Vance Joseph Reveals Why Broncos Selected Jahdae Barron
Rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron, making his way to the Denver Broncos, was a surprising transaction to many.

Some media personalities expected the Broncos to use their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on a player at a position of greater need. Others – like Draft Wire's Jeff Risdon, who listed Barron as the best cornerback prospect in the draft not named Travis Hunter – expected Barron to already be off the board by the time the No. 20 overall pick came around.
That's not how the dominoes fell, however, and Barron became a Bronco on April 24, 2025.
Vance Joseph, the Broncos' defensive coordinator, will be working closely with Barron as he navigates his first season in the NFL. And it's safe to say Joseph was happy about the decision the team's front office made.
"When you watch his game in college, you see a very intelligent player. You see a guy who played multiple positions in college – corner, he played some safety, he played some nickel. He's a very mature, smart football player," Joseph said. "[There] wasn't a bunch of negative points to his game. So, for us, it was a no-brainer. He's sitting on the board; he's the highest guy on the board. It was a no-brainer for us to draft him."

Joseph had familiarized himself with Barron's game and personality well before the Broncos evaluated the rookie in the pre-draft process. Joseph's cousin, Terry Joseph, served as Texas' defensive passing game coordinator from 2021 to 2024, the final four years of Barron's college football career.

Barron's character both on and off the field only made him more sought-after in the Broncos' eyes, Joseph said.
"Obviously, with these young guys you're drafting, the person sometimes kills the player. But I knew he was a good person. He was a very mature, intelligent person. That was one of the things that we loved about the player," Joseph said. "And you watch the tape, and he's a football player. He can tackle; he can cover. He had ball skills."
Barron heads into his rookie season coming off a decorated five-year career with the Longhorns, where he was a consensus All-American and winner of the Jim Thorpe Award (which is given annually to the top defensive back in college football) during his senior season.

Justin Verlander Report Surfaces Minutes After Giants-Mets Trade
Justin Verlander Report Surfaces Minutes After Giants-Mets Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Right-handed starter Justin Verlander is in his first season with the San Francisco Giants after signing a one-year, $15 million contract in January. The 42-year-old debuted for the Detroit Tigers in 2005 and quickly established himself among the best pitchers of his generation. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and earned the first of his nine All-Star selections in 2007. Verlander's best season came in 2011, when he captured the AL MVP honor and his first Cy Young Award. He went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts over a league-leading 34 starts. Over 544 career regular-season starts, Verlander owns a 263-155 record with a 3.33 ERA and 3,493 strikeouts. He ranks among the most durable and dominant pitchers of the modern era. During Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Giants traded reliever Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets for a package headlined by right-hander Blade Tidwell, outfielder Drew Gilbert and reliever Jose Butto. Moments later, reports surfaced that San Francisco had made Verlander available on the trade market. After a promising start to the season, the Giants have stumbled, losing five straight games and eight of their last 10, slipping to 54-54 on the year. Verlander's numbers have dipped at age 42. He's 1-8 with a 4.53 ERA through 18 starts — but his veteran leadership and two World Series titles still make him a valuable addition for contenders seeking rotation depth. We hit 37 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now
We've reached 37 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 37 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 37 Who's wearing it now: S Trey Taylor The former Jim Thorpe Award winner from Air Force was the Raiders selection in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He enters his second season having played sparingly last season, appearing in nine games and seeing zero snaps on defense. At this point his most notable moment was mocking Patrick Mahomes with a fan's Kermit puppet during training camp last year. If he's going to change that, he'll need to work his way up the depth chart. Who wore it best: CB Lester Hayes One of the greatest cornerbacks in Raiders franchise history. He spent his entire ten-year NFL career with the Raiders. In that time, he helped the Raiders to win two Super Bowls including 1980 when he had a league-leading 13 interceptions. In total he had 39 career interceptions and made five Pro Bowls. Some believe he should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is only being kept out because of his generous use of Stick-em in those days. But plenty of players used it and it wasn't illegal, so it's not right for him to be discounted for it.
