Anwar urges UMS not to expel students in Anti-Graft rally
Zambry stated that Anwar's directive was relayed to UMS to ensure disciplinary measures do not disrupt the students' academic progress. 'The Prime Minister called me earlier, emphasising that while mistakes may have been made, their education must not be compromised,' he said.
Speaking after the 'In Person With Doc Zam' programme at UMS, Zambry highlighted Anwar's compassionate stance, noting that despite being the rally's primary target, the Prime Minister prioritised the students' future.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that participants are under investigation for nine offences, including incitement and open burning. The June 21 rally, organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, saw protesters carrying anti-corruption placards and burning an Anwar caricature.
UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor previously warned that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), including suspension or expulsion. Zambry reiterated that while freedom of assembly is constitutional, it must align with public safety laws.
The Higher Education Ministry has left the final decision to UMS, which will proceed under existing regulations.

Earlier, Mohamad Hasan paid tribute to Malaysia's excellent image, saying that the nation's good perception by outsiders had brought about numerous and frequent requests to meet with Anwar. 'The fact that we practise neutrality is also a pull factor, let's be clear that Malaysia talks to all parties,' he said. Transport Minister Anthony Loke also noted that Malaysia's profile was growing, which bodes well in pulling more tourists to the country. Heading abroad: Anwar at KLIA departing for official visits to Italy, France and Brazil from July 1 to 7. — Bernama SEPANG: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is on a series of visits to three countries, starting with Italy, followed by France and Brazil. The chartered Malaysia Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister and his delegation departed KL International Airport at 2.15pm yesterday. His three-day official trip to Italy is part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. The visits to the major economic hubs of Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro aim to strengthen Malaysia's diplomatic ties and trade relations with the respective nations, Bernama reported. The three markets collectively recorded bilateral trade valued at RM50.91bil last year. Anwar is accompanied by a business delegation comprising representatives from major Malaysian corporations and innovative enterprises, including PETRONAS, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Maybank, FGV, YTL Power, and Sunway. The Prime Minister's inaugural visit to Italy is at the invitation of his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni. Anwar arrives in Rome for a three-day official visit
ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here Tuesday (July 1) for a three-day working visit to the third-largest economy in the European Union (EU). The aircraft carrying the Prime Minister landed at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport at 8.18pm (2.18am Wednesday, July 2, Malaysia time). On hand to welcome Anwar at the airport were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Malaysia's Ambassador to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam, Italian Senior Ambassador for Protocol Affairs Fabrizio Romano and former Italian Ambassador to Malaysia Massimo Rustico. "This visit, which comes at the invitation of my counterpart, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the long-standing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Italy based on the principles and spirit of friendship, trust and mutual respect. "Malaysia sees Italy as an important strategic partner in the European continent and we are committed to expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence industry and the energy transition sector," said Anwar. He mentioned that this visit would also strengthen the relationship between the Southeast Asian region and Europe. The Prime Minister would also officiate the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on Wednesday. During the business engagement event, Anwar was set to meet the captains of Industry from 36 Italian firms. Italy is the third-largest national economy in the EU and the world's eighth-largest by gross domestic product. Anwar was also scheduled to meet leaders of the local Muslim community. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy recorded a 2% increase, reaching RM14.61bil (USD3.18 bil) compared with 2023. From January to May 2025, total trade grew by 3.3% year-on-year to RM6.5bil (USD1.48bil). Italy remains Malaysia's fifth-largest trading partner and third-largest importer of Malaysian palm oil among European Union member states in 2024.
