Revolut to become title partner of Audi F1 team

LONDON - British financial technology giant Revolut will become title partner of the Audi Formula One team from next season in a "monumental" multi-year deal, both parties announced on Wednesday.
The fast-growing London-based fintech company was valued at $45 billion last year through a secondary share sale to new and existing investors.
Swiss-based Sauber are becoming the factory Audi team in 2026, when Formula One starts a new engine era with major rule changes and an 11th team on the grid with the arrival of Cadillac.
Jonathan Wheatley, principal of the Audi team, said the deal had been put together in less than four months and had obvious benefits for both sides.
"If you imagine we need to engage with our fans, we need a partner that's going to help us do that," Wheatley told Reuters in a video call.
"We need to expand hugely into this incredible global space that Formula One is in at the moment, and we need to become the most attractive team in Formula One."
Wheatley said the deal reflected Audi's brand strength and was a "good news story for Formula One."

"It's the Audi magnet that's drawing a lot of people here right now," he said, speaking from the team headquarters in Hinwil, Switzerland.
Revolut has more than 55 million customers but has no physical branches. It gained a banking licence in Britain in 2024, after a three-year wait, and has global expansion plans.
Antoine Le Nel, Revolut's chief marketing officer, gave no financial details of the F1 partnership but said the company was in for the long run with Audi and aiming for 100 million customers by 2027.
He said Revolut had been looking for a platform to help the company build on its expansion.
"I think we have a true opportunity to really bring F1 to a huge audience," he told Reuters.
"From a retail perspective as well as a business perspective, I think there's going to be a lot of opportunities for us to connect the fan base to the sport through the Revolut platform."
Le Nel said Audi taking on the established teams in Formula One was like Revolut competing against traditional banks.
"If you look at Audi, very premium German brand dominating its market, it's where we want to be," he said. "It's a way for Revolut to elevate and get to where Audi has been for such a long time."
Audi said Revolut Business would be extensively integrated into the team's financial operations.
Sauber are sixth in the 10 team championship ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix and have scored in their last five races.

Brunei tweaks Bridgewater bet to a lucrative 20% stake in firm
[NEW YORK] Brunei's sovereign wealth fund pulled money from an investment in a Bridgewater Associates strategy to buy an almost 20% stake in the hedge fund manager's holding company, a move that has helped spur higher gains for other institutional investors. The Brunei Investment Agency is the latest longstanding client to buy a piece of the firm founded by Ray Dalio, which managed US$92 billion as at Dec 31. It's unclear which Bridgewater vehicle Brunei pulled money from, although the sovereign wealth fund remains an investor in all of the firm's funds, according to a source familiar with the money manager. Bridgewater's flagship Pure Alpha II, like many macro funds, has improved its performance in the past few years, but over a longer period, returns have been uneven. That means a long-term investment in the firm itself can be more lucrative than betting on its most popular product. Bridgewater has been selling stakes to institutions for more than a decade. The Teacher Retirement System of Texas, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund and the International Monetary Fund have all purchased a piece of the Westport, Connecticut-based firm. The Texas teachers pension fund invested US$250 million in Bridgewater's holding company in 2012 and reported making an annualised return of 8.7 per cent to Mar 31. An investor in Pure Alpha would have gained an annualised 2 per cent from the beginning of 2012 to June 2025. Last year, the fund climbed 11.3 per cent and it's up 17 per cent in the first half of this year. India aghast at Donald Trump's ‘dead' economy jibe, 25% tariffs
[MUMBAI] Shock, dismay and angst swept across India as businesses, policymakers and citizens digested US President Donald Trump's sharp remarks and a surprise 25 per cent tariff rate earlier this week. While Indian government officials weighed a response and business groups tallied the cost of the trade barrier, the local social media flared up with users protesting Trump's comments and criticising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking up. It started with Trump saying that India's trade barriers were the 'most strenuous and obnoxious', in a Truth Social post on Jul 30. He added the US may also impose a penalty for New Delhi's purchase of Russian weapons and energy. Less than a day later, he ripped into India again for aligning with Russia, calling them 'dead economies' in another post. With no imminent trade deal, the 25 per cent tariffs kicked in as at Friday. India is hardly alone in facing Trump's trade wrath, and not the subject to the very highest rates, but the news left business and political leaders wondering how to cope with the fallout. 'Blunt-force' message 'Overnight, the US-India trade equation shifted from tense to turbulent,' said Akshat Garg, assistant vice-president at Choice Wealth, a Mumbai-based financial services firm. The levies 'feel less like structured policy and more like a blunt-force political message'. Complicating the narrative around the India trade deal, or the lack of it, was the US pact with its traditional rival Pakistan that came through on the same day. 'The biggest blow is that Pakistan and Bangladesh got a better rate than us,' V Elangovan, managing director at SNQS Internationals, an apparel maker in the southern Indian manufacturing hub of Tirupur, told Bloomberg News. 'We were expecting something in the 15 to 20 per cent range.' India's annoyance can be traced back in part to Trump declaring himself the peacemaker that helped broker a ceasefire in the armed conflict between India and Pakistan in May. The move was seen as an effort to upstage Modi and put the two South Asian neighbours on an equal footing, despite India's larger military and economy. The events of this week have cemented that impression further in the eyes of some Indian observers. When the tariff rate news first dropped in late Wednesday evening in India, Ashish Kanodia recalls being 'very disturbed'. A director at Kanodia Global, a closely held exporter that gets over 40 per cent of its revenue from the US selling home fabrics to toys, the entrepreneur already has two of its largest US customers seeking discounts to make up for the levy. 'The next six months are going to be difficult for everyone,' Kanodia said, adding that profit margins will be squeezed. If the pain continues for 'months and months', he said that he will have to start cutting his workforce. The US is India's largest trading partner, with the two-way trade between them at an estimated US$129.2 billion in 2024. Compared with India's 25 per cent, Bangladesh was subjected to a 20 per cent tariff, Vietnam got a 20 per cent levy and Indonesia and Pakistan each received 19 per cent duties. 'We know that we have got a deal that is worse than other countries,' said Sabyasachi Ray, executive director at The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. 'We will take it up with the government.' Trump's actions mark a 180-degree turn for New Delhi's hopes of preferential treatment over regional peers. It was among the first to engage Washington in trade talks in February, confident of hammering out a deal sooner than others. Trump had called India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'my friend' in a Feb 14 post on X and the bond between the two countries 'special'. India is now weighing options to placate the White House, including boosting US imports, Bloomberg News reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, and many hope that the bilateral relationship and the tariff rate can still be improved. 'It is a storm in the India-US relationship at this moment, but I think there's a good chance that it will go away,' Vivek Mishra, deputy director of the Strategic Studies Programme at Delhi-based Observer Researcher Foundation, told Bloomberg News. Indian business and trade groups are supporting the government's stance on the deal as the negotiations for a US-India trade deal continue. Negotiating tactic Jewellery businesses 'are worried but they are not panicking' because they hope a more favourable deal can be worked out, said Ray of the gems export body. 'The negotiation that should be happening should be a win-win, not a win-lose.' The abrupt announcement by Trump over social media when negotiations with India were ongoing 'seems like a knee-jerk reaction', according to Rohit Kumar, founding partner at public policy research firm The Quantum Hub. Barclays latest British lender to quit climate banking alliance
[LONDON] Barclays has become the latest British lender to quit the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), the bank said on Friday (Aug 1), arguing that the departure of several global lenders has left it no longer fit to support the bank's green transition. Barclays' decision to quit the foremost banking alliance focused on tackling climate change follows that of HSBC and several major US banks and raises questions about the ability of the group to influence change in the sector going forward. 'After consideration, we have decided to withdraw from the Net Zero Banking Alliance,' the bank said. The bank added that its commitment to be net zero by 2050 remained unchanged and that it still saw a commercial opportunity for itself and its clients in the energy transition. Earlier this week, Barclays published the first update on its sustainability strategy in several years and said that it made £500 million (S$857 million) in revenue from sustainable and low-carbon transition finance in 2024. Jeanne Martin, co-director of corporate engagement at responsible investment NGO ShareAction, called the decision to leave the Net Zero Banking Alliance 'incredibly disappointing and a step in the wrong direction at a time when the dangers of climate change are rapidly mounting'. The NZBA, a global initiative launched by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, lists more than 100 members on its website, including leading international financial institutions. A spokesperson for the alliance said that it remains focused on 'supporting its members to lead on climate by addressing the barriers preventing their clients from investing in the net-zero transition.'
