Punjab: PSWC takes swift action after shocking assault on elderly woman
The video, which quickly went viral, prompted the Commission to step in.
The incident, which occurred in Raipur Gujran village, shows a man Gurjeet Singh and an unnamed woman—brutally beating a senior citizen. The footage sparked outrage across social media platforms, leading to widespread calls for justice.
Acting under Section 12 of the PSWC Act, 2001, Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill took suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued firm instructions to the local administration. She directed that an immediate investigation by a senior officer be launched, and that a detailed report be submitted to the Commission no later than Thursday, June 19.
"The Commission is deeply concerned by the inhuman treatment meted out to the elderly woman,"
said Chairperson Raj Lali Gill in an official statement. "We will ensure strict action is taken. There is
zero tolerance for violence against women, especially the elderly, who deserve our utmost respect
and protection."
The video was originally posted by a user named Rajvinder Singh, who identified the accused as Gurjeet Singh from the same village. In the video, the elderly woman is seen being pinned to the ground and mercilessly beaten by the duo, with no intervention from bystanders.
The graphic nature of the footage shocked viewers and immediately drew the attention of state authorities.
The Commission's intervention has now placed the spotlight on the local administration and police, who have been tasked with conducting a time-bound and impartial investigation.

Vigilance raids Majithia's office again; Amritsar property also under scanner
Chandigarh, July 15 (UNI) In a fresh crackdown under Punjab's anti-corruption campaign, the Vigilance Bureau today conducted another raid at the Majitha-based office of senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The team carried out a detailed measurement of the entire office building. Simultaneously, vigilance teams also inspected a property linked to Majithia and his family at Green Avenue in Amritsar. Both raids are reportedly part of an ongoing probe into assets allegedly linked to the former minister, who is currently in judicial custody at Nabha jail till July 19. Sources confirmed that the exercise focused on verifying property records and ownership details, believed to be associated with Majithia's family. During the nearly three-hour-long search operation, officials also recovered a mobile phone and a DVR from the premises, but no incriminating material was reportedly found. Advocate Amanveer Singh, representing Majithia, confirmed that the raid was related to an ongoing investigation into a previously registered case against his client. He added that a bail application has already been filed in the Mohali court, with the hearing expected in the coming days. 'The vigilance team was here since 11 am and completed measurement and verification of both movable and immovable assets. No seizure or suspicious item was recovered,' Singh clarified, stating the agency was simply completing procedural aspects of the investigation. The vigilance actions mark continued scrutiny of high-profile political figures in Punjab amid the state government's aggressive push against alleged corruption and disproportionate assets.

Nine suspected insurgents arrested across Manipur
Imphal, July 15 (UNI) Security forces and Manipur Police carried out a series of coordinated operations across Manipur yesterday leading to the arrest of nine individuals allegedly linked to various proscribed insurgent groups. The operations took place in Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Imphal West districts, resulting in the seizure of arms, mobile phones, identification documents, and cash, police today said. In Bishnupur district, an active member of an outlawed outfit was arrested from his residence. A former member of another proscribed group, he reportedly joined current group in April 2024. Also in Bishnupur, police arrested one individual in connection with an earlier arms and ammunition recovery from his residence on July 3. The arrest was made as part of the ongoing investigation. In Thoubal district, a suspected cadre of a banned group was apprehended from Leirongthel Pitra. He is believed to have been involved in extortion and recruitment activities. In Imphal West, two individuals linked to extortion activities were arrested from Thangal Bazar. In a separate operation in Imphal West, one person was arrested during frisking and checking at Singjamei Chingamakha. A 7.65mm pistol with three live rounds and a silver Grand i20 vehicle were recovered from him. Two active cadres of a banned group were apprehended from their residences in Bishnupur district. 114-yr-old athlete Fauja Singh dies in road accident in Jalandhar
Jalandhar, July 14 (UNI) Well known marathon runner, Fauja Singh, died in a fatal road accident after being struck by an unidentified vehicle here today. The tragedy occurred at Fauja's home village of Beas Pind near Jalandhar in the afternoon. He was aged 114. As per reports, Singh was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road at around 3:30 pm. He later succumbed to injuries while being treated at a private hospital. 'Turbaned Tornado' as he was affectionately called is said to have been born on April one, 1911, in Jalandhar. Fauja gained global repute for having started running in marathons at the age of 89. He set the record of being the oldest person to complete a full marathon, when he fnished the 2011 Toronto Waterfront Marathon at the age of 100.
