Lando Norris takes pole at Austrian GP, ending Verstappen's streak
LANDO Norris secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix with a sensational final lap, breaking Max Verstappen's stronghold on qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. The McLaren driver clocked 1:03.971, outpacing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.521 seconds, while teammate Oscar Piastri finished third.
Norris, trailing Piastri by 22 points in the championship, bounced back impressively after their collision in Canada. 'It was a good lap,' Norris said. 'I knew where to find time and executed it perfectly.'
Verstappen, who had taken pole in the last five Austrian GPs, struggled with car balance and finished seventh after a yellow flag disrupted his final attempt. 'The car didn't feel good in any corner,' Verstappen admitted. 'McLaren is on another level.'
Leclerc, starting on the front row, credited Ferrari's upgrades. 'The team kept pushing, and the new parts helped. We're stronger in races, so we'll challenge McLaren tomorrow.'
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth, ahead of George Russell, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly spun, affecting Piastri and Verstappen's laps.

SPIELBERG, Austria: Red Bull team boss Christian Horner on Saturday dismissed as "noise" talk of Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes, perhaps even next year, and suggested the four-time world champion was irritated by it. Mercedes have George Russell out of contract at the end of the year, and both the British driver and team principal Toto Wolff have referenced the possibility of Verstappen becoming available at some point. "It's a lot of noise. I think Max gets quite annoyed by it and we are very clear with the contract that we have with Max until 2028," Horner told Sky Sports television after Austrian Grand Prix qualifying. "Anything is entirely speculative that is being said but we tend not to pay too much attention to it. "I can imagine that George is frustrated, he hasn't been given a contract yet. But that's between him and his team. The situation with Max, we know clearly where we're at, as does Max," he added. "Everything is subject to noise and within any contract it remains confidential between the parties." Verstappen is known to have a release clause in his contract that would allow him to leave if certain performance targets are not met. The Dutch driver is third overall in the championship, 43 points behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri, but qualified only seventh on Saturday for his team's home race at the Red Bull Ring, with McLaren's Lando Norris on pole. Verstappen recognised he would not have been able to take pole position even without the yellow flags that forced him to abort his final effort. "FP3 (final practice) wasn't too bad but somehow in qualifying it just completely disappeared; there wasn't a single corner where I felt happy with the car," said the champion. "That is of course a big problem with qualifying. "Hopefully tomorrow we can at least be competitive with Ferrari or Mercedes. I don't know because with the balance that I had in quali, for sure that is not going to look great for tomorrow."

Austrian GP follows Miami in extending F1 contract to 2041
SPIELBERG: The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring will stay on the calendar through 2041 after announcing today a contract extension that equals Miami as the longest in Formula One. The current deal, last extended two years ago, ran to 2030. The circuit in Spielberg is owned by the Austrian energy drinks company that owns Red Bull Racing, and has Dutch four times world champion Max Verstappen as their star driver, and Italy-based Racing Bulls. Miami agreed a 10-year extension to 2041 last month. Behind them, Bahrain has a deal to 2036, Melbourne to 2035, Saudi Arabia and Qatar to at least 2032. "Austria has long been an incredibly special race for Formula One so it's fantastic we have secured the long-term future of a Grand Prix so deeply rooted in the sport's history," said Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali. Verstappen has won a record five times in Spielberg, a 4.3km circuit known for its picturesque backdrop and undulating layout. The late Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, whose son Mark is now at the helm, invested heavily in renovating the circuit.
