College football viewer's guide: Everything you need to know for this season
The return of college football is almost here. Unlike last season, there's not much new with the College Football Playoff this year — and the format may not be changing again soon with conferences divided on the best long-term solution for the sport. So in the meantime, the 12-team playoff awaits again this season, with one change: The top four seeds will be the top four teams in the rankings no matter if they're conference champs or not. (Last year, the top four conference champions received the four first-round byes, resulting in Boise State and Arizona State getting byes despite being ranked No. 9 and No. 12, respectively.) With that little bit of housekeeping out of the way, here's everything you need to know ahead of an action-packed 2025 college football season. CFP future still up for grabs as Big Ten pushes auto-bid format The conferences are currently at an impasse as the Big Ten is adamant in its support for a playoff format that no one else likes. The conference is advocating for a 16-team playoff that guarantees four bids each to the Big Ten and SEC, while the ACC and Big 12 each get two bids. The remaining four spots would be reserved for the top Group of Five champion and three at-large teams. Read more on future playoff formats right here. Coaches under the most pressure this season The 2025 season could be a referendum on many coaches. As there wasn't much coaching turnover in the power conferences after the 2024 season, numerous coaches enter this season needing their teams to have strong performances. Tiger Woods' son Charlie finishes top 10 at Junior PGA Championship in West Lafayette
WEST LAFAYETTE — Charlie Woods entered the Junior PGA Championship and started slow, just cracking the top 50 on Tuesday at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette. Woods would prove to doubters, if there were any, that he could hold his own on the big stage just over a week after being cut in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Dallas. While the final result wasn't what Woods had desired on Friday, it still sends a message that golf's famous teenager could play the sport at an elite level. Woods finished the Junior PGA Championship 9-under-par and tied for ninth after shooting a 74 on Friday afternoon. More coverage: Purdue commit Sam Carraher embraces attention with Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods His top nine finish gives him an automatic invite to next year's Junior PGA Tournament at Fields Range in Frisco, Texas. Woods also has a chance to be a captain's pick for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team which will be announced Tuesday. While Woods wasn't made available for media post match on Friday, there were plenty of compliments shared in his direction about his game by 2025 Junior PGA Championship winner Lunden Esterline. 'Putter finally woke up': Charlie Woods gets hot in Round 2 of Junior PGA Championships "I had fun playing with him and Pennson (Badgett)," Esterline said. "They were both good guys." Three bogies and a double bogey on 15 ultimately hampered the 16-year-old from Jupiter, Florida. His putting didn't carry the same sharpness on the greens at Ackerman-Allen Course where he'd birdied nine times the day before. Woods faced an uphill battle entering Friday tied at -12 against Esterline who was -19. Winning the Junior PGA Championship was feasible for Woods but he needed to replicate his performance from Thursday to catch Esterline. More news: Purdue commit Sam Carraher embraces attention with Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods Woods went bogey free his first eight holes but managed just one birdie before his struggles on 14 and 15. Even with his late round troubles, Woods proved he is a top tier amateur golfer.
