People Who Drink This Popular Beverage Have 2x the Risk of Diabetes, Study Finds
There's something about a crisp soda on a hot summer day. If you're on a weight loss journey or trying to cut out sugar, it can be tempting to turn to diet drinks to curb your craving. It makes sense, especially given that high amounts of daily sugar have been linked to weight gain, low energy, and possibly a higher risk of cancer.
But as it turns out, diet sodas may not be the better option we originally thought. In fact, they may raise your risk of diabetes in a similar way to regular soda, according to a new study.
In the study, researchers looked at the data of more than 4,654 adults from the 30-year-long Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. The participants' diets were assessed at the beginning of the study and then again at the seven and 20-year mark.The researchers looked at several factors, but mostly the average intake of diet beverages, and artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose. The researchers then broke the participants up based on the amount of substances they ingested.
They then looked at the participants' risk of diabetes. In this case, they defined diabetes as having a fasting glucose level higher than 126 mg/dL, glucose of 200 mg/dL or higher after a glucose tolerance test, an A1C above 6.5 percent, or the use of diabetes medications at follow-up visits.
Researchers found that individuals who consumed the most diet beverages had a 129 percent higher risk of diabetes compared to those who drank the least.
"Higher intakes of diet beverages and saccharin were associated with an increased risk of incident diabetes," the study authors said. "These findings highlight the need to evaluate the long-term metabolic effects of [artificial sweeteners] on glucose metabolism."

Denver students get hands-on with Solar power in Summer Renewable Energy Academy
This summer, a group of Denver Public Schools students traded beach towels for tool belts to dive into the future of energy. The DPS Summer Renewable Energy Academy, now in its fourth year, gave high schoolers a unique opportunity to explore careers in clean energy -- and get their hands dirty while doing it. The four-week academy is more than just classroom learning. Partnering with GRID Alternatives Colorado, students worked side-by-side with solar experts to install mock solar panels, learn the fundamentals of electricity, and gain real-world experience in solar energy systems. From drills to hammers, every tool used was a step closer to understanding how renewable energy works -- and how students might one day build careers in the industry. Ricardo Quinonez, a 10th grader at East High School, said he needed something to do this summer. "I was interested in electricity and energy," he said. "Now I'm learning more about solar panels and stuff like that. It's beautiful -- I love it." For students like Quinonez, it's more than just a program -- it's a spark. "I just love it," he said. "It's something new to me."

Weight loss consultant named finalist in national weight loss 'Oscars' awards
A weight loss consultant has been named a finalist in a national award scheme, known as the 'Slimming World Oscars'. Lisa Norris, who runs a Slimming World group at the Lysaght Institute in Newport, was shortlisted for Group of the Year in Slimming World's annual awards, which celebrate consultants who support members in losing weight and improving their wellbeing. Ms Norris said: "To be recognised and rewarded for doing a role that I love is so special. "Working for such an exceptional company as a franchisee, and as part of the South-Central Wales district, I couldn't be more honoured. "This recognition belongs to every person who has found the courage to walk into my group with their dream, and it is an honour to see these members grow in confidence week by week. "They are the ones who make our group the success that it is, with their friendship and support they give to each other weekly. "They make the group such a fun, safe, judgement-free place to be." Ms Norris said: "We were treated like celebrities, from the champagne reception, to the beautiful five-course evening meal with breath-taking views of the Acropolis, guided tours to the Temple of Poseidon, a hands-on cookery course, a Greek dancing lesson and sailing along the stunning coastline with an unforgettable evening of Greek food and dancing beneath the stars." The trip was Slimming World's 36th and the vision of the company's late founder, Margaret Miles Bramwell OBE, who died in February. Ms Norris said: "Margaret was always so excited to celebrate the achievements of her consultants and their members, taking part in each trip, planning and hosting every detail, so for this to be the first trip without her was an emotional one. "We did our best to keep her memory alive and remember that everything we do from here on in is to honour her and keep our promise to retain our commitment to helping as many people who need us in their weight loss journey." Slimming World is known for its supportive approach, offering encouragement not only to members but also to its consultants. Ms Norris was selected as a finalist for her "unwavering dedication" and "exceptional standards of service" in supporting both members and colleagues.
