
Schoolhouse transformed into two homes is for sale with a price tag of £130,000 - but there's a catch
The former schoolhouse near Worcester is on the market as a pair of semi-detached homes for £130,000.
The first - ironically titled Number 2 - boasts of a canopy porch, hallways, reception room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms.
While the second - also known as Number 3 - has a reception room, kitchen area, hall, shower room and three bedrooms, as well as a garden space.
Beyond that, both homes offer little else.
Exposed floorboards, peeling wallpaper, and a partly gutted kitchen have been put on offer as what can only be described as a fixer-upper.
Stairs with the carpet notably ripped up and water stained cupboards were also on show.
The sales brochure admitted that both 'are in need of improvement works throughout' but did have electric heating and double glazing.
Jonathan Hackett, consultant director at Bond Wolfe, told Worcester News: 'These two vacant, semi-detached homes were the result of the conversion of an old schoolhouse some years ago.
'Number 2 has a canopy porch, hall, reception room, inner hall, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom with a shower on the ground floor, with a landing and second bedroom upstairs.
'Number 3 has an entrance hall, shower room with toilet, inner hall, reception room and dining kitchen on the ground floor, with a landing and three bedrooms upstairs.
'There are gardens outside, plus the properties have electric heating and double-glazing, however they are in need of improvement works throughout.'
The Acton Green property is on auction May 15.
It comes less than a week after another unusual abode came on the market in Swanage, Dorset.
A former police station was put up for sale for £1.2million with its original front desk and charge rooms as well as a series of cells with wooden beds.
In the listing for the property, estate agents have described it as an 'excellent redevelopment site' with planning permission to convert it into three three-bed flats and three four-bed homes.
The listing goes on to say: 'The property is situated on a prominent site about one third of a mile level distance from the town centre and beach.
'Swanage lies at the Eastern tip of the Isle of Purbeck, delightfully situated between the Purbeck Hills.
'It has a fine, safe, sandy beach, and is an attractive mixture of old stone cottages and more modern properties, all of which blend in well with the peaceful surroundings.
'To the South is Durlston Country Park renowned for being the gateway to the Jurassic Coast and World Heritage Coastline.'
This station joins a list of odd things which have gone up for sale and it is far from the most unusual thing up for grabs.
As previously reported, a Cold War-era former observation bunker on the edge of the royal estate at Sandringham in Norfolk went up for auction last month.
The Dersingham Royal Observer Corps post was once part of a large network of observation posts up and down the country which were constructed as part of an early warning system to detect impending nuclear attacks and calculate their impact.
The Dersingham post is buried in the land on the north-east side of Chalk Pit Road and has been well-preserved.
The site was built in 1957 and has two components: a concrete orlit hut above ground and a hidden bunker underground.
Both structures were completed due to the heightened threat of nuclear war at the time.

Contract for £55m high school extension and renovation works awarded
A £55m contract has been awarded for renovation works and the construction of a new building at an Edinburgh high school. Belfast-based construction firm McLaughlin & Harvey has been contracted to build the extension to Trinity Academy in Leith and refurbish an existing Victorian building. Plans to renovate and expand the school have been ongoing for several years, with the first stage of the project – involving a new sports and recreation facility – opening in 2022. A ward councillor has said she is 'really pleased' with the planned improvements, and that she looks forward to the public space on the site that will be open to the community. The expansion of Trinity Academy, which is fed by three primary schools, will expand its capacity from 950 to 1,200. A planning application for the school's redevelopment was submitted by the council in October 2023. The original red sandstone Victorian building at the western end of the school, built in 1894, will be retained and undergo refurbishment. Meanwhile, several of the other structures on the site, built after the original building, will be demolished A new four-storey extension to the original building will be built in their place, with a red brick and metal exterior. Both the extension and the sports facility have been designed by architecture firm Holmes Miller, which has designed several primary schools in the city. LDRS Trinity Academy development Green councillor Kayleigh Kinross-O'Neill, who represents Forth ward, said: 'We're really pleased to see the next step of Trinity's expansion go ahead, as I know most parents and teachers are too. 'I'm especially looking forward to seeing the outdoor learning facilities and other wellbeing features that can be used by the wider community.' The works will be carried out in phases in order to allow teaching to continue while the works are under way. A temporary teaching space will be built to the south of the school, first allowing the teaching in two of the newer buildings on the site to be moved there. They will then be demolished, and the extension will be built in their place. The teaching in the two demolished blocks will then be moved back into the extension, and the teaching in the Victorian-era building will be moved out for it to be refurbished. Once the refurbishment is complete, all teaching will be returned to the new and refurbished parts of the site, and the three remaining buildings in the east of the site will be demolished, to be replaced with an outdoor space. The outdoor design at the site will integrate Trinity Academy's grounds with those of Trinity Primary, creating a unified campus within the community. The open space would be open to the public and feature outdoor teaching areas. Passivhaus standards were used in the design of the extension, which aims to keep the temperature of the buildings comfortable while using as little energy as possible. Builders McLaughlin & Harvey were also contracted to build the Wester Hailes High School, which is set to be completed in late 2026. Elsewhere in the city, they have built several structures for the University of Edinburgh, including the Nucleus student hub and a new building for the School of Engineering at the university's King's Buildings site. Between 2018 and 2022, the firm's waste subsidiary was locked in a legal battle with Revenue Scotland over landfill taxes. Barr Environmental Ltd operated two landfills in Scotland, including one in Ayrshire, as well as a plant to recycle waste. In 2021, Revenue Scotland slapped the firm with a £99m fine, saying it had wrongfully not paid landfill tax on materials recycled from the Ayrshire landfill to build walls on site. The company said that, because the materials were recycled, they should be exempt from the landfill tax. Recycling waste through their recycling plant was part of the firm's business model in the waste processing space, with the hope it would drive costs down for its local authority clients. A lower tribunal found against the firm, but Barr appealed to the Upper Tribunal and won, with a tribunal judge saying that 'there is nothing wrong with principle' with what the company did. Barr no longer operates waste facilities in Scotland, having pulled out of the sector ahead of the impending landfill ban. The contract was closed on March 19 and published on June 27. Ban on ‘exploitative' zero-hours contracts to come into effect in 2027
Ministers have opted for a 'phased' rollout of the changes, which were a Labour manifesto promise, in order to balance safeguards for employees with 'the practical realities' of running a company. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hailed the Government's flagship Employment Rights Bill, which is making its way through Parliament, as 'the single biggest upgrade to workers' rights in a generation'. Its measures include bolstered rights to parental leave, a crackdown on 'fire and rehire' practices and the removal of the lower earnings limit and waiting period for statutory sick pay. Under the new legislation, bosses will be also be required to offer workers a guaranteed hours contract reflecting the hours they regularly work, as well as reasonable notice of shifts and payment of shifts. According to a new 'roadmap' published by the Government on Tuesday, some changes will be implemented immediately after the Bill receives royal assent but others will take up to two years to come into effect. After the legislation has passed, Conservative-era rules restricting industrial action in sectors including health and education will end as the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act 2023 will be instantly repealed. New protections against dismissal for striking workers will also come into effect after the Bill makes it onto the statute books, the Government said. But changes to sick pay, protections for whistleblowers, 'day-one' paternity leave and unpaid parental leave and reforms to strengthen financial security for staff facing mass redundancies will then take effect in April 2026. In October 2026, measures to end 'unscrupulous' fire and rehire practices and tightened tipping laws aimed at ensuring workers take home a fair proportion of gratuity will be implemented, the Government said. Measures to strengthen right of access for trade unions and protect employees from harassment are now also due to come into effect next October under the roadmap. Finally in 2027, the Government says it will implement: – Full gender pay gap and menopause action plans, which aim to support women in the workplace and will be introduced on a voluntary basis from next April – Bereavement leave – A ban on the 'exploitative' use of zero-hours contracts – 'Day-one' rights to protection against unfair dismissal – Improved access to flexible working, for example by allowing people to work from home – Strengthened protections against dismissal for pregnant women and new mothers. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said the Government was 'working fast' to deliver the reforms, with some due to kick in 'within months'. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: 'By phasing implementation, our collaborative approach balances meaningful worker protections with the practical realities of running a successful business, creating more productive workplaces where both employees and employers can thrive.' The Department for Business and Trade said that providing a 'structured timeline' would allow stakeholders to plan their time and resources to ensure they are ready for the changes. The Government will continue to consult with 'business groups, employers, workers and trade unions' in phases on the detail of the measures, beginning this summer and continuing into the new year, it said. Hospitality and recruitment bodies welcomed the time to prepare, while union leaders urged employers 'not to wait' for the law change before implementing the reforms. TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: 'It's welcome that workers will start to benefit from these long overdue changes from later this year – but this timetable must be a backstop. 'We need to see these new rights in action as soon as possible. Decent employers don't need to wait for the law to change. 'They should be working with staff and unions right now to introduce these changes as quickly as possible.' GMB general secretary Gary Smith said: 'GMB members now know when these much-needed improvements will happen – we urge good employers not to wait; do the right thing and make these changes a reality today.' Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UKHospitality, said: 'Clear and precise timelines on when aspects of this legislation, and the processes to deliver them, will come into force is essential, and it was important that the Government embark on providing clarity. 'There are substantial changes for businesses in the Employment Rights Bill and it's right that the Government is using the appropriate implementation periods for the most complex issues for hospitality, in order to get the details right for both businesses and workers.' Neil Carberry, Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec) chief executive, said: 'This clear timeline on the Employment Rights Bill gives room for full and frank consultation on how the new rules will be structured. It also gives businesses important time to plan. 'Now we have the roadmap, ongoing and meaningful engagement will be critical to ensuring new regulations allow the flexibility workers and companies value to remain.' The Tories said the roadmap amounted to 'another U-turn' and an admission from the Government that 'they have got it wrong again.' Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith said: '273,000 people have lost their jobs since the autumn budget and this trade union inspired Bill is going to make that even worse meaning more children growing up in workless households. Labour must throw it out and start again. 'The one thing Reynolds got right is that it is the Conservatives who are opposing his bad ideas. We are giving business a voice and saying what they say privately but that he refuses to listen to.'
