‘Extremely high risk' – World Cup faces major schedule revamp amid growing concern for player safety

FIFA have been urged to scrap "high risk" kick-off times at the World Cup next year.
Soaring temperatures in several North American cities have led to adverse weather conditions and delays at the Club World Cup.

There is now growing concern for player safety with water breaks deemed insufficient by some experts.
FifPro, a global players union that represents more than 70,000 pros, has called for changes to be made at the World Cup.
They want midday and afternoon matches scrapped in 'extremely high risk' cities such as Miami, Monterrey and Kansas City.
Boston, Philadelphia and Guadalajara have been deemed "very high risk" while Los Angeles and New York/New Jersey are "high risk".
FifPro director of policy Alexander Bielefeld said the issues at the Club World Cup has to be a "wake up call" for Fifa, and calls have been made to move matches to a later kick-off time.
FifPro's medical director Dr Vincent Gouttebarge outlined the potential health risks involved in playing in extreme heat.
He said: 'From our research, a couple of cities and some matches on the ongoing Club World Cup can be labelled as having a higher risk for heat-related illness, or, in the worst case, extreme high risk for heat-related illness.
'There are certain areas in a country that will be more at risk. So think about match destinations such as Orlando or Miami, for example, where you can see over a period of years that there's a higher risk attached to these venues and destinations.
'The question is, if we look at match scheduling and match planning ahead of the tournament, if we actually need midday kick-off times in these locations or in these high-risk areas — if we should probably move towards late kick-off times as a preferences for these venues.'
One expert, Professor Mike Tipton of Portsmouth University, a leading specialist on the effect of extreme temperature on the human body, has called for next year's World Cup final to be played at 9am.

Wales losing run extends to 18 defeats after late capitulation against Japan

First-half tries from Ben Thomas and Tom Rogers, as well as a penalty try and a Sam Costelow conversion, gave Wales a 19-7 interval lead and hopes of a first victory since beating Georgia at the 2023 World Cup 21 months ago. But Japan dominated the second half and tries from Takuro Matsunaga, Ichigo Nakakusu and Halatoa Vailea, plus nine points from the boot of Seungsin Lee, piled on more misery for Wales. 🚨 𝙎𝙜ô𝙧 𝙏𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙡 | 🇯🇵24-19🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿#WelshRugby | #JPNvWAL — Welsh Rugby Union 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (@WelshRugbyUnion) July 5, 2025 Brave Blossoms boss Eddie Jones said he had hoped for a hot day to 'run Wales off their feet' and the oppressive conditions – with the temperature above 30 degrees Celsius as well as high humidity – meant water breaks in each half and an extended interval. A slippery ball produced countless handling errors and there was often little rhythm to a disrupted contest that took over two hours to complete. Taulupe Faletau, Nicky Smith, Ben Thomas and Blair Murray survived from the 68-14 thrashing to England in the Six Nations as interim head coach Matt Sherratt made 11 changes. Number eight Faletau – the fifth-most capped Welshman – made his 109th appearance but it was largely an inexperienced line-up with six starters having fewer than 10 caps. Wales' fall from grace had left them in 12th place on World Rugby's rankings table, one spot above Japan, and it was very much a meeting between two teams in transition. There was a worrying start to the contest as Ben Carter took a hit to the side of the head inside 30 seconds. Carter slumped to the ground after attempting to make a tackle and there was a lengthy stoppage before the second row forward was taken away on a stretcher. Wales immediately shrugged off that blow as Faletau exploited space profited from a line-out ploy to send Thomas over with a well-timed pass and Costelow converted. Japan were on the backfoot and struggling to get out of their own half, but scored from their first attack after 16 minutes as winger Kippei Ishida sliced through midfield to set up Matsunaga and Lee's kick restored parity. Wales hit the front again with a penalty try after Nakakusu, who had replaced the injured Matsunaga moments earlier, deliberately slapped the ball away as Josh Adams closed on Kieran Hardy's chip by the try line. Nakakusu suffered further punishment with a yellow card, and Wales took advantage of their extra man after Japan had found touch from the kick-off. Faletau broke away from a scrum going backwards and Hardy, Costelow and Johnny Williams moved the ball on for Rogers to scamper into the corner. The tide turned in the second half as Amato Fakatava saw his effort ruled out for a Shinobu Fujiwara knock-on, but Japan were not to be denied after going through the phases. Rogers slipped off a tackle and Nakakusu dived over with Lee adding the extras and soon reducing the deficit to two points with a penalty. Japan got their noses in front for the first time as replacement Vailea barged over and Lee's sparked celebrations that continued until the final whistle. The two-match series will conclude in Kobe next Saturday.

Managing Leeds as Farke gets £40m go ahead and £30m Premier League hitman signs

Daniel Farke will be hoping to break the trend of promoted teams being relegated from the Premier League, and this is what Leeds United's transfer window could end up looking like Premier League survival for newly promoted teams is beginning to look like the hardest challenge in football. Now, up steps Daniel Farke and Leeds United, who will become one of the latest teams to try their luck at finishing above those dreaded dotted lines, after earning promotion from the Championship. Last year, Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton went down as quickly as they came up, just like Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United the year before. ‌ Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest were the last sides to not get relegated at the first time of asking, doing so in the 2022/23 campaign. ‌ It appears survival will be as expensive as it is difficult for Leeds, who have already been busy in the transfer window. Just under a month until the start of the new Premier League campaign, Mirror Football takes a look at who could be coming through the door. £40m green light One of Leeds' first priorities will likely be a new goalkeeper, with the future of Illan Meslier looking uncertain. The Frenchman was dropped for their last seven matches of the Championship campaign. On the subject of goalkeepers with uncertain futures, Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope could emerge as a potential, low-priced option. The 33-year-old's time at St James' Park could come to an end, as the Magpies are pursuing £40million rated Burnley No. 1 James Trafford. If he is to secure a move to the north East, it could give Leeds the green light to sign Pope. The latter will also have an eye on securing a place in the England squad for the World Cup, so will likely not settle on anything less than the No. 1 position in a Premier League team. £30m hitman ‌ Sky Sports reported back in May how Leeds have been pondering a move for Everton forward Beto. The Guinea Bissau international had a slow start under Sean Dyche, but exploded under David Moyes, contributing seven goals in 19 appearances. His goals helped drag Everton away from a relegation battle and into 13th position. However, having cost the Toffees £20m, it's likely the gangly forward will cost at least £30m. It's understood that Leeds have as much as £100m to spend in the transfer window, but could surpass that sum. They have already signed free agent Lukas Nmecha from Wolfsburg and Udinese defender Jaka Bijol. Potential £25m arrival from Serie A On the subject of centre-forwards, Nikola Krstovic of Serie A side Lecce remains an interest for Leeds. The Montenegro striker enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, contributing 11 goals and five assists in 37 Serie A appearances. His goals proved to be the difference between relegation and survival, as Lecce finished three points ahead of 18th placed Empoli. Such margins could also be vital for Leeds and the prospect of signing a striker who outscored the likes of Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic and ex-Chelsea ace Christian Pulisic could be too much to resist. ‌ It's also understood that he is valued at around £25.6m. They may also have the green light to make their move, as Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport claimed Lecce are in talks to sign Basel ace Kevin Carlos, who would essentially be a direct replacement if bought. A new defensive partnership Having already signed Bijol, Leeds are also considering a move for Real Betis defender Natan, according to Estadio Deportivo. Interestingly, the Brazilian was only on loan from Napoli last season, but became a permanent signing this summer. ‌ However, the outlet claims Leeds, Lazio and two other undisclosed clubs have expressed an interest in signing him. They also state the La Liga side have rejected an offer of €27m (£23.3m) for his services, but it is unclear who bid that amount. If he arrives, he would likely partner new arrival Bijol and complete a brand new defensive partnership. This could be risky, but it may also stop the goals from going into the Leeds net.

How Travis Kelce made Taylor Swift's year 'even more special' after she sealed deal to buy back her music

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce reportedly helped make girlfriend Taylor Swift sealing the deal to buy back her music 'even more special' due to their romance. Swift announced in late May that she bought back the masters to her discography, giving the 14-time Grammy winner total control of her first six studio albums. Nearly two years into their relationship, the acquisition came with Kelce by her side, as he has flown around the world to support her music during the 'Eras Tour'. 'Reclaiming her masters has been emotional and empowering. She's proud, relieved, and finally feels like a chapter has closed in the best possible way. Having Travis by her side for that milestone made it even more special,' PEOPLE reported. In return, Kelce reportedly 'was honored to support her and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way.' Earlier this week, Kelce and Swift's relationship was described as hitting a 'turning point', as the happy couple are in a rare period of calm after Swift wrapped her concert tour last December, combined with Kelce being in the NFL's offseason since February, giving them more time than ever together. 'It's been a turning point for their relationship in a lot of ways,' PEOPLE reported. 'They're incredibly happy and in sync. There's a calmness and ease to their relationship right now that's been really grounding for Taylor and Travis.' 'Taylor and Travis are soaking up every minute of this slower season together. They've been splitting their time between New York, Nashville, and a few quiet getaways, just enjoying each other's company without all the usual chaos. This kind of downtime is rare for both of them, and it's really allowed their bond to deepen.' It has not been completely quiet for Kelce and Swift over the last few months, attending an event together for the first time as a couple several days ago. At the Tight End University event, Swift and Kelce were clearly locked in on each other, including sharing some PDA in front of cameras. Swift has attended 23 NFL games since she started dating Kelce, all while having touring commitments. That number should skyrocket as Kelce's time in the NFL may be dwindling with the 'Anti-Hero' singer on his arm. 'Taylor is really looking forward to the upcoming NFL season,' PEOPLE stated. 'Not just because she loves supporting Travis, but because for the first full season since they started dating, she's not juggling a packed tour schedule.' 'This fall will be completely different. It's the first season where she's not constantly flying back and forth or working around an entire touring calendar. The past two seasons were a whirlwind between performing across multiple countries, long flights, and trying to squeeze in alone time together wherever possible. It wasn't easy but they made it work.'
