocked the union. White was a finalist for the role in 2023. He is the former national executive director and chief negotiator of the Screen Actors Guild. He's also the CEO of 3CG, and is the board chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. 'I am grateful to the NFLPA's player leadership for entrusting me with the privilege and responsibility to guide their union as interim executive director,' White said in a statement. 'It's a duty I do not take lightly, and I'm committed to re-establishing trust and ensuring the union is serving its members best. 'I look forward to working with the entire NFLPA team to prospect players' health and safety, secure their financial well-being and further strengthen their voice to shape their futures.' Rob Pelinka talks about the Lakers' offseason additions
The Los Angeles Lakers achieved their most important objective this offseason when they got Luka Doncic to agree to a three-year contract extension on Saturday. Saturday was the first day he was eligible to sign an extension, and this move will ensure that he will remain a member of the team past this coming season. One can now say the Lakers have had a very solid and successful offseason. They previously addressed their gaping hole at the center position by signing Deandre Ayton, and they also brought in young and promising forward Jake LaRavia and former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. At Saturday's press conference to announce Doncic's extension, general manager Rob Pelinka implied that the Lakers would like to make at least one more move. However, he seemed pleased with the moves that have been made. 'It's the centerpiece of the foundation piece,' Pelinka said of building around Doncic. 'I think in conversations with Luka, it was really important for us to get a rim, lob-catching center and we feel like getting Deandre Ayton was huge. It's gonna unlock so much in Luka's game, as you can tell with pick-and-roll reads, he's the best in the world and I think Deandre is gonna help. Our thesis for our roster was to get younger, and I think getting some 3-and-D players like a Jake LaRavia who we could add, at his age, 42% 3-point shooter and having wings that can shoot and play both sides of the ball I think is also important. And then being able to add Marcus Smart, Defensive Player of the Year a couple years ago, I think he has a chip on his shoulder to get back to that level and put the league on notice. 'I think having players like that surrounding both Luka and LeBron, guys that can defend multiple positions, is really important. So we like the upgrades we were able to make to the roster, but by no means are we gonna be satisfied. I think every year, we're on an infinite cycle to try to improve this team to win championships and we'll stay committed to that work.' Ayton could be close to the ideal center to pair with Doncic, at least offensively. He's a definite lob threat who has a nice touch around the basket, as well as a low-post game and the ability to hit jumpers out to just beyond 15 feet or so. Ayton is also a good rebounder who will help Los Angeles on the boards, an area in which it has been weak for the last couple of seasons. LaRavia is a dead-eye 3-point shooter who seems to have some upward potential on the defensive end. Speaking of the defensive end, Smart has been one of the NBA's best in that department for years, and he could be poised for a return to form after a couple of injury-riddled seasons. The team has the expiring contracts of Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber, as well as one future first-round draft to offer in a trade between now and the February trade deadline. It could also look to flip forward Rui Hachimura or even guard Austin Reaves if it chooses to do so. The Lakers may not be true championship contenders, but they're close, and they could surprise people this season.
