During the meeting, the delegation of journalists invited Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon to attend the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). The three-day celebrations will be held at the historic Khaliq Dina Hall in Karachi.
The delegation also informed the minister that the three-day meeting of the PFUJ Federal Executive Council will take place in Karachi from August 1 to August 3. A special session is scheduled for August 2 at Khaliq Dina Hall, the site where PFUJ was founded 75 years ago.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon assured the union representatives of his government's full commitment and support.
On the occasion, he remarked that journalism and democracy are inseparable, and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh government has always taken significant steps to promote press freedom.
He added that the Sindh government is making every possible effort to address the issues faced by journalists. 'The sacrifices of the journalist community for the cause of democracy are historic and unforgettable. The welfare of journalists remains a top priority for the Sindh government,' he said.
On the occasion, Sharjeel Inam Memon also briefed the delegation on ongoing projects in the health, transport, energy, and housing sectors. He said that the benefits of the Sindh government's initiatives in these areas are reaching the people.
During the meeting, the delegation of journalists appreciated the Sindh government's development projects, noting that the measures taken by the government are providing relief to the people.

Work on Yellow BRT project: Sharjeel terms progress ‘satisfactory'
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the progress on the Yellow Line BRT project is satisfactory, with work advancing swiftly on two key components, the construction of depots and the new structure replacing the former Jam Sadiq Bridge. He emphasised that the government's objective is to complete the project ahead of schedule to provide the citizens of Karachi with access to modern and high-quality public transport services. Talking to media after reviewed the construction work of the Yellow Line BRT at the Jam Sadiq Bridge, he said that the Sindh government's priority is to integrate all BRT lines in the megacity, including the Green Line, Orange Line, Red Line, and Yellow Line, which will significantly ease traffic congestion. He added that electric buses (EV buses) are being introduced under the Yellow Line and other BRTs. In response to a question about the Red Line BRT, he acknowledged that there had indeed been some challenges; however, the pace of construction has now picked up again, and the progress is satisfactory. He said that the Sindh government is set to launch double-decker buses and Pakistan's first electric taxi service (EV Taxi) in Karachi in August. Additionally, Pink EV scooters will be provided free of cost, especially for women, to ensure safe and convenient transportation. He said that all these initiatives are part of the Sindh government's broader vision to reduce environmental pollution in Karachi and to provide a modern and efficient transport infrastructure. Memon said that water has been drained from most areas of Hyderabad following the recent rains, but some issues were encountered due to the power suspensions caused by HESCO. The administration used generators to drain water from the affected areas. To a question, he said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should be allowed to function in accordance with its mandate, but Ali Amin Gandapur appears to be acting more like a member of the opposition. Regarding the MQM, he said that they should abandon the politics of hatred and instead focuses on addressing public issues. Regarding the children of the PTI founder, he said that if they wish to come to Pakistan and take part in politics, they should be allowed to do so; however, the politics of chaos will never be tolerated. Regarding the building collapse in Lyari, he stated that the building was constructed illegally without any approved plan. IFJ urges immediate review of PECA by SC
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called on the Supreme Court to urgently review the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), citing what it says are escalating threats to press freedom and the safety of journalists in the country. In a letter to the chief justice of Pakistan, the IFJ says that media professionals in Pakistan are facing mounting dangers while performing their professional duties. It points out that journalists are being subjected to legal cases, harassment, and threats under the PECA law. The IFJ also sent copies of the letter to the prime minister, the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), and the president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). It reminds that Pakistan's is a signatory to international conventions, which obligate it to protect fundamental rights. The IFJ letter has noted that recent amendments to PECA have granted the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) powers to act without a formal complaint - a move, it warns, could be used to silence dissent and target journalists arbitrarily. "These powers pose a serious risk of suppressing independent journalism and freedom of expression," the letter said, urging the top judge to direct the government to amend the law in consultation with PFUJ and other relevant stakeholders. The IFJ expressed concern over the bypassing of high courts through direct appeals to the apex court, calling it a "circumvention of judicial process." The IFJ highlighted the reported killing of at least seven journalists in Pakistan over the past year, while no perpetrators are convicted in cases involving attacks or threats. It cites the latest Press Freedom Report, which has documented 34 violations, including physical assaults, harassment, online hate campaigns, and intimidation.
