Michael O'Sullivan's brother pays emotional tribute to tragic jockey after big win
The brother of Michael O'Sullivan paid an emotional tribute to the tragic jockey after riding a big winner at the famous Galway Festival. Cheltenham Festival-winning rider Michael died in February aged 24 from injuries sustained in a five horse pile-up at the final fence of a chase at Thurles in February.
He was the subject of numerous tributes at the Cheltenham Festival where his loved ones, including amateur rider brother Alan, were present to see the jockey's first Festival winner Marine Nationale win the Queen Mother Champion Chase in March, then by an uncanny coincidence Jazzy Matty, O'Sullivan's other Cheltenham Festival winner, scored later on the same day.
On Thursday Alan was riding the JP McManus-owned Filey Bay, trained by Emmet Mullins, in the Connact Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap.
He had to weave a path to get a run on the 7-1 chance and when he did he fairly shot clear, with the winning jockey looking to the skies as he passed the line four and three-quarter lengths ahead of Mon Coeur.
'It's unbelievable, my goal at the start of the year was to be good enough that someone might want me for this. He was looking down on me, I think,' said O'Sullivan.
'When I wanted the gaps, they came for me, I got a dream run. I probably went the brave man's route, but I thought it's what Mikey would have done. I had loads of horse, if I got any gap at all I had the horse to take it.'
Winning trainer Mullins said: 'It was meant to be and I'm a bit lost for words. It's just magic. It was Michael's saddle that Alan was using today. Michael rode a few times for me here and I think we hit the crossbar twice, so Alan steadied the ship.
'It's been a long enough road with the horse. We had him last season and I sent him home twice as I just wasn't happy. Thankfully with JP the patience has paid off.
'Alan was keen to ride him, and I was keen to claim off him as well. For 7lb claimers you don't need to look any further than Alan.'

Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore announce joint training licence
Russell, who has been training since 1995 in the professional ranks, has sent out over 1,000 winners in her own name, including two Grand Nationals and four Cheltenham Festival successes. We have built more stables and will have around 160 horses in training by the time the jumps season fully kicks into gear. 'Being able to share responsibility for the operational running of the stable has also allowed me to concentrate more time on arguably the most important part of training, sourcing new horses. That has seen the quality of horses we are able to train continue to improve thanks to the support of our owners.' Scudamore, son of Russell's partner and assistant Peter, said: 'I am really excited to be joining Lucinda as joint trainer. The Russell stable has been one of the most successful in the country over the last two years and this move reflects our ambitions to reach even greater heights. 'Any trainer will tell you that when you move into a new stable it takes time to get used to the gallops and the environment around you. 'The last two years have been a great learning experience. I now feel I am fully integrated into a very experienced team in which everyone knows their roles. 'We have had some great results and everyone is eager to further build on that success.'

Anfield evacuated ahead of Liverpool vs Athletic Bilbao friendly double-header
Fans were asked to leave ahead of the 5pm kick off for the friendly with the Spanish outfit. Anfield was evacuated ahead of this evening's friendly against Athletic Bilbao. Liverpool's game with the Spanish side was due kick off at 5pm, with a further fixture against the same opposition at 8pm. Fans had already begun to take their seats in the stadium when an alarm sounded and supporters were asked to leave the stadium. The reason for the evacuation is so far unclear at this stage. After a short period, supporters were allowed to re-enter Anfield huge queues formed at the turnstiles, reports the Mirror. The Reds are preparing for the 2025/26 Premier League season with a mixture of first-team and youth fixtures set to appear against their Spanish opponents in two separate matches. Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson are among the first-team regulars to be named to play in the first fixture. The friendly double-header marks the first return to Anfield for Liverpool since the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The Portuguese star, 28, was killed in a car crash alongside brother Andre Silva in Spain last month. In his programme notes, skipper Virgil van Dijk said: "It has, of course, been a very challenging time. "First and foremost for Diogo and Andre's family, for Rute and the kids. They are the people who must always come first in all of this. We must never forget that, and we cannot imagine their pain in this moment. You think about so many different things, and it's difficult to process. You can't imagine the pain, the feeling that they have. That's why we try to be there as much as we can, and for each other as well.
