NEW DELHI: The 14th
Dalai Lama
, Tenzin Gyatso, marked his 90th birthday on Sunday with a large celebration in Dharamshala, his home in exile since 1959. Despite heavy rain, monks, nuns, and followers from across the world gathered at the Tsuglagkhang temple complex to honour the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The courtyard was filled with red-robed monks, traditional music, and heartfelt tributes. Tibetan artists played drums and bagpipes, and senior lamas struck cymbals as the Dalai Lama arrived dressed in a traditional maroon and yellow robe.
'I live my life in the service of other sentient beings,' he told the audience, reflecting on his journey. 'When I look back on my life, I see that I have not wasted it at all.'
Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh represented the Indian government. Among international guests was Hollywood actor
Richard Gere
, a long-time supporter of the Tibetan cause, who called the Dalai Lama 'the most extraordinary man to ever walk on this planet.'
Messages also poured in from global leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a symbol of 'love, compassion, patience, and moral discipline.' US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Dalai Lama continues to inspire unity and compassion, while former US presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton also shared personal tributes.
Celebrations in Dharamshala followed a week of events, including the Dalai Lama's announcement that the spiritual lineage would continue after his death, ending years of uncertainty.

Across Himachal Pradesh, tributes continued. In Shimla, monks at the Dorjidak Monastery offered long-life prayers, led by Nawang Tashi Rapten, a young monk recognised as the reincarnation of Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche. He also cut a ceremonial cake.
Tibetan monk Kunga Lama called the birthday 'a celebration of identity and unity,' saying the Dalai Lama is not only the spiritual head but also 'the guide for the entire Tibetan culture of peace and compassion.'
Celebrations were also held in Nepal and in Tibetan settlements around the world, with prayers, chanting, and traditional dances.
Born Lhamo Dhondup in 1935 in northeastern Tibet, the Dalai Lama was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at age two. He took full spiritual and political authority by 1950 but fled to India after Chinese crackdown in 1959. He has since become a global advocate for non-violence, interfaith harmony, and human rights.

Israel-US talks: 'Trump forging peace as we speak,' says Netanyahu; US President for Nobel Peace Prize

US President Trump and Israeli PM Netanyahu at White House (AP image) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday (local time) that he has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize , noting his efforts in "forging peace in one region after another". "I want to present to you, Mr President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It's nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should get it," Netanyahu said as Trump hosted him for talks at the White House. — ANI (@ANI) Trump has received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations from supporters and lawmakers over the years. He has openly expressed frustration about not receiving the prestigious award. He has criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee for overlooking his role in mediating tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as Serbia and Kosovo. He has also sought credit for helping maintain peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, and for brokering the Abraham Accords agreements aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Trump campaigned as a "peacemaker," promising to use his negotiating skills to quickly end wars in Ukraine and Gaza. However, both conflicts continues to rage even after five months of his presidency.

Karnataka high court orders notice on Tejasvi Surya's plea seeking release of Bengaluru Metro fare report

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered notice to the Central and state govts, as well as the Bangalore Metro Railway Corporation Limited (BMRCL), in response to a petition filed by LS Tejasvi Surya , BJP MP for the Bengaluru South constituency. The petitioner sought a direction to BMRCL to immediately publish or release the report of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) headed by Justice (retd) R Tharani. Counsel for the petitioner submitted that three representations were given seeking the release of the report in Dec 2024. Pursuant to this, BMRCL came up with a revised fare. "The media have filed queries under the Right to Information Act. However, BMRCL has refused to reveal the report," counsel added. "You (petitioner) are so powerful and can't make BMRCL release this report?" Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav remarked in a lighter vein before adjourning the hearing. Surya's counsel responded by saying that the petitioner himself met the BMRCL managing director and was told they need approval. According to him, Bengalureans have a legitimate expectation of transparency in the functioning of BMRCL based on established and consistent practice across metro rail corporations in the country. In the past, Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad Metro rail corporations have duly published such reports for the benefit of the public, thereby reflecting transparency in public governance and decision-making processes, he pointed out while seeking the intervention of the high court in the matter.

Govt PU colleges face power cuts; told to pay bills despite free supply order

Koppal: The issue of unannounced power cuts in govt educational institutions has emerged as a significant concern. Despite govt directives for complimentary electricity supply to primary, high schools, and PU colleges, the energy department has unexpectedly approached educational heads demanding payment for pending bills. Gescom authorities have threatened to cut power supply to institutions that have not cleared their dues. After the launch of Gruha Jyoti yojana, teachers' groups advocated for complimentary electricity and water supply for educational institutions. On Nov 1, 2023, CM Siddaramaiah announced free utilities for all govt schools and PU colleges statewide. An official order followed on Dec 15, 2023. The initiative to provide complimentary utilities to govt educational institutions across the state could improve educational standards and increase student numbers, while preserving the maintenance funds in govt schools. The govt has issued clear instructions for provision of free utilities to all state-run educational institutions from 2024-25. The directive required the energy and urban development departments to submit annual grant proposals to the finance department for necessary funding. However, disregarding these instructions, the energy department continues to pressurise educational institutions for bill payments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 노안+백내장 안보이는 답답함! 더는 방치 하지 마세요! 부산백내장노안 전문안과 더 알아보기 Undo Explicit instructions have been given to electricity providers to cease billing educational institutions. Companies are not authorised to collect payments under any circumstances. A senior official confirmed that additional guidelines would be issued shortly. K Nagesh and Chandrashekar Nuggali, president and general secretary of the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association, requested the govt to implement free electricity retrospectively from Nov 1, 2023. They stressed that educational heads should not face payment pressures, and Escoms should cease disconnection threats. Koppal district houses 41 govt PU colleges, with many having received Gescom payment notices. Pani Rajesh, Gescom EE for Koppal zone, clarified that the notice in question relates to dues accumulated before the govt order that mandates free electricity. "However, every govt PU college that has registered with the District Information System for Education (DISE) code is entitled to free electricity," he stated.
