No value is good or bad, she says; they're only a problem when we don't acknowledge and live by the ones we care the most about.
'We come loaded with personal values in a certain ranking, and yet, 99.9 percent of us are not fully expressing the values we hold,' said Welch, 65, a Harvard Business School grad, known for her columns, 'Today' show appearances, books such as '

There are obstacles, of course. Welch devotes a section of the book to 'The Four Horsemen of Values Destruction,' what she calls the roadblocks that stop us from staying true to what we want. More on that later, too.
Welch happened to be unfurling her 'Becoming You' classes as people came out of COVID lockdown, questioning why they made certain choices. They were introspective and ready to do some work.

A month ago, I bought a bike. I'd realized, after a few vacations, that I enjoy biking on a safe and scenic path. The other day, I rode my brand new bike in great weather; I felt like I was 6 years old, with no cares in the world.
I was shocked at how free — and

— I felt on this bike.
Later, I felt guilty. Who was I to be running around — on a Wednesday! — on this bike? How dare I not be working or helping my loved ones?

Welch's book and method had an answer for that. After taking Welch's questionnaire, I learned a big, maybe simple thing: I value free time and fun activities more than I've ever admitted to myself. I would have guessed my one major value was 'workcentrism,' perhaps followed by what she calls 'familycentricism,' but the latter wasn't even in my top five.
Welch said people are often surprised by their results.
'They're staring into the face of something they've been denying or repressing. … The phrase I hear the most is, '
This explains everything
.''
During our interview, Welch told me I might have been lying to myself about prioritizing my family — perhaps in martyr-ish ways — without making me feel like a jerk. She is good at talking about uncomfortable things.
Her style, to me, is a mix of CEO, journalist, influencer, friend, or 'fancy aunt who does not put up with your nonsense.' She shares personal stories and moments when she admits she was a bad mom or scared about her life choices.
I attended two Welch events during her recent visit to Boston, including one at MIT, where she spoke to a mostly student audience, some of whom seemed very freaked out about their career prospects amid federal budget cuts.
Welch was quick to talk about her own mistakes. She quoted 'Moonstruck' and referenced 'The Iliad.' She spoke about waiting out fraught moments in economic and political history, and acknowledged that many people are in one, so they might as well be honest about what they want.
In the audience was Abby Witkin, a longtime Welch fan, who held a copy of '10-10-10,' Welch's guide to decision making.

'I was like, what a perfect thing to do for my birthday — go into a class where you're actually looking at the intersection of all of these [values], and you're trying to find your area of transcendence.'
Witkin said she always knew she really liked work

but the program helped her accept that it was OK to love it more than a lot of other things.
'[Suzy] doesn't call it workaholism. It doesn't have a negative connotation.'
I'm still diving into all of this, especially Welch's ideas about those Horsemen that stand in the way of us living our values (my issues are all about a fear of economic instability).
I know this is all very self-helpy, but in Welch's words, she wants us in an area of transcendence.
I get glimmers of it when I'm writing, and absolutely when I'm on that bike.
'Look, you can go through periods of your life where it completely ebbs away from you — because life happens. You get a divorce, you get fired. … But then, if you know this stuff about yourself, and you know what the picture of your authentic life is, you can fight another day,' she said. 'But those moments when you're living authentically — that is when you're very
exquisitely alive, that's your purpose
— and they're worth fighting for. It's worth doing."

Thai pop star comes out: 'I'm 100% WLW' and fans are living for it

Pimnara Rumruaymunkong, aka Latin in the Thai girl group CGM48, has confirmed she's a lesbian ahead of leaving the band. Over the weekend, a fan asked her on Instagram if she was a woman who loves women (WLW) or bisexual. She answered the post by saying she was '100% wuhluhwuh,' or WLW. Underneath, she wrote, 'i'm gay gurrrrrrrrl.' — (@) Fans were quick to react to the post, though some weren't surprised by the news following a since-deleted TikTok post in November, where Latin used a trending filter called 'Do I look like a Lesbian?' and fans noted that she did. — (@) Whether a surprise or not, fans quickly embraced the news. 'SUCH A WIN,' wrote one fan, while another referred to Latin simply as 'mother.' — (@) Formed in 2019, CGM48 is the first domestic sister of the Thai group BNK48 and is named after Chiang Mai, a Northern Thailand city where they're based. They're also part of a broader international organization based on Japan's AKB48. In these groups, trainees go through an audition program (think American Idol or The Voice). After a period of popularity or activity, a member "graduates" and is usually replaced by another trainee. The graduation process usually involves a formal ceremony, and could have a song or concert dedicated to the members depending on their popularity. Latin announced her upcoming graduation from CGM48 Team C in August a few weeks ago, with her last activity scheduled for August 24. Since CGM48 partakes in an 'idols you can meet' model that heavily leans on engagement from fans, the idols usually have to maintain a clean and neutral image. Popularity among the fans matters, and it's common for groups to change members and continue on. See on Instagram Latin's departure from the group could have played a role in her decision to come out. She's also part of a growing number of Asian artists coming out, including K-pop star Bain from JUST B in April 2025 and Katseye's Lara Rajagopalan in March 2025. In general, Thailand is considered to be one of the more friendly nations toward the LGBTQ+ community, though same-sex marriage wasn't legalized until January 2025. Either way, welcome to the fam, Latin! See you on the other side of idol life. This article originally appeared on Pride: Thai pop star comes out: 'I'm 100% WLW' and fans are living for it

‘We went through it': Billy Bush recalls how big celeb interview in Miami went south

Of all the celebrities Billy Bush has interviewed over the years, one 'uncomfortable situation' stands out. And it's not regarding the person you may think, Donald Trump, he told Rob Lowe on his 'Literally' podcast on July 10. The TV personality was infamously fired from 'Today' in 2016 after audio resurfaced of him laughing with the then 'Apprentice' star, who made sexually charged comments on a bus more than a decade before. Despite Bush's career being thrown into turmoil after the scandal, he told Lowe one of his most awkward interviews wasn't with the leader of the free world, but with Latin pop icon Ricky Martin. Though he didn't specify the year, he said around the 36-minute mark he was working in the early aughts on 'Access Hollywood' as East Coast correspondent. He was assigned to fly to Miami to talk to the heartthrob who was still basking in his 1999 hit 'Livin' La Vida Loca,' about a new album. The night before, Bush told Lowe he asked a bunch of women in his hotel bar the question they would want posed to the former Menudo singer. The consensus: Was the rumor true that Martin was gay. After consulting with his producer, Bush decided to go for it. 'Bush, man,' Lowe said, disappointed. 'Bush, man.' 'Don't scold me,' Bush answered, recounting that when he asked Martin about his sexuality, he immediately tensed up. Bush said Martin cursed him out, telling him he was 'a piece of garbage' for trying to make headlines after Barbara Walters had already tried to get the hot tea (unsuccessfully) in 2000. Bush then revealed that Martin ripped off his microphone and stormed off the set, and he felt terrible. 'He was legitimately hurt, and I'm not in the business of hurting people,' said the native New Yorker who then went to Martin's dressing room and apologized for the 'inappropriate' question. 'I'm like, 'Ricky, I am so sorry for asking that question. I don't know what I was thinking.' It was a cowboy question,' said Bush, who had that part of the footage destroyed. Martin apparently responded in a thoughtful way, telling Bush that despite 'struggling' with his sexuality his whole life, he didn't feel comfortable coming out while promoting a project. 'We went through it,' said the TV personality. 'I learned a valuable lesson that day: Don't be an a--hole, don't be an idiot.' Martin, now a single father to three, eventually came out on his website in March 2010. 'I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man,' the native Puerto Rican wrote. 'I am very blessed to be who I am.' As for Bush, he was in the crosshairs for many years over the Trump hot mic fallout, ultimately landing back in the spotlight on 'Extra' for five years until May. The divorced father of three is now devoting his time to interviewing headline makers for his 'Hot Mics' podcast. Through his reps, Bush cited the reason for moving on was that he was 'hungrier and more stimulated' than at any point in his professional career. 'It's now time to build something of my own,' the statement said. 'I'm forever grateful to the amazing staff at 'Extra' and the executives at Warner Bros. for this awesome chapter of my life. I mean every word of that. I have had a tremendous run.'
