Zohran Mamdani's City-Owned Grocery Plan Faces Scrutiny After Viral Kansas City's Store Video

Mamdani has promoted his plan for state-owned grocery stores as a way to shift public funds away from corporate retailers.
Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primary last month and has since emerged as one of the leading contenders for the position of New York City mayor. Currently focused on his campaign, Mamdani has outlined several proposals, one of which includes the creation of city-owned grocery stores.
However, just weeks after his victory, a viral video has cast doubt on the feasibility of such an initiative. Footage of an empty public grocery store in Kansas City, Missouri, has attracted criticism online. The video, reportedly filmed at KC Sun Fresh, shows rows of bare shelves, as reported by KSHB 41.
New York Times.
Speaking on The Bulwark podcast, Mamdani said he plans to open one store in each of New York City's five boroughs. He estimated the total cost of the project at $65 million.
Acknowledging the experimental nature of the idea, Mamdani said, 'if they work, they work. And if they don't work, c'est la vie, then the idea was wrong."
This is not the first time a public official has proposed city-owned grocery initiatives. In 2023, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced a similar concept following the closure of Walmart and a Whole Foods in his city. His administration is now exploring the possibility of launching a city-run farmers' market, where vendors could sell their produce directly at one centralised location.

Jay Leno on steering clear of politics on The Tonight Show: ‘Don't think anybody wants to hear lecture'

Jay Leno revisited his two-decade tenure on The Tonight Show in a candid conversation with David Trulio, President & CEO of the Reagan Foundation, explaining why he consistently avoided political humour. 'I like to think that people come to a comedy show to kind of get away from the things, the pressures of life, whatever it might be,' Leno said, adding, 'I love political humour, don't get me wrong, but what happens is people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other.' Leno was known for walking a fine line between humour and neutrality during his run from 1992 to 2009 (and again briefly from 2010 to 2014). He told Trulio that his strategy was simple: appeal to everyone. 'Why shoot for just half an audience? Why not try to get the whole?' 'I don't understand why you would alienate one particular group,' he said. 'Or just don't do it at all. I'm not saying you have to throw your support or whatever, but just do what's funny.' According to Fox News, Leno recalled receiving conflicting hate mail over the same jokes, with one viewer accusing him of siding with Republicans, and another calling him a Democratic sympathiser. 'And I go, 'Well, that's good.' That's how you get a whole audience,' he said. Leno's philosophy on comedy is simple. 'Funny is funny,' he told Trulio. 'I don't think anybody wants to hear a lecture.' He drew a contrast with the current political climate in comedy, where many late-night hosts have embraced explicit political opinions. 'Now you have to be content with half the audience because you have to give your opinion,' Leno noted. He pointed to his long friendship with fellow comedian Rodney Dangerfield as a model for apolitical comedy. 'I knew Rodney 40 years,' Leno said. 'I have no idea if he was Democrat or Republican. We never discussed, we just discussed jokes.' The interview comes just before CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. As reported by CNN and Fox News, the network cited financial constraints, but the decision drew speculation about political motives, given Colbert's consistent criticism of Donald Trump. Weeks before the announcement, CBS and its parent company Paramount paid Trump $16 million in a settlement related to a 60 Minutes segment. Colbert had openly criticised the deal, calling it a 'big fat bribe' on-air. The show is now set to end in May 2026. (With inputs from CNN, Fox News)

'How Such Kind Of...: HC Orders Probe Into Alleged Illegal Marriages By Arya Samaj Societies

Last Updated: The Allahabad HC ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate Arya Samaj societies for allegedly conducting illegal marriages. The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to probe into the functioning of Arya Samaj societies that are allegedly conducting illegal marriages across the state. The single-judge bench issued the directive while hearing a plea of a man, named Sonu, who is accused of abducting and sexual assaulting a minor girl belonging to different faith. The applicant told the court that he had later married the girl at an Arya Samaj Mandir. Justice Prashant Kumar noted that these societies were performing marriages without verifying the legal age of the individuals involved and were potentially violating the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The court specifically ordered the Home Secretary of the state to appoint an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police to investigate the proliferation of such 'fake" Arya Samaj institutions. It also sought a compliance report in the form of a personal affidavit to be submitted by the next hearing on August 29. 'However, the Secretary, Home, Govt. of U.P. is directed to get the matter investigated by an officer, not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, as to how such kind of fake Arya Samaj Societies have flourished throughout the State, who are getting such marriages done, in some cases even of the minor girls and thereafter, issuing certificates, and that too, by violating the provisions of the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021," the judge noted. The court order came in response to a petition filed by Sonu who sought quashing of a summoning order related to an FIR registered against him in September 2023. He had been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting the woman when she was minor. Sonu's counsel argued that he had married the girl in February 2020 and that she had started living with him only after attaining majority. However, the court found that the alleged marriage had no legal standing, as the girl was a minor at the time, the marriage was unregistered, and there was no valid religious conversion as required by law. The court also pointed out that the victim and the accused belonged to different religions and that the ceremony reportedly conducted at an Arya Samaj Mandir in Prayagraj did not meet the legal standards set by the UP Marriage Registration Rules, 2017. Subsequently, the court dismissed Sonu's plea to quash the proceedings, ruling that the alleged marriage could not be considered legally valid. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Never Asked How Many Pakistani Planes We Shot Down': Rajnath Singh Tears Into Oppn On Op Sindoor

The defence minister said in the end, the result matters and all goals were achieved by the Indian forces under Operation Sindoor Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday trained his guns on the Opposition for questioning India's Operation Sindoor—launched in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 innocent civilians lost their lives—saying the bloc never asked the 'right" questions. 'It is the Opposition's job to ask the government important questions related to public issues. Sometimes, our opposition members kept asking how many of our planes were shot down, but they never asked how many Pakistani planes our forces had shot down. If you want to ask questions, then ask if any of our soldiers were harmed in this operation. The answer is no," Singh said in the Lok Sabha.
