3 dead, 7 injured as passenger bus targeted in Balochistan

World Kalat, July 16 (UNI) At least three people were killed and seven others sustained injuries after unidentified assailants opened gunfire on a passenger coach travelling from Karachi to Quetta near a checkpost in Balochistan's Kalat, police said on Wednesday. This is the second such attack in less than a week in the restive province, which has witnessed a deadly year with scores of fatalities due to terrorist attacks, Geo news reported. The attack occurred when the bus approached Nemargh Cross near Kalat district. The assailants, who were waiting on top of nearby mountains, first opened fire and then hurled hand grenades at the vehicle, as per reports. The vehicles that run on this route carry approximately 40 to 50 passengers. However, the exact number of passengers on board the targeted bus remains unknown. Balochistan government spokesperson, Shahid Rind noted that security agencies, district authorities, and rescue teams reached the scene immediately. The wounded were transferred to the Qalat DHQ Hospital, where an emergency has been declared. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to pursue the assailants, Rind said, adding that the attackers are still at large. "Initial reports suggest that the attackers were waiting to strike. They closed the street from both sides," he added. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the terrorist incident, which he said was carried out by the Fitna al Hindustan — a term used for terrorist organisations in Balochistan. The PM also directed authorities to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. SC asks SIT to focus only on Mahmudabad's ‘Op Sindoor' posts; bars further summons

New Delhi, July 16 (UNI) The Supreme Court today questioned the Haryana Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) for allegedly misdirecting itself in the probe against Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad over his two social media posts on 'Operation Sindoor'. A bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi observed that the SIT was formed specifically to investigate the contents of the two posts and asked why it was expanding the scope of inquiry. The observation came after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mahmudabad, submitted that the SIT had seized his devices and was asking about his foreign trips over the last ten years, despite the court's May 28 order limiting the probe to the posts. 'We just want to know from SIT for what purpose they have seized devices. We will call them (officers),' Justice Kant said, adding, 'we are asking why SIT is, on the face of it, misdirecting itself. They were supposed to examine contents of the posts.' ASG SV Raju, appearing for Haryana, submitted that the manner of investigation was the prerogative of the investigating officer and all incriminating aspects had to be examined. Sibal countered that there could not be a 'roving inquiry' and added that Mahmudabad had already been summoned four times. Taking note of the SIT's interim report acknowledging the seizure of devices and their forensic examination, the court recorded that Mahmudabad had cooperated with the investigation and surrendered his devices. Directing that he should not be summoned again, Justice Kant remarked, 'You don't require him, you require a dictionary.' The bench dictated its order stating, 'Though it may not be expedient or desirable for us to comment on the manner in which SIT has proceeded, we deem it necessary to remind it of the mandate contained in our order dated May 28 and consequently direct the SIT to conclude its investigation with reference to the contents of the two social media posts as early as possible but not later than four weeks.' The court also clarified that Mahmudabad, while restrained from commenting on sub judice issues, was free to write or express opinions on other topics. On May 21, the court had granted interim bail to Mahmudabad and directed the Haryana DGP to constitute an SIT comprising senior IPS officers not belonging to Haryana or Delhi to examine his two posts. It had clarified that the SIT probe would remain confined to these two FIRs and could not be expanded. During the hearing today, the court also asked the Haryana government about its response to the National Human Rights Commission taking cognizance of the registration of FIRs in the case. 'You tell us about that also,' Justice Kant told the Haryana AAG. Mahmudabad was arrested on May 18 over his posts on 'Operation Sindoor' and remained in custody until May 21. He faces charges under Section 196, 152, and other provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to acts prejudicial to communal harmony, making assertions likely to cause disharmony, acts endangering national sovereignty, and words or gestures intended to insult a woman's modesty. Lok Seva Bhawan gherao over girl's death turns violent; several leaders injured

Bhubaneswar, July 16 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) protest march to gherao the Lok Seva Bhawan over the death of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student Soumyashree Bisi turned violent near Lower PMG Square today, leaving several party leaders and workers injured. The agitation, organized to demand a judicial probe into the incident and the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryavanshi Suraj, saw heated confrontations between BJD workers and the police. The Protesters held the government responsible for the alleged suicide of Soumyashree, a second-year student, who succumbed to burn injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on the night of July 15 following a self immolation attempt on July 12. The police were forced to resort to the use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse hundreds of agitated party workers who broke through barricades and clashed with security personnel while attempting to march towards the state secretariat. Soumyashree had reportedly attempted self-immolation on the college campus on July 12, sustaining 90 percent burn injuries alleging mental and sexual harassment by Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahoo who was suspended and subsequently arrested. The protest march, which included members of the BJD's student, youth, and women wings, began from Master Canteen Square. Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters blamed the BJP-led state government for the tragedy and reiterated their demand for a judicial probe led by a sitting judge. Tensions escalated when demonstrators broke through the first police barricade and attempted to breach a second near Lower PMG Square. Clashes erupted, turning the area into a battleground. Despite repeated warnings, the agitators refused to retreat, prompting a stronger police response. Former BJD MLAs Pranab Prakash Das and Pritiranjan Ghadei were among those injured in the violence. Several women leaders of the party also sustained injuries during the clash. Police later detained hundreds of BJD leaders and workers who staged a sit-in, refusing to vacate the area. Simultaneously, the BJD observed an eight-hour bandh in Balasore district from 6 am to 2 pm, pressing for a judicial inquiry. The bandh disrupted normal life- shops, offices, and educational institutions remained shut, and vehicular movement was severely affected. BJD activists also staged 'rail roko' protests at Soro and Balasore railway stations, disrupting train services. The Odisha government has already ordered a Crime Branch investigation into the incident and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased student. Both FM College Principal Dillip Ghosh and Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahoo have been suspended and arrested in connection with the case. In addition, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee headed by Professor Raj Mithal, with members Sushama Yadav, Nirja Gupta, and Asima Mangala. The panel has been directed to submit its report within a week. Meanwhile, the Congress and seven other Opposition parties- including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and various Left parties- have jointly called for a statewide Odisha Bandh on July 17. They are also demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and the Higher Education Minister, and a judicial inquiry led by a sitting judge. BJD President Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the police's "brutal and inhuman attack" on the party leaders and workers during the Lokseva Bhawan Ghearo agitation. Patnaik described such police brutality on peaceful protesters as barbaric. He said in this incident, many BJD workers and common people were injured. He expressed grief over the news of injuries in the attack. The BJD supremo spoke to MP Sulata Deo, former minister Pranab Prakash Das, and Prithi Ranjan Ghadei, who were injured in the police attack, over the phone, inquired about their health and wished them a speedy recovery.
