Azealia Banks cancels UK festivals with claims she was pressured to 'support Pal
Azealia Banks has announced that she will no longer be performing Boomtown of Maiden Voyage after 'dealing with threats' from organisers.
The controversial American rapper, 34, took to social media to claim that she was being forced to say she supports Palestine or be cut from the lineup, a claim the promoters deny.
Taking to X, the 212 singer told her fans: 'So guys, I am cancelling Boomtown and Maiden Voyage.
'The promoters have been stressing me out for weeks trying to force me to say free Palestine and threatening to cut me from the bill because I won't say free Palestine and I'm not dealing with the threats and I'm not putting on a f***ing hijab.
She added: 'I would much rather drop them and not associate with anything that has cheap group think bull***t attached to it.
'If they want to allow some no-name dj's to bully them into desecrating the nature of this music ecosystem and make ME the issue – whilst there being absolutely no ethical consumption under capitalism. Then that's fine.
She clarified her stance in a following tweet that read: 'And no, I'm not saying f**k actual Palestine. But f**k your dumb a** slogans and performative bulls**t. Y'all wanna make a stance so bad but stand for absolutely nothing.'
She continued to share various messages to her fans on social media, taking aim at organisers and performative Palestine supporters.
Boomtown confirmed in a statement to Metro that they have not, and would not, dictate the beliefs of performers.
'Following her post on X in the early hours of this morning, we can confirm that Azealia Banks has withdrawn from the lineup and will no longer be performing at Boomtown Festival.
'For clarity, Boomtown does not and will never dictate the personal views and beliefs of performers,' a spokesperson said.
The festival announced in January 2024 that it would be fundraising for Medical Aid for Palestinians, and an optional donation was put on all ticket purchases.
The festival is set to take place from August 6 to August 10 at the Matterly Estate, Hampshire. Maiden Voyage Festival will take place on August 9 in Burgess Park, London.
The change in lineup comes just weeks after Banks took to social media to claim that she was a Zionist.
'It should all be Israel. Palestine cannot support itself without help from other countries so the people should just leave or become naturalised Israelis,' she shared on X.
'Palestine is not a country. The area is called JUDEA for a reason.'
The star has become known for her controversial comments, and throughout her career has been accused of homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia towards a variety of different nationalities.
Notably, the star has shared a number of rants on X and Instagram, taking aim at various celebrities including Zayn Malik, Skai Jackson, and Kanye West. More Trending
In 2016, she filed a police report against Russell Crowe after falling out during a hotel suite party.
She also found herself at the centre of controversy in 2021 when she posted a video on Instagram of her exhuming the remains and collecting the bones of her dead cat, Lucifer.
Metro has reached out to Maiden Voyage Festival for comment.

Inside Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's £48m wedding as guests leave early
Branded by some as the 'wedding of the century', Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his new wife Lauren Sanchez splashed out £48million on their big day - small change to the man worth £180 billion Amazon founder Jeff Bezos married his partner of eight years Lauren Sanchez yesterday, with the pair saying their 'I dos' in a £48million star-studded ceremony. Despite threats and protests by anti-capitalists and locals, the day went ahead - although some famous faces didn't hang about, opting for an early dart. The 25-minute wedding ceremony saw the pair exchange vows in front of around 200 guests, including a number of high-profile celebrities. In attendance were the Kardashian-Jenners, Orlando Bloom and Oprah Winfrey, as well as Ivanka Trump and her family. Rania Al Abdullah, the Queen of Jordan also watched on, as did supermodels, actors and business-people. Guests were welcomed by a gospel choir, with the singers performing a rendition of Whitney Houston's Higher Love as the bride and groom entered. Most guests partied well into the early hours of Saturday, but some celebs slipped away early. Kim and Khloe Kardashian left the do early and had already left the country by the time some of the other guests woke up, having being spotted at Venice airport early on Saturday morning. The remaining guests will be celebrating once again on Saturday, when another party is expected to mark what is being described as the 'wedding of the century'. Some of the freebies handed out to guests raised eyebrows though, with Lauren's gift to her party branded "shameless". Jeff kept his favours fancy, giving his male guests ViBi Venezia blue velvet slippers. But Sanchez partook in some shameless marketing, handing out black open-toe slippers from Amazon, promoting the business empire that made her now-husband a billionaire. But while she may have scrimped slightly on the guest's slippers, she made sure no expense was spared for her own attire - donning no less than three dresses for the day. Her wedding gown for the main event was a Dolce & Gabbana number, which reportedly took more the 900 hours to make. The long-sleeved gown had a corseted waist and turtle-neck design, with a mermaid-style skirt. The sophisticated gown boasted 180 hand-finished buttons, covered in silk chiffon, which trailed all the way down the train of the gown. To welcome guests to the wedding reception, legendary singer Andrea Bocelli's son Matteo performed. He belted out a version of Elvis Presley's song I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. Despite their wedding taking place in Venice with their celebrity pals and family, their legal wedding actually took place weeks ago. According to a well-placed insider involved in the event planning, they said: 'They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law.' Although this week's events have been billed as the wedding, the source added it's for show. They said: 'When they were planning the wedding, they were clear about the fact that they were already secretly married." Because the legal marriage has already occurred, there was no need for a license in Italy. 'There is no application for a wedding licence from the couple because it was not required. Whatever happens at the wedding on Friday, it will not be a wedding. "Under Italian law, it will not be a wedding celebration, any vows said or rings exchanged will have no legal meaning," they told Mail Online. The same source added that Bezos himself confirmed the legal union and noted the pair had arranged a prenuptial agreement to safeguard his $244 billion fortune. Bezos and Sánchez reportedly married privately in the U.S., well before the high-profile Venetian celebration began.

Barkada is back in a new home in Soho
Back in mid-May, the news dropped that popular modern Filipino restaurant Barkada was closing its doors. Luckily, they also announced in the same breath that it wasn't for good and they were simply looking to move somewhere with a more affordable rent. It's now been confirmed that Barkada has found a new home – and still in Central, no less. They've just moved up the hill to Soho, next to Holy Eats, and while the new venue is definitely smaller than their FOCO Building location, it does mean that diners will finally be able to feel cool without the patio doors and fold-out windows letting out all the precious air conditioning! The restaurant is also revamping their menu direction to a 'Filipino heart, New York edge' concept, so we can probably expect some American-inflected offerings. (No worries, we're told their lumpia and spicy coconut noodles are still around.) The new Barkada is now in their soft-launch period, and diners can enjoy 15 percent off their bill and BYOB until July 14. For now, they are open from 6pm to 10pm on Wednesday, Thursdays, and Sundays; 6pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays; and closed on Mondays to Tuesdays. Find Barkada at 25 Elgin Street, Soho.

ITV Coronation Street issues ‘be vigilant' warning to soap fans using social med
Coronation Street has issued warnings to fans in a social media statement. It has become known to people behind the scenes at the soap that fans are falling victim to another type of scam. Back at the start of this year, both Corrie and Emmerdale accounts shared on social media platform X that scammers were pretending to be stars from the shows. The statement said: 'Please be aware that actors from both Coronation Street and Emmerdale are currently being impersonated by scammers across all social media platforms. 'No cast member will ever directly request money for messages, meetings or any kind of personal interaction on social media. 'We are aware these sophisticated impersonations can include deep-fake footage (where it appears to be the actor talking but isn't) and personal messages which seem to be realistic and in character. We urge everybody to be vigilant. Please report any concerns to the relevant platform.' They concluded: 'The legitimate way of meeting with real members of the cast is via official 'meet and greet' events run by ITV Star Tours.' This time, audience members are being targeted by con artists pretending to be from the Coronation Street casting department – claiming to offer them a part in their favourite soap. Metro understands that fans of Emmerdale have been approached too. To warn people about the cruel trick, the Corrie X account once again shared a message online, this time saying: 'We are aware that there are some accounts impersonating the Casting department at Coronation Street on social media platforms. 'Our Casting team only uses official methods of communication, this does not involve direct messages on Twitter or any other social media. 'Please be careful when communicating online and report any concerns to the relevant platform.' This comes after Emmerdale favourite Lisa Riley told her fans not to believe AI bots pretending to be her online. The actress, 48, is best known for her role as Mandy Dingle, said on Instagram: 'Hello everybody, it's Lisa here. Now, I have to keep reiterating this, please, and please listen.' 'If something is not on my page – and my page is blue-ticked – then it is not real,' she stated, referencing the social media network's notable person verification system. 'It is AI pretending to be me, and there is nothing I can do about it. It's a hoax, it's a scam and it's a lie. 'So please, I'm begging you, don't click on it, don't believe it, don't read it, don't give it any attention. It's not true. More Trending 'I have to keep reiterating this because I am inundated with people saying that I'm attached to things that I'm not. So please, if it's not on my page, it's not real and I have not endorsed anything of that like.' She concluded: 'Listen to what I'm saying, and don't take it as the truth because it's not. From me to you, I'm so sorry that it's going on because it's not real and I have to keep telling you guys this. 'But just don't believe it. It's a hoax and a scam. It's not the truth, thank you for listening.' View More » This article was originally published on 17th June 2025.
