Temasek to increase exposure in AI, core-plus infrastructure

Business Times09-07-2025
[SINGAPORE] Singapore investment company Temasek is increasing its exposure to 'promising opportunities' in artificial intelligence (AI) and core-plus infrastructure.
AI is a 'two-decade opportunity' with the potential to transform industries, said Chia Song Hwee, the deputy chief executive officer of Temasek. Core-plus infrastructure 'provides resilient, risk-adjusted returns and stable cash use', said Temasek's management in a media briefing for the launch of its annual Temasek Review released on Wednesday (Jul 9).
These asset classes are part of Temasek's global direct investments, which make up 36 per cent of its portfolio. Temasek's Singapore-based portfolio companies and partnerships with other investors and asset management companies make up 41 and 23 per cent of its portfolio, respectively.
In the AI space, Temasek is looking to increase its opportunities across the value chain. This includes AI companies that are growing at an 'exponential pace', physical infrastructure to support AI and emerging AI innovators that can disrupt the market. Some of the companies that Temasek has already invested in include chipmaker Nvidia and software company Intapp.
Temasek has set up AI-related ventures which can work with its portfolio companies to improve their value. For example, it founded software company Aicadium in 2021 to provide AI solutions to companies. It has also invested in AI funds such as AI Infrastructure Partnership, which is backed by Microsoft and BlackRock.
Core-plus infrastructure
Temasek is also looking at core-plus infrastructure, a type of infrastructure asset class that is riskier than traditional infrastructure, but safer than growth infrastructure investments. They include assets such as data centres, infrastructure to support energy transition infrastructure and ageing infrastructure that needs to be replaced.

Temasek is deploying its capital into this asset class in a few ways. It is doing so directly through its portfolio companies that have deep expertise in the area and through investments in funds. It is also partnering global investors, such as in its partnership with Brookfield to acquire a stake in French renewable energy producer Neoen.
Lim Ming Pey, the chief of staff at Temasek's executive office, told The Business Times that when it comes to its global direct investments, Temasek prefers to invest in companies that have a track record of stable cash flow, have access to a large domestic market, and have a relatively resilient supply chain.
'Such companies are better protected against the risk of tariffs or other geopolitical impacts,' said Lim.
In the past year, Temasek has invested in Indian snack company Haldiram's, Neoen and China's largest restaurant operator Yum China.
Alternative assets will also be an 'important return driver' for Temasek in the years ahead, said Lim. These assets mostly form the third segment of its portfolio, which consists of investments in funds, partnerships with other investors and asset management companies.
Alternative investments help to diversify Temasek's portfolio beyond equities and potentially generate higher risk-adjusted returns.
To that end, Temasek is increasing its exposure in areas such as private credit and hybrid solutions, private equity funds, as well as liquid alternatives and uncorrelated strategies that include hedge funds, closed block insurance and royalties.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration LONDON - British financial technology giant Revolut will become title partner of the Audi Formula One team from next season in a "monumental" multi-year deal, both parties announced on Wednesday. The fast-growing London-based fintech company was valued at $45 billion last year through a secondary share sale to new and existing investors. Swiss-based Sauber are becoming the factory Audi team in 2026, when Formula One starts a new engine era with major rule changes and an 11th team on the grid with the arrival of Cadillac. Jonathan Wheatley, principal of the Audi team, said the deal had been put together in less than four months and had obvious benefits for both sides. "If you imagine we need to engage with our fans, we need a partner that's going to help us do that," Wheatley told Reuters in a video call. "We need to expand hugely into this incredible global space that Formula One is in at the moment, and we need to become the most attractive team in Formula One." Wheatley said the deal reflected Audi's brand strength and was a "good news story for Formula One." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Tesla signs US$4.3 billion LGES battery deal, source says, reducing China reliance

[SEOUL] South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) has signed a US$4.3 billion deal to supply Tesla with energy storage system batteries, said a source familiar with the matter, as the US company looks to reduce reliance on Chinese imports due to tariffs. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will be supplied from LGES's US factory in Michigan, the source said on condition of anonymity because the details were not public. LGES announced earlier on Wednesday (Jul 30) that it had signed a US$4.3 billion contract to supply LFP batteries over three years globally, without identifying the customer or saying if they would be used in vehicles or energy storage systems. The South Korean company said last week it would try to offset sluggish electric vehicle (EV) demand by increasing sales of storage batteries, thanks to a global surge in demand for power driven by data centres to train artificial intelligence. 'In accordance with our agreement, we are unable to disclose the customer's identity due to confidentiality obligations,' LGES said. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tesla chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja said in April that US tariffs had an 'outsized' impact on its energy business, since it sources LFP batteries from China. Tesla this week also announced a US$16.5 billion deal to buy chips from Samsung Electronics' factory in Texas as South Korean companies expand their US presence to meet local demand. Three South Korean cabinet-level officials met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington in a push to close a trade deal ahead of an Aug 1 deadline for 25 per cent tariffs on US imports from South Korea to kick in, Seoul said on Wednesday. US production LGES is one of the few US producers of LFP batteries, a battery chemistry long dominated by Chinese rivals that have little presence in the US market. It started production of LFP batteries at its Michigan factory in May. The company said it was considering converting some EV battery production lines in the United States to cater to energy storage systems in response to slowing EV demand. LGES said the contract would last from August 2027 to July 2030 and included an option to extend the deal period by up to seven years and to increase supply volumes depending on discussions with its customer. 'Other players, including South Korean firms such as Samsung SDI and SK On, have yet to enter the US LFP market, allowing LGES to enjoy a first-mover advantage,' said Cho Hyun-ryul, a senior analyst at Samsung Securities. 'While rivals have announced plans, LGES remains the only one actively producing at scale.' Tesla's energy storage and generation business accounts for just over 10 per cent of its revenue but it has been a bright spot for the company as it struggles with slowing car sales and upcoming cuts to US government support for EVs. 'Energy is growing really well despite headwinds from tariffs and various supply chain challenges,' Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on an earnings call last week. 'I think not that many people appreciate just how gigantic the scale of battery demand is.' Tesla has said that its first LFP cell manufacturing facility will be online by the end of the year, but the in-house factory in Nevada will likely account for a small portion of its demand. REUTERS
