British tourist killed and their partner is seriously ill after falling from jet ski they were riding in the sea off Albania
A British tourist has died while another is in critical condition after jet-skiing in Albania.
The 34-year-old man was confirmed dead by coastguards, who believe he lost control of the machine and came off his water scooter.
A 31-year-old woman was also seriously injured and remains in critical condition in hospital.
The holidaymakers were testing 'maneuvers' near the Kavaja Rock area in Durres when they fell into the water yesterday morning, it was reported in local media.
An investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances of the tragic accident.
The pair are yet to be publicly identified but have had their initials shared by the police - the man was S.O. and the woman was V.B.
The police said: 'Around 11:15, on 01.06.2025, the Port Durres Border Police services were notified that, in the area opposite the Kavaja Rock, two citizens who were sailing on a Jet Ski, are suspected of having lost control of the vessel during maneuvers and fallen into the water.
'The Border Police Services, after receiving the notification, immediately went by watercraft to assist the two citizens who had fallen into the water, transporting them to the port, with the aim of transporting them to the hospital.
'Preliminary verifications by the hospital emergency team, which was waiting at the port, resulted in one of the citizens sailing on the Jet Ski, specifically citizen SO, 34 years old, resident in England, having lost his life, while citizen VB, 31 years old, resident in England, was immediately transported to the hospital in serious condition.
'A special investigative group was immediately established and, under the direction of the Prosecutor's Office, work continues to clarify the circumstances and legally document the case.'
However, several outlets had reported at the time the pair were discovered 'during a random patrol' with the vehicle's engine turned off.
They added that that it was possible to pair were suffering from hypothermia after they had been at sea for an unknown number of hours, according to information from the port.
Another site has reported that the couple were from Ghana but lived in England.
The horrifying incident comes only weeks after another British tourist ran in to trouble on a jet ski while in Thailand.
Vincent Zammitt, 26, from London, was arrested and fined for allegedly sinking a jet ski off the coast of Phuketin April after he rented the machine for a 30-minute ride.
He said he was allowed to set sail into the idyllic turquoise waters, despite the jet ski not undergoing maintenance checks.
The holidaymaker was carving up water when the jet ski's warning lights reportedly went off 15 minutes into the ride.
The alarmed holidaymaker steered the watercraft back to shore but it capsized, leaving him stranded at sea in shark-infested waters.
A rescue team was called to the scene after he failed to return to the beach after 30 minutes.
Footage shows volunteers arriving on jet skis to save Mr Zammitt, seen wearing a life vest as he sat on the overturned machine.
But Mr Zammitt is convinced that the rental company set him up with a dodgy jet ski to fleece him - and that the police were in on it too.
Phuket is among Thailand's most popular tourist destinations known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife.
However, it is also a notorious enclave of criminal activity, with greedy locals taking advantage of naive visitors.
Jet ski scams have become a notorious money spinner for locals, with rental companies working in cahoots with a few apparently corrupt police to extort vast sums from holiday makers for non-existent damage to the machines.

Holiday tragedy as British tourist falls to his death at Majorcan beauty spot cliff alongside partner who survived accident
Tributes have been paid to a British tourist who died after a late-night fall on to rocks near a Majorcan beauty spot beach. Ben Clark, 41, was killed after the 15ft plunge from a wall in the early hours of Friday. Sources said his partner had also fallen from the same spot and been knocked unconscious before coming to and going to a nearby hotel to raise the alarm. Friends of Mr Clark, who described himself on Facebook as a self-employed carpenter from Andover in Hampshire, called him 'one of the good ones'. And one of his daughters wrote on social media: 'Love you forever dad.' Friends also described him as a 'great guy' as they spoke of their shock at learning the news, with one telling of feeling 'completely gutted' following the tragedy. Becky Paris said: 'Honestly I just spent the majority of the evening blabbering on about how "it's the kind of thing you read about in the newspapers, but think well it wouldn't ever happen' as it wasn't real life. 'Today I am just absolutely heartbroken for you and your little family. 'No words that could make sense of it. You really were one of the good ones mate.' Peter Fordham added: 'RIP Ben Clark. Devastating news and a sad loss. 'You will be massively missed. Condolences to all your friends and family.' Glenn Quackenbush wrote on social media: 'Farewell to great guy Mr Ben Clark. It was an honour RIP.' And Chris Jon Osman told his daughter who had shared her own tribute online: 'Couldn't be more gutted for you, love to all your family.' 'His memory will live on through the many peoples' lives that he lit up. He was a great guy and a true legend.' Police said firefighters had helped them recover the body of an unnamed British man. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Majorca said on Friday afternoon: 'We received an emergency alert just before 2am this morning, saying a man had fallen from a height of around 15ft in a rocky area in Cala Agulla near to Capdepera and had possibly died. 'The Civil Guard's specialist Greim mountain and cave rescue unit was mobilised. The man's body was recovered just after 5am. 'A full report has yet to be drafted by the Greim unit and an autopsy will take place. But everything at this stage is pointing to the victim dying as a result of an accidental fall.' Mr Clark is believed to have been with his partner who survived before going to raise the alarm at the Club Cala Rajada Hotel. An island newspaper has reported the fall happened in an area popular with tourists who visit the beauty spot to take in its picturesque sunsets. Mr Clark, who is thought to have been father to a grown-up daughter aged about 20 as well as a younger child, had been joking with a friend on Facebook the day before losing his life. The contact, commenting on the last photo Mr Clark posted online from Majorca late on Thursday showing him appearing redder than normal, said: 'Looking a bit serious Ben lol x' - prompting Mr Clark to respond: 'And burnt.' When the friend asked, 'Where's your sun protection then LOL', he replied: 'In the hand luggage.' Cala Agulla is a large and white sand beach in the north-east of Majorca, a short drive from Capdepera. It is surrounded by sand dunes, pine trees, desert plants and low-lying rocky areas which form the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park. Last month a British woman, 39, died after plunging from a scenic beauty spot in Majorca. She fell about 60ft from a lookout point in the Palma neighbourhood of El Jonquet overlooking the sea. Police and paramedics who responded to an emergency call stabilised her at the scene before putting a 'Green Alert' in place to make sure she got to hospital as quickly as possible by clearing traffic for the ambulance transporting her. Police confirmed after the May 19 tragedy they were not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened and the death was not being treated as a crime.

Girl, seven, killed after tree collapses in Essex park
A seven-year-old girl has died and a six-year-old girl is in a critical condition after a tree collapsed in an Essex park. Three more children received minor injuries and received hospital treatment after the tree fell in Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea, shortly before 3pm on Saturday. Advertisement Dozens saw the incident and rushed to try and lift the tree, a witness said. Accountant Ishan Madan, 39, from Westcliff-on-Sea, was playing in a cricket match nearby when he heard a 'horrendous, screeching scream'. He said: 'Everyone ran towards the clubhouse, where the tree is. 'The tree had snapped and I think there were four children, the fifth one was slightly further away, I think she'd be hit by a branch. Advertisement 'Two of them were under a smaller branch, they were rescued easily, and unfortunately, the other two girls, they were stuck under this massive tree. 'So we got bystanders to help, it must have been 40 to 50 people who then tried to lift the fallen tree up and to our horror, these two little girls, poor girls, were stuck underneath it. 'Their mother was on the corner. It was horrendous.' Mr Madan said that he had heard the children were walking on a path when the tree fell. Advertisement He continued: 'You'd never think something like this could happen and there were a lot of people at our club that were shocked, including myself. 'It was horrendous. It was like a nightmare that you'd sort of wake up from and then someone would tell you it wasn't true. You couldn't imagine kids walking in the park and something like this happening.' Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett of Essex Police said: 'Families are facing unimaginable hardship this evening and all of our thoughts are with them at this time. 'I cannot begin to put into words how difficult today's events have been, and continue to be, for them. Advertisement 'It's also not lost on me how traumatic it must have been for the members of the public who witnessed this awful incident. 'Across a matter of moments, many of them went from enjoying the warm summer weather to rushing to the aid of strangers without a second thought. 'They showed the best of Southend today and I'm sorry this update does not bring them more positive news. 'My officers, and our partners with the ambulance and fire service, did all they could to help the two injured children. Advertisement 'Today's loss is one they will all take personally.' An investigation is ongoing to find out what happened. MP for Southend West and Leigh, David Burton-Sampson, said: 'The news of the sad death of one of the children involved in the incident at Chalkwell Park today is truly devastating. 'I am sure I reflect the thoughts of all our residents here in Southend in sending my deepest condolences to the child's family and friends. 'My thoughts are also with the other children injured and I wish them a full and speedy recovery. 'At the time of the incident, the park was very busy and a number of people witnessed what happened.'
