Student group launches campaign calling for release of detained activists

KOTA KINABALU: Student group Suara Mahasiswa UMS has launched the #SABAH3 campaign, calling for the immediate release of three activists recently detained under the Sedition Act 1948. The campaign follows the arrest of their leader Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim, member Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham, and local activist Sabir Syarifuddin. In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday (June 24), Suara Mahasiswa UMS claimed that the three were wrongly detained for their involvement in the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally. They stated that the two UMS undergraduates were arrested at the Kota Kinabalu District Police headquarters when they went to lodge a report after acid was allegedly splashed on Fadhil's car. 'We strongly reject this abuse of power and demand that the authorities release all three activists immediately. "This is why we are launching the #SABAH3 campaign, to mobilise public support,' they said in a post. They also criticised Kota Kinabalu district police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda for initially denying the arrests, calling it misleading to the media and public. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest, held over June 21–22, saw students gather peacefully to protest against corruption and unresolved water problems on campus, but escalated into controversy when some demonstrators burnt caricatures of the Prime Minister on the final day. Meanwhile, Parti Warisan legal adviser Chin Tek Ming, who was also summoned by police in connection with the rally, voiced support for the students and their cause. In a statement on Tuesday (June 24), he confirmed giving a statement to the authorities earlier but clarified that he was not present during the caricature-burning incident. While he did not condone the burning of placards, he stressed that the students felt they had no avenue left to pursue. Earlier, Anwar advised that UMS students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally should not face expulsion. According to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Anwar acknowledged the students may have made a mistake but stressed that their education and future should take priority. This follows an earlier statement by UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act 2012, which may include suspension or expulsion.

Anwar urges UMS not to expel students in Anti-Graft rally

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) not to expel students who participated in the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. Zambry stated that Anwar's directive was relayed to UMS to ensure disciplinary measures do not disrupt the students' academic progress. 'The Prime Minister called me earlier, emphasising that while mistakes may have been made, their education must not be compromised,' he said. Speaking after the 'In Person With Doc Zam' programme at UMS, Zambry highlighted Anwar's compassionate stance, noting that despite being the rally's primary target, the Prime Minister prioritised the students' future. Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that participants are under investigation for nine offences, including incitement and open burning. The June 21 rally, organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, saw protesters carrying anti-corruption placards and burning an Anwar caricature. UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor previously warned that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU), including suspension or expulsion. Zambry reiterated that while freedom of assembly is constitutional, it must align with public safety laws. The Higher Education Ministry has left the final decision to UMS, which will proceed under existing regulations.

Young Anwar Once Burned 'Subversive' Book By Tunku Abdul Rahman, Student Reminds

Subscribe to our FREE Last weekend, a group of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after they closed their 'Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0' rally in Kota Kinabalu. The likeness of Anwar accompanied by the phrase 'Madani Pelindung Rasuah Sabah' (Madani: Protector of Sabah's Corrupt) was set ablaze by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, a student activist group at the university. According to Free Malaysia Today, more than 100 took part in the rally to protest against a scandal involving the This act has prompted authorities to begin Quick history lesson: The Sedition Act 1948 is a law that criminalises speech and actions that are deemed to have a 'seditious tendency'. It was originally enacted by the British colonial government to suppress communist insurgents but it remains in force today. The definition of 'seditious tendency' is pretty broad and open to interpretation. Some Meanwhile, head of Angkatan Muda Keadilan (PKRs youth wing) Kamil Munim criticised the UMS students' actions, calling it 'barbaric' and 'excessive', Malaysia Kini Anwar took part in some political arsony himself when he was a student in the 70s Following the caricature burning incident, a UMS student activist shared a series of photos of a young Anwar burning a book written by Malaysia's first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman as a way to defend the group's actions. 'I burned Anwar's face in Sabah because I took Anwar burning Tunku Abdul Rahman's book as an example,' the caption wrote. Saya bakar muka Anwar di Sabah sebab saya contohi Anwar bakar buku Tunku Abdul Rahman. However, a handful of students from the Malay Language Society of Universiti Malaya (PBMUM) viewed the book as subversive to society. They felt that the book sent a one-sided narrative of the 13 May incident and challenged the government at the time to take accountability. However, there are those who criticised his actions for destroying historical records and impeding freedom of speech. This led the Anwar-led language committee to hold a ceremony to bury the book by burning it in public. The student who posted the photos commented on his own Tweet, with a tinge of sarcasm, 'I think Anwar Ibrahim, after watching our video, will be moved to recall his memories at the University of Malaya in the 70s. But that's just a feeling, my friend. The reality is that Anwar is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia, not a student activist'. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . UMS to lodge police report on burning of PM's caricature, denies involvement

UMS issued a statement denying involvement in the rally. KOTA KINABALU (June 23): Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will lodge a police report in connection with the recent incident of Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally participants who burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. UMS said that it was not involved either directly or indirectly with the rally or the incident, which went viral on social media recently, and the report would be made to facilitate further investigations. 'Besides being contrary to the norms of peaceful assemblies, UMS views the act as uncivilised, immature and does not reflect the intellect of the students of the institution of higher education,' it said in a statement Monday. The statement added that UMS also strongly rejects any action that risks endangering not just the participants but also the public. UMS also expressed disappointment with the group for questioning the appointment of Tun Musa Aman as the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah. On Saturday (June 21), the Suara Mahasiswa UMS group organised the Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally, including marching around Kota Kinabalu and carrying placards involving various issues in Sabah, such as corruption and water supply, in addition to burning a caricature of Anwar.
